Abstract We propose a comprehensive STIS ultraviolet spectroscopic survey of star-forming galaxies in the local universe. The sample covers a broad range of morphologies, chemical composition, and luminosity. The observations will provide spectral coverage between 1200 and 3100 Angstrom, at a resolution of 100 to 200 kms\ and S/N of about 30. The data set will allow us to document and quantify the effects of massive stars on the interstellar medium and to infer implications for the evolution of the host galaxies. Specific issues to be addressed are: (i) the relation of interstellar- line profiles to gravity and macroturbulence, and indications for large-scale outflows of the cool gas; (ii) the search for systematic trends of interstellar-line strengths with metallicity, with the goal of calibrating a new metallicity indicator; (iii) the properties of the low- and high- ionization absorption lines of the interstellar medium and their relation to the X-ray emitting gas; (iv) the properties of dust obscuration in star-forming galaxies and its consequences for deriving star-formation rates; (v) studying the star-formation histories and relating the stellar properties to those of the interstellar medium. This data set, while fundamental in its own right, will also be significant as a template for the restframe-ultraviolet of high-z galaxies. This configuration will provide continuous wavelength coverage between 1175 and 3100 Angstrom\ at a velocity resolution of 100 to 200 kms. The slit width is a compromise between throughput and spectral resolution. The expected fluxes were estimated as follows. The UV light within the slit of most galaxies is dominated by one or more compact starburst clusters. An example is in Figure 5, which shows an FOC (F220W) image of NGC 3690. We analyzed the light distribution in the UV images of the sample galaxies for a flux estimate in the 52x0.2 aperture. Almost all available UV images are for a wavelength of ~2200 Angstrom. A flux estimate for a wavelength of 1425 Angstrom\ was obtained by scaling the observed IUE flux by the expected UV light fraction in the STIS aperture determined from the UV images. The underlying assumption is that the spatial light distribution remains unchanged between 1425 and 2200 Angstrom. On average we find that 12\ the brightest cluster which will be within the STIS aperture. In Table 1 we list several intermediate steps in our flux calculation, together with the most pertinent galaxy properties. The IUE fluxes (column 7) are from Kinney et al. (1993). Column 8 gives the expected fluxes in the STIS 52x0.2 aperture, obtained with the method described above. 2300 Angstrom\ fluxes were estimated in the same way but are not listed in Table 1. Figure 6 is an empirical validation of our flux estimate. There are 11 star-forming galaxies with both IUE and HST spectra. The HST data are with FOS, GHRS, and STIS, employing apertures between 0.2'' and 1.7'' (i.e somewhat larger than the 0.2'' STIS slit). On average, the HST fluxes are lower by factors of 3 -- 4, in line with our previous estimate. Note in particular the FOS spectrum of one cluster in NGC 3690, whose flux is a factor of 10 lower than that of the entire galaxy observed with IUE. This is consistent with our independent determination by measuring the FOC image. Our extensive past experience in UV spectroscopy and the goal to measure faint absorption lines for abundance analysis lead us to require S/N = 30 at central wavelength. As an example, we find exposure times of 13, 200 and 3, 600 s with 9036( 14) - 09/03/02 08:56 - [ 3] G140L and G230L, respectively, for an enclosed galaxy flux of 1 * 10^-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 (cf. column 8 of Table 1). Comparison between 1500 Angstrom\ fluxes measured with IUE and HST (FOS, GHRS, STIS) in 11 star-forming galaxies., 0.05in We emphasize that we were particularly careful when selecting the UV-faintest galaxies (such as, e.g., VII Zw 403). While the exposure times required for these galaxies are much larger than those for brighter sample galaxies, the science goals of this survey would be severely compromised if the fainter galaxies were eliminated. All galaxies were selected to cover the parameter space defined in the Scientific Justification. The sample is reasonably complete at the low (\log L_rmBol < 8.5) and high (\log L_rmBol > 10) end of the starburst luminosity function (excluding ultraluminous infrared galaxies). The distribution has a mean \log (O/H) ~ 8.3, which may correspond to the typical composition of high- z Lyman-break galaxies (Pettini et al. 2000). Each target will be acquired with a standard STIS acquisition. Accurate coordinates are available from the exisiting space imagery. Since more than one cluster can be observed with the long- slit, specific orientations are requested. Previous experience suggests no scheduling concerns. Following the acquisition, G230L and G140L spectra will be obtained in ACCUM mode. All targets are well below the applicable MAMA bright-object limits. No special calibrations are necessary. The total request for all 19 galaxies is 52 orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- There are no special requirements. None are planned.
