Abstract We propose to use STIS to take images and diagnostic spectra in the 2900--10250 A range of rapidly-evolving hot spots and other shock features in the equatorial ring (ER) surrounding SN 1987A. A combination of aperture positions through the low and high resolution gratings will provide resolved data on all known and any new hot spots in all optical emission lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8872( 7) - 09/29/00 10:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe the complete SN1987A equatorial ring (ER) and all newly- discovered hot spots with STIS with the 52X2 slit through the G750M/6581, G750L/7751, and G430L/4300 gratings/tilts, and also perform F28X50LP broadband imaging. We will perform an on-board acquisition of the offset star S2 (of Walker & Suntzeff 1990), then an offset to center the ER within the aperture. A short F28X50LP image will be taken during each visit for use as a spatial intensity map, to record the telescope pointing, and to search for the appearance of new hot spots. During Visits 01 and 03, separated by approximately six months, we will obtain 52X2 G750M/6581 spectra centered on the equatorial ring. In order to exactly match the orientation of previous visits (GO 7123 April 1997 and GO/DD 8806 May 2000) and facilitate sensitive difference imaging, the slit position angle needs to be as close as possible to 86.51 degrees [ i.e. ORIENT = 131.55D for the 52X2 aperture ] or 266.51 degrees [ ORIENT = 311.55D ]. Three dithered exposures of ~650 sec each will be taken during each visit. During Vist 02 we will obtain G750L/7751 and G430L/4300 spectra through the 52X2 slit in each of two pointings. The slit will be offset from the center of the ER by +/-0.9 arcseconds, dividing the ER into northern and southern semi-ellipses. The monochromatic arc images of the ER and hot spots in adjacent emission lines will stack with little or no overlap, allowing the two pointings to deliver data at the full spatial and spectral resolution of the G430L and G750L gratings. Important diagnostic lines that are blended will be resolved by the G750M spectra taken nearly simultaneously in Visit 01. Three dithered exposures of 700--1000 seconds each will be taken through both gratings at both slit positions. A position angle as close to 266.51 degrees [ ORIENT = 311.55D ] as possible is desirable; PAs between 260.0D--280.0D [ 305.00D <= ORIENT <= 325.00D ] are tolerable. Although less desirable timewise, a position angle near 86.51 +/-15.0 degree s is viable for Visit 02 as well. It is of higher priority that Visit 01 be taken at PA = 86.51D than Visit 02. We wish to dupicate the slit PA of prior exposures (GO 7123 April 1997 and GO/DD 8806 May 2000) during November 2000 and therefore request a PA of 266.51 degrees E of N [ORIENT = 311.55]. The RPS2 scheduling tool indicates that this ORIENT is only available during a 12 hour window on 2000 Nov 3, however, and if this visit cannot be scheduled during this period we ask that the ORIENT range be expaned in +/-1 degree increments until it can be scheduled, but not to exceed a range of 305.00D <= ORIENT <= 325.00D. This full 20 degree ORIENT range provides a 14.5 day scheduling window. If at all possible, however, we would prefer for the observation to be taken at ORIENT = 311.55. Because of the timing required for monitoring changes in SN1987A, the 180 degree reverse orientation is *NOT* usable here and is planned for Vist 03. A PA as close to 266.51 degrees E of N [ i.e. ORIENT = 311.55] is most desirable, but not absolutely required. The RPS2 scheduling tool indicates that this ORIENT is only available during a 12 hour window on 2000 Nov 3, however, and if this visit cannot be scheduled during this period we ask that the ORIENT range be expaned in +/-1 degree increments until it can be scheduled, but not to exceed a range of 305.00D <= ORIENT <= 325.00D [ the lower limit is needed to prevent Star 3 from overlapping with the ER, the upper limit to minimize confusion of the hot spot spectra with adjacent ER ring material ]. This full 20 degree ORIENT range provides a 14.5 day scheduling window. But we would prefer for the observation to be taken at ORIENT = 311.55D, if at all possible. For monitoring purposes we strongly prefer these observations to be taken in 2000 November, but if they cannot be scheduled within the above constraints, the 180 opposite orientation is usable [ideally ORIENT = 131.55; but 125.00D <= ORIENT <= 145.00D is acceptable]. If this visit can be scheduled during CVZ time, the spectral exposures (40-50, 60-90, 100-120, 130-150) should be expanded evenly to fill the available time. Because of the timing required for monitoring changes in SN 1987A, the 180 degree reverse orientation is *NOT* usable here and is planned for Vist 01. Past STIS spectra (GO 7123, 7587, 8243, 8806) have avoided the use of the following guide stars; we also request their exclusion: 9162.0247 5:35:55.781 -69:09:52.63 8.92 3 1 448.96 05ZW; 9163.0606 5:37:26.026 - 69:21:42.41 12.77 3 1 675.31 05ZW; 9163.0775 5:37:44.940 -69:20:05.68 11.91 3 1 738.05 05ZW; 9163.0933 5:37:36.307 -69:06:44.42 12.84 0 1 913.91 05ZW; 9163.0948 5:37:38.971 -69:10:15.46 11.56 3 1 798.03 05ZW; 9163.0976 5:37:46.306 -69:20:50.42 10.95 3 1 757.05 05ZW; 9163.0979 5:37:47.071 - 69:09:11.09 10.30 3 1 869.06 05ZW; 9166.0229 5:35:26.179 -69:28:02.93 11.36 3 1 663.23 05ZW; 9166.0750 5:34:45.540 -69:23:24.68 12.98 3 1 450.65 05ZW; 9166.0800 5:34:28.980 -69:25:40.04 12.78 3 1 611.46 05ZW; 9167.0336 5:37:02.275 -69:22:51.67 12.31 3 1 601.04 05ZW; 9167.0507 5:36:47.107 - 69:29:54.56 9.07 3 1 874.09 05ZW; 9167.0510 5:36:40.378 -69:23:17.12 12.54 0 1 529.46 05ZW; 9167.0663 5:36:40.058 -69:22:43.64 12.57 3 1 505.04 05ZW Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 LMC-SN1987A STIS/C ACQ F28X50L MIRROR ACQTYPE=POINT 1 3.0 S -OFFSET CD P Comments: Acquisition on offset star for SN 1987A ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 20 LMC-SN1987A STIS/C ACCUM F28X50L MIRROR CR-SPLIT=NO 1 90.0 S -HOTSPOTS-5 CD P 2X2 Comments: To fix HST pointing, identify hot spot locations, and map low velocity ring emission for use in interpreting spectrum.
