Abstract We propose to continue our long-term survey of Saturn's rings, using the unique capabilities of the WFPC2, to obtain a coherent set of high resolution, multi-color images of the Saturnian ring system over the full range of ring tilt and phase angles accessible from the Earth over the course of 1/4 Saturn year (7 Earth years). Our Cycle 6 (program 6806) and long-term Cycle 7 (7427) and Cycle 8 (8398) observations explored the rings from their nearly edge-on aspect, just after the most recent ring plane crossings, to their current moderate inclination. Here, we propose to complete our survey during the next three Saturn oppositions (Cycles 9-- 11), as the rings gradually approach their most open configuration, shortly before the arrival of the Cassini spacecraft at Saturn. Our key goals are to investigate the composition, structure, and particle properties of the rings from variations of ring brightness and color with radius, tilt and phase angle, to measure the azimuthal asymmetry of the A ring and the temporal variability of the clumpy F ring, to follow the enigmatic behavior of the renegade satellites Prometheus and Pandora, and to observe the co-orbital satellites Janus and Epimetheus as they exchange orbits in February 2002. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8802( 6) - 11/16/01 14:06 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This proposal covers the final three years of a seven year survey, during which Saturn's rings will have gone from nearly edge-on to their maximum opening angle as seen from the Earth and as illuminated by the Sun. (Our Cycle 7 proposal to observe three Saturn oppositions was approved for Cycles 7--9, but because Cycle 8 was delayed by a year, two of the oppositions occurred in Cycle 7 and the third is taking place in Cycle 8. In our earlier programs, we were awarded four visits per opposition, and we have planned our observations for Cycle 9--11 assuming a total of 12 visits.) During each of the next three Saturn oppositions, we propose to observe the rings on 2--6 separate HST orbits, in order to provide a range of phase and ring tilt angles, as well as a time baseline over which to detect variations in ring structure (particularly the F ring) and to measure satellite positions. Whenever possible, the observations will be timed so that the small satellites Janus, Epimetheus, Pandora, and Prometheus are unobscured by Saturn. (1) `Zero' phase observations. During each year of observations, we request one HST orbit when Saturn is at its minimum phase angle. We will use the PC to image separately each ansa in a standard set of UBVRI filters (F336W, F439W, F555W, F675W, and F814W). The exposures are quite short, and based on our experience in Cycles 6, 7, and 8, there is adequate time in an orbit to move from one ansa to the other and to run through the entire filter sequence for a total of 15 images per orbit, including multiple images at F439W and F555W to give maximum SNR of the small satellites. (2) `Intermediate' phase observations. In order to characterize the opposition surge, we plan to observe the rings at additional intermediate phase angles during Cycles 9 and 11, using the standard UBVRI filters for one ansa but adding the F255W, F785LP and F1042M filters for the other ansa to help determine ring composition. To improve the SNR and geometric registration of our ring color studies, we will select two visits in which we will target just one ring ansa. This will enable us to observe the same ring region with two exposures for each of the UBVRI, F785LP and F1042M filters. Exposure times are on the order of 10 seconds or less for most of the UBVRI set and F785LP, 300 sec for F255W, and 40 seconds for the F1024M filter. (3) `High' phase observations. Additionally, we request one HST orbit each year when Saturn is at its maximum phase angle, either before or after opposition. The exposure sequence will be similar to the zero phase case. (4) Public outreach. At least once during each opposition, we will ensure that our observations are taken during a single HST orbit, so that we can combine the East and West PC images into a true-color mosaic of the planet and its rings with minimal planetary rotation between frames. The Hubble Heritage Project has produced the first such photomosaic from our data, taken when the rings were nearly edge-on, and we intend to produce similar true-color planet images for each opposition as the rings eventually reach their most open extent. Our intention is to make the final montage of seven separate images available as part of the STScI web page. noindent Cycle 9: We will sample the opposition surge at four phase angles, as we have done for noindent most of the previous four Saturn oppositions (Cycles 6--8). During one of the intermediate phase visits, we will target only the West ansa, as described above. noindent Cycle 10: During this cycle, we will continue our observations of the small satellites, especially Prometheus and Pandora, whose orbits have known mean motion variations on time scales of 100 days or so. We will time our high phase angle observation to catch the two small co- orbital satellites Janus and Epimetheus as they exchange orbits in February 2002. Also, we will search for and determine the color of clumps in the F ring over a large range of ring longitude at a time when the rings are quite open. Since the ring opening angle is varying relatively slowly at this point, we will use only two visits during Cycle 10 in order to reserve six full visits for the final opposition. noindent Cycle 11: During this opposition, the rings will have reached their maximum opening, and as an additional bonus, the minimum phase angle at opposition is only alpha_ min=0.15^degrees, half the value reached during any of our previous observations. This gives us the best chance to explore the very steep rise in ring brightness near opposition, and we will use six visits to sample the phase curve as completely as possible. begintabularlll Cycle 9 & Primary Orbits: 4 & Exposures: 60, Cycle 10 & Primary Orbits: 2 & Exposures: 30, Cycle 11 & Primary Orbits: 6 & Exposures: 90 endtabular Real Time Justification ----------------------- For most of the cycles of this long-term program, we have specified that observations must take place when Saturn is within several relatively narrow ranges of solar phase angle, and when as many as possible of the small inner moons of Saturn are unobscured by the disk of the planet. DURING CYCLE 10 ONLY, we are relaxing these geometrical considerations quite a bit, but in CYCLE 11 we will again be specifying quite stringent geometric contraints on the observations. The primary geometric constraint is that Pandora and Prometheus, two small satellites of Saturn, be in the WFPC2/PC field of view during each visit. Because the rings are quite open as seen from the Earth, we do not need to worry as much as previously about the satellites being blocked by the planet, so the scheduling should not be difficult to arrange from this point of view. We have three visits during Cycle 10: . Visit 1 - this must be as nearly continguous as possible to Dale Cruikshank's STIS program "Composition of Saturn's Rings, and its variation with location" since we want to be able to cross-calibrate the STIS and WFPC2 images when the rings and planet are under the same viewing geometry. This needs to be timed to avoid the next HST Servicing Mission, and it must occur near opposition so that ORIENT can put the STIS sli along the direction of the rings. . Visit 2 - this will take place at a phase angle of about 6 degrees, prior to opposition, timed for optimal mass determination of Mimas from its effect on Pandora. . Visit 3 - this will take place when Janus and Epimetheus are in the midst of exchanging their places in their coorbital configuration. Our first choice of times is a very narrow window of quite favorable geometry. If this can not be scheduled, we have specified wider alternative windows. . We have adopted a uniform numbering scheme for the exposures, as follows: Exposure #njk, where i=primary visit index with the following one-word label 1: STIS-COLLABORATION contiguous with Dale Cruikshank's Cycle 10 obs. 2: MIDPHASE phase angle near 0.5 degree 3: COORBITAL Janus/Epimetheus orbit exchange n=index specifying legal combinations of pointings to catch Prometheus/Pandora n j's Pandora Prometheus-- --- ------- ---------- 0 4, 5 W W Special case for Janus/Epimethus 1 1, 8 E E 2 4, 5 W W 3 2, 7 E W 4 3, 6 W E 5 4, 8 one or both are hidden (least desirable NOTE: visit NUMBER is given by (in), such as 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 - all of these are a group and will refer to each other in the HOLD comment These are in PRIORITY ORDER - we want to have both satellites on same ansa so that extra images can be taken during this part of visit to get as many satellite measurements as possible j=target index (exposures with the same pointing) 1: East ansa, Pandora and Prometheus 2: East ansa, Pandora 3: East ansa, Prometheus 4: East ansa 5: West ansa, Pandora and Prometheus 6: West ansa, Pandora 7: West ansa, Prometheus 8: West ansa k=filter index: 1 F336W U 2 F439W B 3 F555W V 4 F675W R 5 F814W I 6 F785LP for study of ring composition (=COMP#1) 7 F1042M for study of ring composition (=COMP#2) 8 FQCH4P15 (8922A) for suppression of Saturn shine (=CH4) 9 F255W for spokes in the UV Visits 11-15: Observations done contiguously with STIS observations.------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- Possible dates: BETWEEN 1-DEC-2001:13:00:00 AND 5-DEC- 2001:13:00:00 Rationale: Observations need to be done with same viewing geometry and illumination angle as STIS observations in Dale Cruikshank's companion proposal 9112 to observe spectra of Saturn's rings. We assume that the UBVRI filters have been extensively calibrated, and that the F255W, F785LP and F1042M filters are sufficiently well understood not to require additional calibration. If major satellites are in the field, they can be used as local calibrators. The inclination of the rings to the line of sight is sufficiently large (and the exposures sufficiently short) that we do not expect scattered light from the satellites to contaminate our view of the rings (unlike the situation during ring plane crossing).
