Abstract def\ts def\mbhM_o We propose STIS spectroscopy of the galaxies NGC 3706 (E3) and NGC 4486A (E2) to search for supermassive black holes (BHs). NGC 3706 contains a bright, edge-on nuclear disk of stars. Therefore we can measure the BH mass \mbh\ as easily as in a galaxy with a gas disk but without uncertainty about whether the motions are affected by non-gravitational forces. NGC 4486A, like NGC 4486B, is a dwarf elliptical companion of NGC 4486 (M\ts87) with signs of an unusually massive BH. Keck spectroscopy shows that its velocity dispersion Sigma ~eq 160 km s^-1 is abnormally high for a dwarf galaxy of absolute magnitude M_B ~eq -17.5. We want to know whether it is an exception to the correlation of \mbh\ with bulge luminosity. We propose low-resolution Mg I b spectroscopy of the above galaxies and NGC 5845 to compare the stellar populations in their nuclear disks with those of their bulge components. Many ellipticals contain dust disks or stellar disks. NGC 4486A and NGC 5845 are ``Rosetta stone'' objects that contain both. They can provide direct evidence that gas disks grow stellar disks near the centers of early- type galaxies and thereby secularly increase the cuspiness of the mass distribution. The timescale of this process is unknown. It provides the best V and Sigma measurements, since it is dominated by strong and well-separated absorption lines. For the major-axis spectrum of the narrow disk in NGC 3706, we need to use the 0\sd1 slit, because it is dangerous to underfill the slit when Sigma is low. To get reasonable exposure times, we will use the 0\sd2 slit for the minor axis of NGC 3706 and for the major and minor axes of NGC 4486A. Our goal is to measure the BH mass to better than 30\ts\ the hboxM_o -- M_B correlation. From our experience with analysing STIS data on elliptical galaxies and from Monte Carlo simulations, we estimate that we need S/N ~eq 30 per resolution element. We aim to get this S/N at 0\sd2; at larger radii, we will bin along the slit. Based on the surface brightnesses given by the WFPC images (Table 1), the Ca triplet spectroscopy requires 7 orbits for NGC 3706 and 8 orbits for NGC 4486A. One additional orbit is requested for NGC 4486A because of the peakup requirements discussed in the next section. The Mg I b spectra can be obtained in 1 orbit per 0\sd2 slit position, including overhead. We propose major-axis spectra centered on the stellar disks and minor axis spectra centered on the brightest spot in the nucleus. The latter are to measure the bulge. The Mg I b spectroscopy can be done in 6 orbits. Notes: (1) We cannot observe NGC 4486A from the ground despite the excellent AO guide star because adaptive optics would not provide the necessary high Strehl ratio at 8500 Angstrom. Such observations would be analogous to pre-COSTAR spectroscopy with HST. (2) Emission- line spectroscopy of NGC 4486A would not be safe because the gas may be closely associated with the dust and the dust lane is opaque. However, we can see the stellar disk above and below the dust lane. Also, the center of the galaxy is unobscured. \vs cl Acquisition and Guiding \vs Acquisition is routine for NGC 3706 and NGC 5845. For NGC 4486A, the bright star is a complication: it is too close to the galaxy center. The smallest acquisition field is 5^ , so the telescope will grab the star. We plan to measure the offset from the star to the galaxy in the WFPC2 image and use it to offset the slit from the star to the galaxy. A normal peakup using the slit should then center the galaxy without further problems from the star. We have checked that the galaxies have adequate guide stars for the slit positions requested. The only exception is the major-axis slit position on NGC 4486A. It has only one guide star. The object can still be observed, but we will need to redo the peakup on the slit before each orbit's integration. The added overhead is 1 orbit. \vs We are grateful to Gary Bower for advice on acquisition and guiding. \vs cl Analysis \vs The spectroscopy instrumental reduction will be carried out by Kormendy. Photometric and kinematic data reduction will be done by Lauer, Bender, and Kormendy. Gebhardt will make dynamical models with the three-integral modeling code used in Gebhardt Etal (1999). Bender will compare the Mg I b spectra to stellar population models. Tremaine will lead the dynamical analysis involving relaxation and the comparison to eccentric disks models. All Co-Is will participate in further interpretation. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Ground-based spectroscopy is planned for all three objects. STIS spectra of kinematic standard stars are already available.
