Abstract The atomic and nuclear characteristics of the light elements Li, Be and B make their photospheric abundances ideal tracers of internal physical processes in stars. Both Li and Be have been heavily utilized to this end since their diminished abundances are a direct result of the extent of internal slow mixing between surface and interior layers, as we have shown with our ground-based data. Boron provides a fresh and special probe because it survives to greater depths inside stars than does Li or Be, and can thus uniquely reveal the depth of mixing. We propose to observe B in stars with very large depletions of Li and Be, i.e. stars which have been the most seriously affected by mixing. Previously, we have found one star in which B might be slightly depleted; new observations are needed to establish whether or not B depletion really occurs in stars, and if yes, how much. Our published detailed stellar models agree remarkably well with the correlated depletion of Li and Be. Similar models imply that the Big Bang ^7Li abundance has been depleted, up to 0.3dex according to ^6Li data. However, such models do not deplete B. It is thus imperative (for improved knowledge of both, stellar interiors and cosmology) to establish whether low mass stars deplete B, and thus the degree to which such models are or are not realistic. In low mass dwarfs, B can only be observed from space, using HST/STIS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9048( 5) - 04/13/01 09:16 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Additional comments during Phase II. For the E230M observations, we employ a setting of 2415A, rather than the 2707A setting indicated in Phase I. The reason is that the setting at 2415A will allow us to also observe the boron lines neat 2090A. Thus, we will be able to check on the boron abundance derived from the 2497A lines; i.e. we get twice the info for free has worked on 2090A data from previous HST cycle(s) and has kindly volunteered to give us his line list. Using RPS2 and the exposure time calculator, we have verfied that our ACK and ACK/PEAK exposures are within acceptable tolerances. Original Phase I comments. A single STIS observation will be made of each star (below), using the E230M or E230H grating, which should yield similar performance as the instrumental setups utilized during our past B observations. The STIS data will include the 2500 Angstrom region, which contains the B I resonance lines at Lambda2496.8 and Lambda2497.7. Our experience from the past years has verified that S/N~50 is needed to derive accurate abundances in F and G stars from the B lines (Boesgaard et al. 1998a). We also know that R~30, 000 (E230M) will allow us to analyze the spectra successfully, despite moderate blending of the B I features. To determine exposure times, we have used the STIS Exposure Time Calculator, carefully taking into account the surface temperature of the star. Our orbit calculations include adequate allowances for target acquisition, etc. In all cases, a fraction of an orbit suffices to acquire sufficient S/N; however, there is not enough time in a single orbit to set up and observe a second object. While E230M is sufficient, E230H is preferable, so for sufficiently brights stars E230H is used instead, if S/N = 50 can be attained in a single orbit. Two of our targets are in the CVZ, enabling use of E230H for those stars. Our (solar metallicity) program objects (Table 1) have been meticulously culled out of our extensive surveys of Li and Be using Keck/HIRES (R = 45, 000 = 3 pixels FWHM), CFHT/Gecko (R = 120, 000 = 2.5 pixels FWHM), and the UH 88'' (R = 80, 000 = 2 pixels FWHM). The single most important criterion was that the star be severely depleted in Be relative to undepleted stars (see Deliyannis et al. 1998 for discussion on determining what is an undepleted star). All our program stars are depleted in Be by 1 - 2 dex or more. It was also important to select stars with low vsini, to minimize blending in the B line region. All our Be-depleted stars have vsini less than 10 km/sec. As companions can contaminate spectra, we also avoided known SB2's. None of our high resolution Li and Be spectra show evidence for binarity. A couple of notes: HR 7454 is listed in the Bright Star Catalog as SB. However, Duquennoy et al. (1991, A&AS 88, 281) list a high probability of constant radial velocity, on the basis of their Coravel data. An old study of HR 7955 reports double lines (Spite & Spite 1973 A&A 25, 325). However, we have observed this star at several different epochs with the resolutions and instrumentation listed above, at very high S/N, and in addition have some spectra with comparably high quality of Boesgaard & Lavery (1986 ApJ, 309, 762), taken on four consecutive nights: ALL of our spectra show very clean and clearly defined single lines. Note that the Lambda2500 B I region in low mass stars has been calibrated carefully in previous studies (ours and those of others) involving HST spectra of stars with a variety of stellar parameters (Procyon, two low gravity Hyades giants, the red giants Beta Gem and Arcturus, and the high gravity halo dwarf Gmb 1830), as well as new studies utilizing high resolution, high S/N UV solar spectra (Cunha & Smith 1999, ApJ, 512, 1006). Furthermore, the absolute boron abundance scale is now well- established (Cunha, Smith, Boesgaard, & Lambert 2000, ApJ, 530, 939). Given \ a) the availability of these quality linelists with suitably calibrated atomic data \ b) our considerable experience with the synthesizing stellar spectra (including in the boron region) to compare with high resolution observational data, the path from the observations to reliable abundance determinations is a straightforward one. (E.g. see B spectrum of HR 962 and synthesis, Fig. 1.) Real Time Justification ----------------------- Two targets, HD17948 and HD198084, are in the CVZ, enabling use of the higher resolution E230H instead of E230M, in a single orbit for each star. Although E230M is adequate, E230H is preferable.
