Abstract Flow collimation in evolved stars is neither expected nor understood. Classical theories of stellar evolution do not predict and cannot explain this bipolarity. More exotic concepts (binary interactions, spun-up atmospheres, poloidal or toroidal magnetized winds) have been proposed, but observations are yet to verify or falsify any of their predictions. We propose to probe the near-nuclear morphology and kinematics of four bright, low-extinction targets whose large-scale structure is highly bipolar. Our goal is to provide a detailed description of the circumnuclear outflows, to uncover the physical structure and nature of the collimator, and to evaluate the speculative collimation mechanisms. The bright nucleus has hampered efforts to explore the nebular collimators that lie close to the star, so we'll use STIS to disperse the nuclear light and, thus, to avoid its glare. A secondary goal is to obtain second-epoch WFPC2 images of all targets. The outflow speeds predict readily measurable proper motions of >~2 PC pix in 3 yr at distances of 0.5--1 kpc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9050( 14) - 11/08/01 10:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Each target is a bipolar nebula with a well-defined symmtery axis. One goal is to complement existing ground-based long- slit large-scale kinematic maps of each of the targets by probing their structure and kinematics very close to the bright central nucleus. A second goal is to repeat WFPC2 images found in the HST archives to look for proper motions of knots and filaments seen near the nucleus and lobe edges, jets, and possible bullets further out. The strategy to achieve the first goal will be to map the brightness and kinematics of the near -nuclear regions using the 0arcs1*52" slit in a tight grid of offset positions. The grid consists of seven parallel slits at offsets of 0arcs0, +/-0arcs1, +/- 0arcs3, and +/-0arcs5, called ``parallel slit spectra" (4 consecutive orbits per target) and one orthogonal slit position along the nebular minor axis centered on the nucleus (1 orbit). The parallel slit spectra will map the outflow pattern from the circumnuclear region into the lobes, whereas the orthogonal slit position ties the parallel slit spectra together and provides a glimpse of the kinematics of any disk or collimator that surrounds the nucleus. Two grating tilts, G750M(6581) and G430M(5093), will be used at every slit position. Narrowband WFPC2 images (1 or 2 orbits per target) will be used to meet the second goal of detecting proper motions. STIS comments: The STIS G430M grating tilt, 5093, includes images in the lines of O III4959 & 5007Angstrom\ lines as well as a selection of bright permitted and forbidden lines such as He I 5015Angstrom, Fe III5011Angstrom, Fe II 5018Angstrom, and Fe II5158+69Angstrom, that arise in the dense circumstellar outflow zone. The G750M grating tilt, 6581, includes the HAlpha, N II, S II and He I 6678Angstrom\ lines plus the high-density tracers Ni II6534+6667Angstrom, C II 6575Angstrom, and Fe II6587Angstrom\ circumstellar lines. The sets of parallel- slit observations will be made in four consecutive orbits in order to maintain guide star lock without the need for re acquiring and fine-tuning the pointing. The first orbit will include a wavecal, target acquisition, peak up, and observations of 3, 30, and 2x300 seconds in each grating tilt on the star. Subsequent orbits will be used for similar observations at pairs of offset locations. Peaking the nucleus in the slit and new wavecals should not be necessary after the first orbit. The staggered exposure times allow us to extend the dynamic range of the observations. The bright stellar HAlpha line will be saturated in all but the shortest exposure. To ameliorate this problem we shall confer with STScI staff about using the unsupported 0arcs1*52" slit with a fiducial blocker of 0arcs055 width behind which we can hide the star. The advantage of the fiducial is that it suppresses scattered starlight within STIS (fig. 13.92 of the STIS manual) by a factor of ten, greatly enhancing our ability to probe structure near the nucleus (Ted Gull of the STIS team, private communication). The primary disadvantage is that an additional orbit per target might be necessary in order to re-peak the nucleus behind the blocking fiducial. (This extra orbit is NOT being requested.) During Phase II scheduling we shall try to add a quick STIS image in the O IILambda3727Angstrom\ emission line with the F28x50OII filter. Although O II and N II images should appear nearly identical, there is one unique advantage to imaging the circumnuclear regions in O II: the central stars are very red and, hence, relatively faint relative to the expected nebular surface brightness. This allows us to probe the structure very close into the nucleus while avoiding saturation and scattered light, unlike N II images obtained with WFPC2. Note that O II images are all but impossible with WFPC2 owing to its poor UV response. No additional orbits are being requested for the STIS O II image; it is simply a ``mode of opportunity''. The O II image will be added at the start of the first orbit or at the end of the fourth orbit if time permits. (Accordingly, O II imaging has not been noted on the cover pages of the proposal.) WFPC2 comments: The nuclear regions of all of the targets have been observed before using WFPC2 and various narrowband filters. As noted elsewhere, ground-based Echelle observations show the presence of gas with motions of >~100 km/sec near each nucleus and up to 500 km/sec at larger distances. 100 km/sec at 1 kpc corresponds to 0arcs03, or 2/3 of a PC pixel. Proper motions of 1/10th of a PC pixel have been reliably detected ( e.g., \ Reed et al. 1999). The nuclear regions are bright and S/N is not an issue. Rather, our greatest concern is saturation by the bright nuclei of the targets. The optimum exposure times can easily be gleaned from archival data available. Also, WFPC2's CTE problems are not a concern. F502N, F656N and F658N images are requested for all targets for which corresponding images are in the archives. The exposures will consist of a sequence of short and long exposures which duplicate the ORIENT and object placement of earlier imaging programs as much as possible. (This procedure helps to minimize the effects of optical distortions in searching for structural changes.) Additional M2--9 comments: More is known about the circumnuclear regions of M2--9 than the other targets. For example, the morphology of the inner regions shows substantial changes on time scales of a few years (Doyle et al. 2000) which are most conspicuous in O III. We propose to use four filters for M2--9: F502N, F656N, F658N, and F673N. The F656N and F658N images will help to untangle the overlapping STIS HAlpha and N II lines with the 2" slit. We shall also observe M2--9 in the S II lines -- another low- ionization line -- since S II is relatively strong near the nucleus and the nuclear continuum is far weaker than in F658N. This will help to circumvent nuclear saturation problems. Finally, we propose a short exposure through the F502N filter since an earlier F502N exposure in 1997 shows a knotty jet near the nebula's symmetry axis which is both precessing and outflowing. This is an ideal emission line for uncovering proper motions in the outflows; motions of several pixels are easy to predict from the conclusions of Doyle et al.
