Abstract We propose a WFPC2 snapshot survey of red QSOs discovered in The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) to investigate the detailed properties of their host galaxies. This large, possibly dominant, population of QSOs in the local universe has been previously overlooked because reddening by (intrinsic) obscuration along our line of sight causes their colors to be too red for identification by traditional "UV- excess" techniques. Their near-IR colors are similar to PG- type (UV-excess) QSOs, but it is far from certain whether they are indeed from the same parent population or represent a completely new class of QSO. Hints from our polarimetry survey suggest that they may simply be highly inclined PG-type QSOs. Alternatively, they may represent objects with high dust cover from an interaction similar to that seen in the Ultra- and Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs & HIGs). Regardless, the strong attenuation of the nuclear UV/optical light affords us with the unique opportunity to investigate the optical properties of QSO host galaxies without the pitfalls encountered while observing QSOs whose blinding nuclear emission often completely overwhelms the host galaxy, even in HST images. The snapshot images will form a comprehensive census, and strong legacy database, of the 2MASS QSO host galaxies that can be compared directly with previous HST imaging studies of PG-type QSOs, ULIRGs and HIGs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9057( 2) - 02/14/01 15:07 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain snapshots of 54 representative 2MASS QSOs using the PC (WFPC2) and F814W. The red filter allows us high sensitivity to the older stellar population that is expected from the host and old tidal debris, while still benefiting from the attenuation of the nuclear light. Despite the greater resolution of STIS/CCD (clear/LP), we choose to use WFPC2 because of the larger probability of snapshot scheduling (as outlined in the Cycle 10 CP), and because the narrower passband eases comparison with other samples and the interpretation of the resulting images. Excluding overheads, we expect to obtain, on average, approximately 16 minutes of integration time per source in the F814W filter. to mitigate against cosmic rays in the final frames. We will image the QSOs with the PC in order to more fully sample the PSF. Although this choice may reduce our sensitivity to very low surface brightness, it is our judgment that the increased resolution will greatly enhance our ability to detect and resolve small scale structures very near the nucleus. Using the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator, we can expect to achieve a signal- to-noise ratio of 3-5 per pixel on surface brightness levels of ~ 20-21 mag at I. This is faint enough to obtain detailed morphological information down to r_1/2 of the host galaxy in these systems, based upon previous observations of PG QSOs at this wavelength (Surace et al. 1998). Overheads for acquisition and read-out add approximately 8 minutes for a total of 24 minutes per target. We understand that no guarantee is made of these observations even if the TAC approves the program. However, given the 30-70% completion rate for past snapshot programs, we would still obtain images of 15-40 objects. The minimum is still comparable in size to the sample of 20 QSOs imaged by Bahcall et al. (1997). Finally, we have assembled a team with vast experience in observing with HST, and in interpreting the imaging results, especially for QSOs, ULIRGs & HIGs. Hines: NICMOS, WFPC2, STIS; Smith: FOC, WFPC2; Schmidt: WFPC2, FOC, NICMOS; Armus & Surace: WFPC2, NICMOS. This will ensure a swift analysis of the non-proprietary data. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We have no implicit plans. However, we note Cycle 2 Chandra observations of 26 2MASS QSOs in our snap-shot sample (PI: Wilkes; CoI: Smith, Schmidt, Cutri, Nelson). Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Because we do not know the I-band flux densities of the host galaxies a priori, we chose to integrate to a uniform depth rather than try to guess a flux density.
