Abstract This is a continuation of GO 6047/6566/7493/8282. We use HST-FGS3/1R to calibrate the mass-luminosity relation (MLR) for stars less massive than 0.2 Msun, with special emphasis on objects near the stellar/brown dwarf border. Our goals are to determine Mv values to 0.10 magnitude, masses to 5%, and more than double the number of objects with masses determined to be less than 0.20 Msun. This program uses the combination of HST-FGS3/1R at optical wavelengths and ground-based infrared speckle work to examine nearby, subarcsecond binary systems. Several of the objects included have M < 0.1 Msun, placing them at the very end of the stellar main sequence, and making them brown dwarf candidates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8774( 12) - 04/17/01 12:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Each of the eight systems will be observed in TRANS mode. Six systems (all but GL473 and GJ1215) will be observed in POS mode as well, in order to place the components in a grid of reference stars so that fractional masses can be determined. Both modes will be used in the same orbit in these cases. Filter F583W will be used in TRANS mode to determine the separation, position angle, and brightness difference between the components. TRANS mode scans will be 1-- 3" in length The F583W aperture has been selected because it is currently the best calibrated of the filters available in FGS. POS mode observations will include multiple runs through the following sequence: target, drift star check, reference stars, target, drift star check. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Because we are monitoring orbital motion for these multiple systems, observing windows have been carefully selected to provide the best orbital coverage.
