Abstract HD 209458 b is the first extrasolar planet known to transit the disk of its parent star. Precise measurement of both the photometric transit curve and the radial velocity orbit has allowed for an accurate estimation of the mass, radius, average density and surface gravity. We propose to detect directly the gas giant planet orbiting HD 209458 in reflected light by observing the secondary eclipse, i.e. when the planet is occulted by the star. We will use STIS to disperse the stellar flux over a large number of detector pixels. The photometric signal is produced by summing the counts over a desired band. For each of six bands spanning the UV to the near-IR, we will obtain sufficient precision either to detect the planet, or to limit its geometric albedo in each band to less than 0.2. Combining data at all wavelengths, our detection threshold for the average geometric albedo will be 0.08. These data span the wavelengths over which the majority of the stellar flux is emitted. Thus we will quantify the net energy deposited into the planet, the key remaining unknown in comparing the measured planetary radius to theoretical models of its structure and evolutionary history. Furthermore, the measured wavelength- dependent albedo will provide stringent constraints on the numerous atmospheric models for these objects. We should be able to identify the dominant scattering sources, such as Rayleigh scattering and atmospheric silicates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9055( 9) - 11/01/01 16:33 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe HD 209458 during four visits. For two of these visits, we will use the blue low-resolution grating G430L, and for the other two visits, we will use the red low- resolution grating G750L. Each visit will consist of five orbits. We have observed, in our previous DD-8789 program, that the photometry is not adequately stable during the first orbit of a visit; however, excellent stability is maintained for subsequent orbits. We will time the observations so that, for each visit, two orbits will occur during eclipse, and two will occur outside of eclipse. Further details on the timing constraints are given in the ``Special Requirements'' section. The important point is that a very similar set of constraints was placed on our previous DD-8789 visits, and these were accommodated within the HST orbit scheduling. In a 22 s exposure in G430L and a wide slit (52 * 2 arcsec), the brightest pixel in a single image will have 1.3 * 10^5 e- (at 508 nm), and the total e- over the entire detector would be 1.4 * 10^8. Dividing this wavelength coverage into three bands with roughly equal numbers of e- (e.g. 290--440 nm ; 440--500 nm ; 500--570 nm), then the precision in each band per exposure will be 1.4 * 10^-4. Of course we are free to redefine the band limits at any point in the analysis; we are simply illustrating a possible choice here. We will use a 32 pixel subarray, with a readout time of 19 s, so that each exposure requires a total of 41 s. For orbits 2--5, we can accommodate 68 such exposures per orbit (slightly less for orbit 1), and thus achieve a precision of 1.7 * 10^-5 during each orbit. Since there will be two out- of-eclipse orbits and two in-eclipse orbits, we will be able to detect a secondary eclipse with a depth of 5.2 * 10^-5 at the 3 Sigma level. Combining the results of two such visits, we will achieve a 3 Sigma detection of a secondary eclipse with a depth of 3.6 * 10^-5 in each of the example bands given. This corresponds to a geometric albedo of p_Lambda = 0.18. Similar numbers hold for 30 s exposures with G750L. Again, choosing three bands (as an example) with roughly equal numbers of e- (e.g. 524--630 nm ; 630--750 nm; 750-- 1020 nm), we will again achieve a 3 Sigma detection of a secondary eclipse with a depth of 3.6 * 10^-5 in each band. Again, this corresponds to a geometric albedo of p_Lambda = 0.18. Of course we needn't subdivide the data into bands. Co-adding all of the counts during these visits, we will be able to detect a secondary eclipse as faint as 1.5 * 10^-5 at the 3 Sigma level. This corresponds to an average geometric albedo of barp=0.08, where the average has been weighted by the distribution of recorded photons (primarily a function of the stellar output, but also the STIS throughput). The numbers above quantify our predicted detection limits for a convincing level of statistical significance (3 Sigma). However, we note that the current models from several groups (see, e.g., Marley et al. 1999) each predict large values for the albedo (p=0.4--0.6) over most of this range (particularly shortward of 600 nm). In this case, we would have a unimpeachable detection. We are pushing the envelope of high precision S/N capabilities of STIS. Toward this end we will use contemporaneous flats as routinely available for G750L, and also request that such be allowed for G430L. Furthermore, we have noted in our DD-8789 observations (which provide the most stringent test of high S/N STIS/CCD capabilities to date) that the first orbit of a visit has transients unique to other orbits decreasing its utility for final results. The latter is only a loss of efficiency in the worst case that the first orbit of data must be ignored. In an attempt to reach equilibrium conditions for the CCD as have held previously in all orbits after the first we would like to have contemporaneous flats taken starting in the occultation period immediately before the initial target acquisition. We suggest this as a possible improvement for the time series photometry, but do not view as a requirement should implementation be too difficult. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We will need to schedule our visits so as to observe the system at times spanning secondary eclipse. In particular, we wish to schedule the first visit at each grating so that one of the orbits spans a time of either ingress or egress. Fortuitously, the ratio of the HST orbital period to the planet orbital period then guarantees that a subsequent visit one planetary orbital period later will fill in the portions of the phase previously unobserved due to earth occultation. The period and epoch of HD 209458 are both known to an accuracy of several seconds, and hence with sufficient accuracy for the necessary phasing constraints during a phase II proposal. These timing constraints are within the limits that can be accommodated by HST, and indeed very similar constraints were required and achieved in our observations of this system earlier this year. We will not require coordinated observations with other observatories. We will plan to update the ephemeris of HD 209458 transits should better values become available before execution of visits. The narrow phase contraints listed of: 0.4432-0.4449, or 0.4509-0.4526 are intended to place egress and ingress repectively during orbits 4 or 3. If these tight constraints become problematic for scheduling (windows are 8.6 minutes), then we can consider a compromise to 0.4423-0.4538 (58 minutes) that does not assure directly observing during ingress and egress but still assures that two orbits span secondary eclipse. We note that SAA interuptions during unocculted time would be directly deleterious to our science and therefore require that the observations either hide the SAA, or make use of SAA free orbits. Calibration Justification ------------------------- We have requested special calibrations in the form of more extensive flat fields for this innovative program that is pushing the envelope of S/N for the STIS/CCD. In Phase I we requested that "contemporaneous flats" be obtained not only for G750L, but also for G430L. For G430L we include flats that extend for about 20 minutes into the occultation period following only the 5th of 5 orbits. For one G430L visit this is done with G430L + 52X2 slit to provide test at S/N = 1000 per pixel (at right side where stellar signal as well is highest) including possible spectral components (flat color terms, illumination pattern), for the other G430L visit we obtain higher S/N imaging flats than are available close in time from the archive. For G750L we collect G750L + 52X2 flats to S/N 1000 per pixel during each central occultation, and after the last orbit a series of G750L + 0.3X0.09 (slit recommended for contemporaneous flats appropriate to point sources) at much (about 500) higher S/N than using the default CCDFLATs. We have kept use of flats to what we consider a reasonable minimum for our science program; in particular for 80% of the G430L orbits no flats are obtained thus allowing the potential for hiding the SAA. For G750L the first 4 orbits use a short sequence also allowing for partial SAA hiding.
