Abstract We propose to perform high spatial resolution and moderate spectral resolution 3000Angstrom to 5700Angstrom STIS long-slit imaging spectroscopy of Mars, to search for and globally map the presence of iron-bearing minerals that are diagnostic of specific climatic conditions. STIS measurements would be obtained by push-broom scanning the 0.2" slit across the planet during four separate visits spaced ~90degrees apart in Martian longitude. These hyperspectral STIS image cubes will be complemented by near-simultaneous WFPC2 UV-VIS imaging that will allow us to quantify the effects of water ice clouds or other aerosols on our STIS spectra. These STIS data will provide the ability to detect and map small abundances (~1 jarosite K, Na, H_3OFe_3(SO_4)_2(OH)_6, goethite (AlphaFeOOH), hematite (alphaFe_2O_3), and other ferric and ferrous phases. These minerals are formed under specific environmental conditions, and some are potential sinks for Martian atmospheric volatiles. Our search will be conducted at a spatial scale comparable to existing spacecraft orbital spectroscopy data (~15-20 km/pixel) and in a wavelength region not sampled by existing or planned Mars spacecraft instrumentation. These observations also provide complementary measurements in support of current and future NASA Mars exploration missions. We require these observations to be scheduled near opposition (June-July 2001) in order to maximize spatial resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9052( 20) - 08/20/01 15:59 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ These are time-critical observations that should be obtained as close as possible to Mars closest approach to Earth on 21 June 2001. We are requesting four sets of observations, each consisting of four orbits. Each set should consist of three orbits of STIS observations to scan entirely across the planet, followed (or preceded) as closely as possible by one orbit of supporting WFPC2 imaging. We require $\sim$90$\deg$ Martian longitude spacing between the sets of observations so that STIS spectra of all surface regions can be obtained at two emission angles: 0$\deg$-45$\deg$, and 45$\deg$- 90$\deg$. In order to obtain the required $\sim$90$\deg$ spacing of Martian longitudes, the start of each set should be separated by modulo($\sim$6 hours), so that they are evenly distributed around the planet. We ARE NOT placing any requirements on the exact starting time or Martian longitude of the starting orbit. Past experience (GO 8152, A. Lubenow, pers. comm) indicates that it is possible to schedule such $\sim$90$\deg$ spaced observations and to coordinate both WFPC2 and STIS longitude coverage, if the four sets of observations are spread over several days around closest approach. This scheme worked well in 1999 and we would like to use it again in 2001. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We are requesting four sets of observations, each consisting of four orbits, with all to occur as close as possible to the closest approach of Mars on 21 June 2001. Each set should consist of three orbits of STIS observations to scan entirely across the planet, followed (or preceded) immediately by one orbit of supporting WFPC2 imaging. We require modulo ($\sim$90degrees) Martian longitude spacing between the sets of observations so that STIS spectra of all surface regions can be obtained at two emission angles: 0degrees-45degrees, and 45degrees-90degrees. In order to obtain the required $\sim$90degrees spacing of Martian longitudes, the start of each set should be separated by $\sim$6 hours, or four orbits ( i.e. start set 1 on orbit n, set 2 on n+4, set 3 on n+8, set 4 on n+12), so that they are evenly distributed around the planet.
