Abstract We propose to obtain WFPC2 multi-color images and STIS emission line spectroscopy of the nuclear regions of 6 edge-on barred spiral galaxies spanning a range of bulge morphologies and bar strengths. Our goal is to quantify the amount of vertical heating in the nuclei, and to test whether or not bars are indeed destroyed and create a bulge if enough mass is accumulated in their centers. Edge-on galaxies provide a unique tool to study the structure and dynamics of barred disks rapidly and extensively, and we have already obtained extensive ground-based data for all our targets. The high spatial resolution of HST is crucial for our project as the efficiency of bar-driven processes is determined by the galaxies' nuclear properties. Our images will yield the nuclear cusp slope and will allow us to determine the conditions under which bars can survive. Color information is required to correct for internal dust extinction, identify population gradients, and evaluate the rate at which disk stars migrate into bulges. STIS will be used to probe the kinematics of the nuclear gas disks and to weigh any unresolved massive point mass (black hole), providing a direct test of bar dissolution scenarios. We will use line-ratio diagnostics to study the physical conditions of the nuclear gas and determine the importance of bar-induced shocks and nuclear spirals for inflow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9046( 33) - 09/19/03 13:59 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Broadband Imaging: We will obtain WFPC2 F336W, F555W, and F814W images for the 6 galaxies in our sample, the selection of which is described in the Scientific Justification. The galaxies central surface brightnesses measured from the ground range from Mu_V=17.5 to 18.5 mag arcsec^-2, with U- V~1.5 and V-I~1.2. Central surface brightnesses measured with HST are generally 1-2 magnitudes brighter, depending on the cusp slope, and surface brightnesses at 1" are typically Mu_V=17.5-19.5 mag arcsec^-2 (Carollo et al. 1998). Our experience with WFPC2 shows that S/N>~25 per pixel is required to properly study the central morphology of bulges, derive central surface brightness profiles and cusp slopes, and produce reliable color maps (Carollo et al. 1997; Carollo & Stiavelli 1998). Using Mu_V(r=1")=18.5, an average sky brightness, and S/N=25, the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator yields required exposure times of 1200 s in F555W and 800 s in F814W for PC1. Because photon noise from the sources dominates, these exposures can be split for cosmic rays removal without any loss. Allowing for a 6 min guide star acquisition, 5 min overhead for each pair of CR-SPLIT exposures, and 1 min WFPC2 efficiency, the total time required for the F555W and F814W observations is 51 min, about the shortest visibility time for one orbit (52 min). Obtaining a S/N>~25 with the F336W filter is too time consuming. However, in one orbit (one split 2400 s exposure plus overheads), S/N~10 can be reached in the nuclei. The F555W and F814W imaging thus takes one orbit per galaxy, and the F336W imaging another one, for a total of 12 orbits for 6 objects. We will adjust the integration times optimally for each object, in order to fill completely the orbits (52-60 min). Emission Line Spectroscopy: We will obtain STIS G750M and G430M emission line long-slit spectra for every galaxy in our sample, with the aim of determining the black hole mass (or setting an upper limit). To insure proper positioning of the slit during the STIS target acquisition, we will use our WFPC2 images as ``early acquisition data'' (see Special Requirements) and will experiment with the different acquisition algorithms for each object before the STIS observations are carried out. The STIS Target Acquisition Exposure Time Calculator shows that one minute exposures will be sufficient with the F28X50LP filter. A precision of 0.1" in the direction perpendicular to the slit is sufficient for our edge-on disks, so we do not require additional peakup acquisition exposures. The spatial resolution of HST/STIS is essential to measure the black hole mass and nuclear kinematics in our objects, as the radii of influence of the putative black holes is likely to be in the range 0.03-0.3". This follows from Sigma~150-200 kms and D~10-50 Mpc, with r_BH~0.09" (M_BH/10^6 Msun) (Sigma/100 kms)^-2 (D/1 Mpc)^-1 and M_BH=1.30*10^8 (Sigma/200 kms)^4.72 Msun (Merritt & Ferrarese 2000). The latter relation is however plagued by observational biases and involves only few spirals, even less barred spirals. Any prediction is thus at best approximate. We will use the G750M grating at prime tilt Lambda_c=6768 Angstrom to measure the gas kinematics. The resulting wavelength range includes the H_alpha and [NII] lines, as well as the [SII] lines at 6716 and 6731 Angstrom. We will use the 52X0.1 slit without binning to properly sample the spectral PSF and obtain a velocity resolution of about 50 kms, ideally suited for our purposes. We will align the slit with the major axis of the galaxies, refining the central position angle with our WFPC2 images if necessary. For edge- on systems, there are no uncertainties in the position of the center of mass, position angle, and inclination, contrary to face-on galaxies where multiple slit positions are required to deal with these. Central line fluxes 9046( 33) - 09/19/03 13:59 - [ 3] measured for our objects from the ground are 10^-14-10^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 at H_alpha and [NII]. Using the STIS Exposure Time Calculator and assuming an extended background source with Mu_V=16.5 mag arcsec^-2, an average sky brightness, and a line-width of 150 kms, we expect S/N~7 per pixel in the line after continuum subtraction for a pair of CR-SPLIT exposures totalling 900 s. Simple simulations show that we can then recover velocities to about ~15-20 kms, sufficient for our purposes, and that we can derive the general shape of the line profiles. Constraining the conditions in the nuclear disks also requires the use of line-ratio diagnostics based on the H_beta and [OIII] lines. We will also obtain spectra with the G430M grating at prime tilt Lambda_c=4961 Angstrom. We will use the 52X0.2 slit and 2-pixel binning along the dispersion axis, yielding a velocity resolution of 68kms, comparable to that obtained with the G750M grating. Assuming a H_beta/H_alpha ratio of 0.3 and the same conditions as above, S/N~5 per pixel in the line will be obtained in 900 s. This will allow us to measure the ratios of individual components of the line profiles to about 20%, sufficient to use standard line-ratio diagnostics for the ionization mechanism, gas density, and shock velocity (Binette et al. 1985; Dopita & Sutherland 1996). Allowing for a 6 min guide star acquisition, 6 min STIS/ACQ target acquisition, 900 s exposure and 5+1 min overhead for each pair of CR-SPLIT observations, the G750M and G430M spectra can be obtained in 54 min. The STIS spectroscopy thus requires 1 orbit per galaxy, for a total of 6 orbits. Again, we will adjust the integration times to fill each orbit optimally. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We intend to use the WFPC2 images as ``early acquisition data'' for all objects without existing HST imaging (4/6; see Duplications of Observations). The images will yield accurate positions for the galaxy centers and will allow us to optimize the STIS diffuse target acquisition strategy for each object (as well as verify other observational parameters, such as the central position angle). This is essential for our program as our ground-based observations do not constrain the nuclear structure of the galaxies well. For those objects, the WFPC2 data should thus always be acquired first in a separate visit.
