Abstract Our recent ground-based imaging and spectroscopic surveys have revealed the presence of extended ionized gas with LINER spectra in a large fraction (60-70%) of early- type galaxies. In order to provide clues to the nature of this gas, we propose to obtain deep STIS far-UV images of a suitable sample of 8 nearby ellipticals and E/S0s to test in detail whether the ``UV upturn'' population in early-type galaxies (AGB-manque' stars and post-AGB stars) is a viable source of ionization for the observed ionized gas in ``normal'', radio-quiet E and E/S0 galaxies. STIS is the first and only instrument able to provide data to study the radial distribution of the UV-bright population, as its influence is expected to show up only in the central few hundred parsec. The observed radial (far-UV - optical) color gradients will be compared to detailed spectrophotometric synthesis models to deduce the number of ionizing photons and their spectral energy distribution, from which we will deduce the expected emission-line spectra and H-alpha luminosities as a function of radius. We also request narrow-band WFPC2 images for 5 galaxies in our sample to derive the central radial surface brightness profile of the H-alpha+[NII] emission which can be directly compared to the model prediction. The other 3 galaxies have such WFPC2 data already available in the archive. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8686( 5) - 06/04/01 14:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain images with the STIS FUV-MAMA, using the F25QTZ filter to eliminate the strong geocoronal lines (Lyman Alpha and [OI] 1302, 1356 Angstrom). The "FUV-optical" color gradients will be derived using WFPC2 F555W/F814W images from the HST archive. The exceptions to this are NGC 4636 and NGC 6958 for which such data do not exist in the HST archive. We will obtain those data here. To obtain the central surface brightness distributions for the ionized gas, we will use narrow-band WFPC2 images to isolate the [NII]6583 emission line (using the F658N filter or the Linear Ramp Filter, depending on the redshift of the galaxy) for the galaxies for which there is no suitable data yet in the HST/WFPC2 archive. The gas distributions will be obtained by subtracting a scaled broad-band WFPC2 image (constructed from the F555W and F814W images) from the narrow-band image. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We wish to utilize the CVZ requirement for NGC 4125 (Delta = +65^degrees10'). Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The FUV imagery of this program is dark noise limited. Hence we wish to have the FUV-MAMA orbits of this program scheduled during those orbits that occur within the first 50% of orbits between SAA passages.
