Abstract We have discovered a new population of compact objects in the centre of the Fornax Cluster. These objects have spectra typical of old stellar systems, but are unresolved in ground- based imaging. They are all at least 10 times more luminous than any Galactic globular clusters, but fainter than any known compact dwarf galaxies. They may be a new class of intermediate object, neither globular clusters nor dwarf galaxies but something in between. We request HST imaging of a sample of these objects to measure their light profiles and determine their structure. We need the high resolution imaging of HST to measure the radii of these objects which we will combine with ground-based spectroscopy to determine their mass-to-light ratios. This will allow us to compare them to known compact objects such as globular clusters and the nuclei of dE galaxies to establish if they do indeed represent a new class of hitherto unknown stellar system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8685( 2) - 03/06/00 09:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our primary need is to measure the size of these objects, so we request STIS for the best resolution. The sesitivity needed will depend very much on the (yet to be determined) nature of the objects. In Figure 2 we therefore present two extreme possibilities: a very compact Galactic globular cluster and a dwarf galaxy with an r^1/4 profile (r_e=0.2 arcsec), both normalised to magnitudes of B=19 (V=18.4). We have not attempted to convovle these profiles with the STIS PSF, but that is also shown in the Figure for reference. The plot shows that the scaled up NGC2808 is just barely resolvable: this means that we need very good S/N to be able to model and subtract the PSF. By displacing the targets slightly from the centre of each STIS field we can also ensure that we have a star or two in the each field to help with the PSF modeling. We would need to dither between exposures to improve the spatial sampling. The dwarf galaxy profile would be easy to detect at a large radius (say 1 arcsec). In the case of a compact globular cluster we would want to measure the profile out to some reasonably faint isophote (24.5 V mag arcsec^-2) to see if it flattens (as it would if it were the nucleus of a very low SB dE) or steepens (as it would if it were tidally truncated). To measure this profile to +/-5\ radius of 0.7 arcsec (making some allowance for the PSF) in an annulus 0.15 arcsec thick, we estimate we need an exposure of 35 minutes with the clear filter (i.e. one oribit after overheads). We plan to observe each target for one orbit as outlined below. The visibility time is 54 minutes at this Declination and we are imaging with excellent coordinates (prepared for the 2dF observations) so we do not need any target acquisition time, only the guide star acquisition. There is no filter change between exposures and only a small dithering offset, so we allow 2 minute overheads for each exposure after the first.
