Abstract -.07in The HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale and the HST project on the ``Calibration of Nearby Type Ia Supernovae'' have greatly improved our knowledge of the Hubble Constant by providing a solid zero point for the Tully- Fisher (TF) relation and Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa). However, severe inconsistencies remain for distance estimators to early-type galaxies such as surface brightness fluctuations (SBF), the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), the fundamental plane (FP), and the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF). As a result, the distance to the Virgo cluster core remains uncertain by as much as 20\ determination is directly affected by a lingering 0.1 mag (5\ uncertainty in the photometric calibration of the WFPC2. Resolving these issues is essential not only to firm up the extragalactic distance scale, but also to understand the mass and velocity structure of the local universe. SBF in particular is emerging as the method of choice for mapping local velocity fields to 10, 000 kms\ because it offers an order of magnitude less Malmquist bias than TF, and SNIa are too rare to study large scale flows effectively. This project will tighten the photometric calibration of the WFPC2, and provide a solid Cepheid calibration for SBF and PNLF. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9043( 15) - 05/07/02 09:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ underline Cepheid search: 48 orbits. For the Cepheid galaxies, we will follow the same methodology employed by the HST Key Project Team. Each galaxy will be observed at 12 epochs over a 60 day interval using the F555W filter. At 6 of these epochs, F814W observations will also be obtained. When combined with the F555W data, the F814W data will be used to determine the average extinction to the Cepheid sample in each galaxy. The maximum length of the observing window, 60 days, is imposed by the maximum amount of time the HST roll angle can be maintained fixed, which is a important condition for our program. The temporal spacing between subsequent epochs will be carefully planned to ensure optimal coverage of the light curves for Cepheids with period between 10 and 60 days, and therefore minimize aliasing problems with period determination (see Ferrarese et al. 1996 for a detailed description of the observing strategy). Based on our experience with the Key Project data, 2 orbits per epoch in F555W will allow us to reach a limiting magnitude of V=28 in NGC 4647, which means that we will be able to detect Cepheids with mean magnitude V=27 or brighter (corresponding to a 10- day Cepheid). The epochs with both F555W and F814W observations can be accommodated in three (rather than four) orbits without significant losses. For NGC 5128, which is 2 mag closer, 10-day Cepheids can be reached with single orbit exposures in each filter at each epoch. The total number of orbits required is therefore 30 for NGC 4647, and 18 for NGC 5128, for a grand total of 48 orbits dedicated to the Cepheid search. For each filter, exposures obtained at the same epoch will be split into a minimum of two exposures to minimize the effects of cosmic rays. Images obtained in subsequent epochs will be dithered with respect to each other to minimize the impact of dead pixels and other CCD imperfections. The WFPC2 FOV will be positioned and oriented as shown in Figure 3. In particular, for NGC 5128 the PC chip will cover a region substantially uncontaminated by dust, from which an accurate F814W SBF measurement can be obtained. .2in underline WFPC2 photometric calibration: 7 orbits. Because our aim is to probe a region of star -brightness/sky-brightness space not well spanned by other works, we will take both short and long exposures of NGC 5272, NGC 6341 and NGC 2419 and Draco. Two sequences will be obtained on each target, the first sequence using a preflash before each exposure, the second identical to the first, but without preflash. Each sequence will contain two 40s exposures and two 260s exposures in both F555W and F814W; the pair of exposures taken with the same filter will be dithered by a few pixels. The total integration time on the target for each sequence will be 21 minutes. Adding overhead for guide star acquisition and readout, each sequence will fill one orbit, with the result that two orbits (two sequences) will be spent on each target. Draco is a potential target for continuous viewing zone observations; in the CVZ, the observations will only require one orbit. The total number of orbits that will be spent on the photometric calibration is therefore 7. .2in noindent This proposal requests a total of 55 orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- While the Cepheid observations are not time-critical in an absolute sense, once they have begun they should be carried out in the sequence outlined in the previous section, without interruption or omission, to ensure optimum coverage of the Cepheid light curves. All Cepheid observations should also be carried out at the same roll angle. The observations of Draco and the Galactic globular clusters can be executed at any time without roll angle constraints. Ground- based observations will be conducted for all the the calibration fields, but do not in any way affect the scheduling of the proposed HST observations.
