Abstract Central cluster galaxies are the most massive stellar systems known and have been used as standard candles for many decades. Only recently have central cluster galaxies been recognised to exhibit a wide variety of small scale (<100 pc) features that can only be reliably detected with HST resolution. The most intriguing of these are dust lanes which have been detected in many central cluster galaxies. Dust is not expected to survive long in the hostile cluster environment unless shielded by the ISM of a disk galaxy or very dense clouds of cold gas. WFPC2 snapshot images of a representative subset of the central cluster galaxies from an X-ray selected cluster sample would provide important constraints on the formation and evolution of dust in cluster cores that cannot be obtained from ground-based observations. We were awarded 50 SNAPSHOTS in Cycle 8 for this program of which one has been made so far and another five are scheduled. We wish to continue this project into cycle 9 to ensure that a sample of more than 50 are observed and cover a number of recently discovered systems. This project complements our extensive multi- frequency work on this sample that includes optical spectroscopy and photometry, VLA and X-ray images for the majority of our targets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8719( 3) - 10/19/00 11:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to make the simplest possible observations taking two 300s CR-SPLIT exposures for the 15 clusters with redshift less than 0.15 and two 500s exposures for the 15 clusters at higher redshifts in the F606W filter with guidestars. This allows for reasonable cosmic ray removal and maximises the scientific return for each visit of 22 or 29 minutes. The F606W filter was chosen to maximise the counts in the galaxy whilst taking the bluest passband to increase the contrast of any dust absorption. We understand that F606W has a poorer photometric calibration than F555W but this does not outweigh the additional signal gained in our view. This filter is subject to the inclusion of HAlpha in the lower redshift objects (z<0.1) but the sheer width of the bandpass minimises its effect and, as we have spectrophotometric data for over 90\ target galaxies, any line contribution can be calculated directly. We intend, where practical, to place the dominant galaxy in the centre of WF3 to maximise the coverage of the region of any likely Einstein radius (15--40'') around the galaxy. Placing the galaxy on the PC chip wouuld give better spatial sampling but severely limit the detectability of any lensed features. The roll angle of any observation is not critical although we will flag observations where a bright star might enter the field of view. We do not propose to make two colour images as this would require multiple visits. We will apply for time separately for further observations of particular objects if the single image shows significant structure. With the imminent arrival of the ACS offering a much improved blue sensitivity, the impact of a follow-up blue snapshot campaign would be much greater. We see our Cycle 8 program and this proposal as an important step in finding the most productive targets for future HST, NGST and SIRTF observations. As outlined above, we wish to waive any proprietry rights to the data as we view this proposal as of community-wide interest.
