Abstract Open clusters provide excellent hunting grounds for brown dwarf (BD) searches. The AlphaPer and Pleiades clusters are young (80--120 Myr), nearby (120--175 pc), and have low extinction. They are cosidered to be the best-suited places to study the Substellar Mass Function (SMF). A dozen of cool faint AlphaPer and Pleiades members have been confirmed as ``bona-fide'' BDs with the lithium test. By comparison with those, about 60 very good cluster BD candiates are currently known. The Pleiades SMF obtained using the most recent deep large CCD surveys indicates that BDs are quite numerous but do not make a significant contribution to the total cluster mass. One of the main uncertainties of the SMF is the effect of binary corrections. We propose a WFPC2 search for faint companions to very low-mass cluster stars and BDs. We will use any identified companions to provide empirical constraints on BD evolutionary models, to test our ideas about fragmentation in molecular clouds, and to correct the SMF. The sensitivity of WFPC2 shows that we can readily detect secondaries with masses of about 25 Jupiters orbiting at about 40 AU from our targets. Companions with masses of about 15 Jupiters can be detected at separations of 80 AU. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8701( 4) - 04/21/00 08:48 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have selected a sample of Pleiades BD candidates in the magnitude range I=17.5 to 22, corresponding to masses in the range 80 to 30 M_J. We excluded the objects that were already observed in our NICMOS program (GO 7899), with the exception of HHJ 2, CFHT-Pl-15, CFHT-Pl-19 and Calar 3 (see justification below). The targets selected for WFPC2 are the following: Four ``NPL'' objects from the deep photometric survey of Festin (1997, AA, 322, 455; 1998, AA, 333, 497). These objects fit the optical and near-IR photometric sequence of known Pleiades BDs. Festin (1998) has obtained low-resolution spectroscopy that support their BD status. Three ``CFHT'' objects that have recently been observed with Keck/LRIS and they all have spectroscopic properties (Stauffer et al. 1998) confirming that they are Pleiades members. The CFHT candidates were discovered by Bouvier et al. (1998). Eight photometric BD candidates (HHCJ numbers) recently discovered by Hambly et al. (1999, MNRAS, 303, 835). Nine ``Roque'' objects from the CCD survey of Zapatero Osorio et al. (1997). All these objects have follow-up NIR photometry and/or low-resolution optical spectroscopy consistent with cluster membership. Finally, we have selected a sample of objects in the AlphaPer open cluster (age ~90 Myr). They have masses in the range 80 to 50 M_J. Keck high- resolution spectroscopic observations show that they have spectral types and radial velocities consistent with cluster membership. Half of them have higher-resolution spectra that allow to detect lithium (Basri & Marti n 1999, ApJ, 510, 266; Stauffer et al. 1999). We will center our objects in the Planetary Camera and will use filters F814W and F785LP. The integration times will be 600 s in each filter (divided in two exposures of 300 s each). This yields a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ~ 4 for substellar objects with I=24.5. Due to the presence of the Airy pattern of the PSF of the primary star, the background will be enhanced and thus reduce the SNR. A SNR of 3 should barely allow the detection of a faint companion. If no companion is detected, we will add the frames obtained in the two filters in order to reach a more sensitive upper limit. Including the overhead for Guide Star acquisition and instrumental overhead the observations of each target will require only about 25 minutes, i.e. well suited for a snapshot program. We request guide star acquisition and fine-lock guiding in order to ensure that our targets are well centered in the PC camera, and to avoid any drifts of the telescope. Wide band filters are the necessary choice for our program because we are interested in detecting very faint companions. The use of 2 filters will provide color information than can be compared with model atmospheres in order to learn about the nature of the companions. Theoretical models provided by co- I Isabelle Baraffe predict that the F814W-F785LP color increases motonically with decreasing temperature. Thus, our observations will use the two most efficient WFPC2 filters for detecting very low mass objects. The WFPC2 fields that will be observed in parallel mode with our planetary camera primary observations will be used for searching for free-floating BDs in the open clusters. They will cover enough area that it is likely that we will find a few new low-mass BD candidates if the SMF keeps rising for masses lower than 40 M_J (a hypothesis that will be tested by the parallel observations). Moreover, because the Pleiades is very close to the plane of the ecliptic, our observations will also be useful for detecting faint Kuiper belt objects (Brown & Webster 1998, PASA, 15, 176; Luu & Jewitt 1998, ApJ, 502, L91). We favor to use WFPC2 rather than STIS imaging for this program, despite of the higher sensitivity of the latter (about a factor of 2), because of two reasons: 1) In the red wavelength region (Lambda>=750 nm) STIS suffers from scattered light which compromises the detection of close faint companions and makes difficult to obtain accurate photometry; 2) The wide field of WFPC2 is likely to yield the serendipitous discovery of BDs in the parallel observations. In the mass range of interest, young BDs are expected to range in temperature from about 2500 to 1000 K, and thus are predicted to have a large range in molecular band properties and predicted colors. For example, within this temperature range one should see the effects of both grain formation and methane formation, and perhaps the beginning of grain condensation due to gravitational settling which is an extremely complex effect to modelize. The HST/WFPC2 photometry of the secondaries detected in our program will provide a good test for model atmospheres and evolutionary tracks of contracting substellar objects. For example, for an age of 100 Myr and a mass of 25 M_J, the `NextGen' models (no grains) give the following absolute magnitudes and colors: M_ F814W=16.99, M_ F675W-M_ F814W=3.91. For the same age and mass, the `COND' models (dust grain condensation included in equation of state but not in opacity) give: M_ F814W=15.53, M_ F675W-M_ F814W=1.71; whereas the `DUST' models (grains included in EOS and in opacity) give: M_ F814W=16.91, M_ F675W-M_ F814W=2.24. Hence, the WFPC2 colors of BD binaries are very useful for testing the models because the are very sensitive to the effects of dust.
