Abstract We propose to carry out a UV(~1, 600 Angstrom) snapshot imaging survey with STIS of all the actively star-forming galaxies detected by ISO at Lambda>170 Mum and closer than cz=9000 km/s. The sample covers a large region in the parameter's space of morphology, luminosity, metallicity, and star formation intensity. The multiwavelength (UV/far-IR) information will be exploited to address open issues on low- and high-redshift star formation and on the dust/star- formation interconnection. The ISO galaxies will be used as low-redshift benchmarks to explore the relationship between the Lyman-break galaxies at z~3 and the SCUBA sources. The conditions for the escape of UV light from a `dusty' galaxy will be investigated as a function of the sample parameters. UV-bright structures will be measured and used to quantify the fractions of nuclear and disk emission, the fraction of star formation in massive clusters and the properties of those star clusters, the structural properties of star forming bars, rings, and tidally-driven star formation in IR-bright galaxies. Given the breadth of scientific applications and the relevance of this unique dataset for upcoming instruments and missions, including mid/far-IR ones like SIRTF, we propose this project as a Service to the Community and will release immediately the UV images in the public domain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8721( 4) - 03/29/00 11:08 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ sectionUV Fluxes and Target Detectability The main concern when proposing UV observations of IR-bright objects is the dust content and, hence, the UV detectability of the targets. This is, however, not a concern for the present sample. About 1/3 of the galaxies in our list have been observed with IUE (last column of Table 1), and have typical UV surface brightnesses of 1times10^-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2 Angstrom arcsec^- 2 at 1, 600 Angstrom. With these fluxes we will achieve adequate S/N values for the typical exposure times available in SNAP observations (see section 3 below). Since the galaxies observed by IUE cover the full FIR range of the sample (column 6 of Table 1), we do not expect the other galaxies to be significantly fainter at UV wavelengths than the IUE ones. Further confidence that our targets will be detected comes from the HST program GO-8201, where STIS/FUV observations of ULIRGs are being carried out. These galaxies are intrinsically more luminous in the IR than our targets, and, thus, potentially UV-fainter. However, all targets observed so far with STIS are well detected. sectionStrategy Our preliminary search through the ISO archive has yielded 40 galaxies which obey the criteria listed in section 3 of the Scientific Justification. We will perform a second, more thorough search of the archive to identify galaxies which may have been missed the first time, and increase the size of our sample. From this enlarged pool of targets, we will select the 40 best ones according to the following criteria: 1. have the most accurate detections at FIR wavelengths, especially at Lambda>170 Mum; 2. maximize the range of luminosities, metallicities, host galaxy morphologies and star-formation intensities covered by the sample. Some of the `excluded' targets will be retained as back-ups in case that one or more galaxies in the `best' sample violate the Bright Object Limit for STIS. With a typical 70\ end up with ~30 galaxies observed in the UV, a large enough sample to address the main science goals of this project: (1) use of the ISO galaxies as low-redshift benchmarks for high-z galaxies, to study the connection between Lyman-break galaxies and SCUBA sources; (2) investigation of the physical conditions under which UV light can escape from star-forming galaxies; (3) quantification of the structural properties of IR-bright, star forming galaxies in the UV. sectionInstrument Configuration and Exposure Times We propose to use the STIS/FUV MAMA in imaging mode with the F25SRF2 filter to target the central regions of the ISO galaxies at Lambda~1, 500--1, 700 Angstrom. The filter has been chosen to have an effective wavelength as close as possible to the mean restframe wavelength of the bulk of the Lyman-break galaxies observations. At the same time, the F25SRF2 filter effectively excludes the Lyman-Alpha airglow. The F25SRF2 filter has more than twice the efficiency of the F25QTZ (the other filter available at a similar wavelength region), although it is less effective at excluding the OI airglow. The gain in efficiency is such that we expect higher S/N ratios with the F25SRF2 than with the F25QTZ even in the presence of high background, for the average UV brightness of our galaxies. For photometric accuracy and to maximally exploit the HST angular resolution, we request that the observations are conducted with Guide Stars fine locking. Accounting for 6 minutes overhead for Guide Star acquisition and 5 minutes overhead for instrument set-up (no target acquisition is needed for STIS UV imaging), we are left with about 25--30 minutes of useful exposure time in a typical 35--40 minutes SNAP observing window. For a typical UV surface brightness of 1times10^ -16 erg s^-1 cm^-2 Angstrom arcsec^-2 (Table 1), the STIS Exposure Time Calculator gives S/N=4.4 in a 0.1^prime *0.1^ bin (4 pix*4 pix), for T_exp=25-- 30 min and a flat spectrum. This is more than adequate for our project, given that the UV light tends to be clustered, and individual clusters will be observed with higher S/N values. In order to study the diffuse UV light, we will bin the UV images as needed, expecting to reach S/N~10--15 in bins of 0.25^ in side. Since STIS is a photon-counter, there is no need to CR-SPLIT the exposures. sectionBright Object Limit Considerations Generally, violating the Bright Object Limits for the MAMA detectors is not a major concern for a sample of `dusty' galaxies. However, such concern remains for the nearest and the bluest among our targets, where relatively unextincted, young stellar clusters could be present. We will use all the information available to us, such as HST, IUE, UIT or ground-based images, to assess the potential for such violation in each individual case. On average, about 10-15 contributed by the brightest stellar cluster, a result confirmed by the analysis of pre-COSTAR FOC or WFPC2 images of a sample of local, UV-bright galaxies (see, e.g., Meurer et al. 1995). This implies that only NGC1705 and NGC5236, among the galaxies with IUE spectra in Table 1, have the potential to violate the BOL for STIS (see the last column of the Table, where the IUE aperture is ~160 arcsec^2). We will perform all the necessary checks to comfirm or disclaim this conclusion. When a BOL violation is established, we will switch from the F25SRF2 to the less efficient F25QTZ, centered at a wavelength ~100 Angstrom longer than the first filter. If such solution is still insufficient to remove the problem, we will replace the target with one of the back-ups discussed in section 2. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Members of our team have access to ground-based facilities (through Steward Observatory), where we are planning to obtain supporting broad-band and HAlpha images for those galaxies in our sample which do not have such information available from the literature or from the HST archive. The HAlpha images will be combined with the STIS/UV images to derive a relative empirical calibration between the two indicators of star formation. The broad-band ground-based plus the STIS images will be used to constrain the ages of the hot stellar populations (Calzetti et al. 1997).
