Abstract We propose to use STIS to take diagnostic spectra of a newly-developing hot spots in the equatorial ring surrounding SN 1987A. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8806( 5) - 04/03/00 09:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe the newly-discovered hot spots with STIS with the G750M/6581 grating and the 52X2 slit. We will perform an on-board acquisition of the offset star S2 (of Walker & Suntzeff 1990), then an offset to center the SN and hot spots within the aperture. A short F28X50LP image will be taken for use as a spatial intensity map, to record the telescope pointing, and to search for the appearance of new hot spots. Because of the spatial positions and expected moderate velocity redshifts and blueshifts of the hot spots, position angle 70 < PA < 110 is needed. The 180 degree reverse orientation is *NOT* usable; this would shift the spot emission outwards onto the surrounding ring emission, rather than inwards to the clear interior of the ring. A PA of 86.51 degrees E of N is most desirable: This most clearly resolves the the hot spot spectra, prevents overlap of [N II] 6548 & H-alpha and the [SII] doublet from opposite sides of the ring, and replicates the pointing of GO 7123 spectrum O3XL07010 which will be used to search for the faintest appearance of new spots. We request a scheduling of this orbit such that a PA as close to 86.51 as possible [ i.e. ORIENT = 131.55 for the 52X2 aperture] can be used. SN 1987A companion stars: Star 2 (B1 III, V=15.0, U=14.2, 2.91" from SN at PA = -42d) and Star 3 (B1e, V~15.8, U~15.0, 1.63" from SN at PA = 118d) are bright and nearby. Depending on PA of observation these may fall in the 52X2 slit, but their continuum will not cross the ring or any structure of interest. 200 LMC-SN1987A- EXT-STAR, B3-B5 V-IV RA=5H 35M 30.58S +/- 0.05S, DEC= J2000.0 V = 16.07 OFFSET -69D 16' 18.32" +/- 0.1", PLATE- B = 15.92 ID=06B0 U = 15.03 R = 16.12 E(B-V) = 0.17+/-0.02 Comments: Offset star for data acquisition, star S2 from Walker & Suntzeff (1990), position from PLATE-ID=06B0 8806( 5) - 04/03/00 09:38 - [ 4] Patterns ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pattern_Number: 01 Primary_Pattern Secondary_Pattern Pattern_Type STIS-ALONG-SLIT Pattern_Purpose DITHER Number_Of_Points 3 Point_Spacing 0.5 Coordinate_Frame POS-TARG Pattern_Orient 90 Center_Pattern NO ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8806( 5) - 04/03/00 09:38 - [ 5] Visit: 01 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: ORIENT 131.55D TO 131.55D SCHED 100% BEFORE 01-Jun-2000 On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Visit 01 consists of 6 exposures: acquisition of the offset star (1 x 1 sec), an F28X50LP image to use as a spatial map (1 x 60s, 1 x 120s) and a 52X2 G750M 6581 spectrum (3 x 500s). Because of the spatial positions and expected moderate velocity redshifts and blueshifts of the hot spots, position angle 70 < PA < 110 is required. The 180 degree reverse orientation is *NOT* usable. A PA as close to 86.51 degrees E of N [ i.e. ORIENT = 131.55 for the STIS 52X2 aperture ] is most desirable, and has been requested via the ORIENT special requirement. If this particular PA is not schedulable, we request opening the allowed range to 125 < ORIENT < 135, then to 120 < ORIENT < 140, then to 115 < ORIENT < 145, et cetera, until the orbit can be scheduled. The ORIENT cannot exceed ORIENT 155, however. Past STIS spectra (GO 7123, 7587, 8243) have avoided the use of the following guide stars; we also request their exclusion. 9162.0247 5:35:55.781 - 69:09:52.63 8.9 2 3 1 448.96 05ZW 9163.0606 5:37:26.026 -69:21:42.41 12.77 3 1 675.31 05ZW 9163.0775 5:37:44.940 -69:20:05.68 11.91 3 1 738.05 05ZW 9163.0933 5:37:36.307 -69:06:44.42 12.84 0 1 913.91 05ZW 9163.0948 5:37:38.971 -69:10:15.46 11.56 3 1 798.03 05ZW 9163.0976 5:37:46.306 - 69:20:50.42 10.95 3 1 757.05 05ZW 9163.0979 5:37:47.071 -69:09:11.09 10.30 3 1 869.06 05ZW 9166.0229 5:35:26.179 -69:28:02.93 11.36 3 1 663.23 05ZW 9166.0750 5:34:45.540 -69:23:24.68 12.98 3 1 450.65 05ZW 9166.0800 5:34:28.980 -69:25:40.04 12.78 3 1 611.46 05ZW 9167.0336 5:37:02.275 - 69:22:51.67 12.31 3 1 601.04 05ZW 9167.0507 5:36:47.107 -69:29:54.56 9.07 3 1 874.09 05ZW 9167.0510 5:36:40.378 -69:23:17.12 12.54 0 1 529.46 05ZW 9167.0663 5:36:40.058 -69:22:43.64 12.57 3 1 505.04 05ZW Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 LMC-SN1987A STIS/C ACQ F28X50L MIRROR ACQTYPE=POINT 1 3 S -OFFSET CD P Comments: Acquisition on offset star for SN 1987A ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 LMC-SN1987A STIS/C ACCUM F28X50L MIRROR CR-SPLIT=NO 1 60.0 S -HOTSPOTS-5 CD P 2X2 Comments: To fix HST pointing, identify hot spot locations, and map low velocity ring emission for use in interpreting spectrum.
