Abstract The LMC distance is crucial for the calibration of the Cosmic Distance Scale. However, there is considerable disagreement about this fundamental measurement, with discrepancies among different methods of ~ 10% (m-M = 18.2 - 18.7 mag). Employing a method largely immune from zero-point uncertainties plaguing less direct methods, we recently determined an accurate distance (m-M = 18.30 +/- 0.07 mag.) to the LMC eclipsing binary (EB) HV2274. This distance was derived from ground-based light curves, HST/FOS spectrophotometry, and GHRS radial velocity data. We propose HST/STIS observations of three additional LMC EBs, carefully chosen from the large MACHO and EROS surveys, to determine more accurately the LMC distance. These detached, uncomplicated EBs, in the Bar or 30 Dor region, minimize corrections to the LMC centroid. HST/STIS low-dispersion spectrophometry (115 - 800 nm) will be used to determine T_eff and E(B-V). STIS/G140M observations yield accurate radial velocities of these double-line systems which, when combined with the light curves and temperatures, yield the stellar radii and luminosities, and distances. These data form the core of this program to determine the LMC distance, thereby firmly establishing the length of the Cosmic Meter Stick to better than 2%. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8691( 9) - 02/08/01 08:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ * Low-Dispersion Spectrophotometry: We wish to obtain complete low resolution spectral coverage, from 115 - 800 nm, of the targets (EROS 1044 already has FOS spectrophotometry spanning 115 to 480 nm obtained by us during Cycle 6). The observations will require the use of four different grating/detector combinations: G140L(STIS/FUV), G230L(STIS/NUV), G430L(STIS/CCD), G750L(STIS/CCD). As discussed by Fitpatrick & Massa (1999) this extended wavelength coverage uniquely disentangles the stellar from the interstellar parameters, yielding the quantities: T_eff, log(g), Fe/H, E(B-V), A_Lambda, necessary for the goals of the project. Using the online STIS exposure calculator, with fluxes previously obtained from our FOS observations of EROS 1044, we calculate that an exposure time of 5 - 10 min (for all four gratings/detectors) results in a S/N typically exceeding 40/1 per resolution element. Since the spectral types and brightnesses of EROS 1066 and MACHO 05:36:48.7 are nearly the same as EROS 1044 there are little differences between the expected UV count rates among the three EBs. At this S/N the spectrophotometry will have sufficient quality for the determination of the stellar parameters and reddenings. The timing of the visits is critical, since we wish to observe the binaries outside of eclipses (phase 0.2 - 0.3 or 0.7 - 0.8). The resulting spectra will be similar to that shown for EROS 1044 in Fig. 2. *Medium-Dispersion Radial Velocity Study. We intend to observe three eclipsing binary systems in the LMC: EROS 1044, EROS 1066, and MACHO 05:36:48.7, using STIS in the G140M(STIS/FUV) mode, centered at 140 nm. This setup provides sufficient spectral resolution for measuring radial velocities of the individual stars in each binary (via the cross-correlation technique) to a precision of ~3-5 km s^-1. Early B-type stars produce their most intense radiation in the UV part of the spectrum. For example, at 140 nm, the flux is 20 - 30 times greater than in the photographic region usually used for ground- based radial velocity studies. Based on our previous experience with HST/GHRS radial velocity observations of HV2274, we are requesting ten visits to each EB to derive accurate masses and to determine the size of the orbit and the radii of the stars. These eleven visits provide the phase coverage necessary to complete the radial velocity curve. During each visit, one spectrum will be obtained. The average visibility for these targets is 58 minutes per orbit. Using the online STIS Exposure Calculator, and with fluxes at 140 nm from our FOS observations of EROS 1044, we calculate an exposure time of about 50 min (typical for the on-target time per orbit) yields and S/N of 20/1 per resolution element. Since the other two targets have nearly identical brightnesses and spectral types we expect similar S/Ns. The timing of the visits is critical, since we wish to observe the binaries at specific phases outside the eclipses. Real Time Justification ----------------------- For the radial velocity study (using the G140M grating), our experience with HV2274 shows that a minimum of ten visits is necessary to derive accurate masses and to determine the size of the orbit and the radii of the stars. Orbital phases must be centered near the two quadratures of the binary orbit. Observations at these orbital phases allow a clear Doppler separation of the radial velocities of the stars of each binary (250 - 400 km s^-1, or Delta lambda_1-2 ~ 0.14 nm at Lambda = 140 nm) of the spectral features of the component stars. For the low resolution spectrophotometry we request that the observations be obtained outside eclipses. The observations should be made near the quadratures of the orbit (phases 0.2-0.3 and 0.7-0.8).
