Proposal For 3. Cycle GO 10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Investigators Contact? PI: Ivan King University of California - Berkeley CoI: Dr. Jay Anderson University of California, Berkeley N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract Using high-precision astrometric techniques that we have developed and demonstrated, we propose to measure the trigonometric parallax of 47 Tuc, which is about 1/4 milliarcsec, to an accuracy of 10%. By repeating a field that was observed in 1995, we will measure the secular motion of the cluster stars with respect to the SMC background with sufficient accuracy that the parallax can be measured directly from the displacements within Cycle 10. Constraints of orientation, and the shape of the WFPC2 footprint, require that we take images at 3-month intervals, rotating 90 degrees each time. This project will have an important impact on the globular- cluster distance scale, and through it on the distance scale and age of the Universe. By doing so it will demonstrate the astrometric power of HST par excellence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9058( 3) - 02/16/01 10:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ These observations serve two purposes: (1) to measure the mean motion of cluster stars with respect to SMC stars, by comparing the Cycle 10 observations with those made in 1995, with sufficient accuracy to allow for this motion during Cycle 10, and (2) to measure the parallactic motion during Cycle 10. Figure 1 shows a proper-motion separation that we have already made in this field, from material less extensive than we are proposing here. It is clear from the rightmost section that we get an excellent pure sample of SMC stars. The 1st-epoch observations consist of 10 exposures in F555W and 10 in F814W, with lengths ranging from 1400 to 1800s. (It is from these images that we know how many SMC stars we have.) The faintest SMC stars that we can use are about equally strong in each filter. We propose to take the new exposures with F606W, whose throughput for these stars is more that twice that of F555W. The Cycle 9 RPS2 tells us that in each orbit we can get 700 + 800 + 800s; thus for 18 exposures we need 6 orbits at each of our Cycle 10 epochs. Our choice of filter is based on throughput, since what we need now is enough photons to get good positions. The 700- 800s exposures with F606W will match the longer exposures of the 1st epoch. Our strategy of 4 sets of observations, with 3 months between, is driven by the arrangement of the WF chips. The allowed orientations of HST are dictated by the needs of the solar array, and correspond to times of the year. If we had 2 sets of observations 6 months apart, the overlap of the WF chips at a nearly opposite orientation would be poor. What we propose to do is to observe every 3 months, with an orientation change of 90 degrees which conveniently complements the needs of the solar array. Each star in the field will fall on some one of the WF chips at 3 of the 4 epochs, and 17% of the stars will fall on the PC at the remaining epoch. Thus for every star we will have the 2 ends of either the major or the minor axis of the parallax ellipse, plus one end of the other axis, and for 17% of the stars we will have both ends of both axes. One of our Cycle 10 epochs will exactly match the pointing and orientation of the 1995 images. We believe that we are using the optimum field for this project. From careful examination of background densities on Digital Sky Survey images, we determined that even by going far out in 47 Tuc on the side facing the SMC we would not significantly increase the number of SMC stars. Much more important is that by repeating a 1995 field we have the security of getting a determination of exactly the right secular motion, including the cluster rotation, at just the place where we need it. Real Time Justification ----------------------- To achieve the right parallax factors, we need scheduling within one month after September 29, December 27, March 27, and June 27, respectively; these are the optimal dates for the parallax factors corresponding to the ends of the major and minor axes. This will also allow the necessary orientations of 23.7D, 113.7D, 203.7D, and 293.7D, respectively. It is also desirable that the October visit be as close as possible to the Oct. 25-26 date of the 1st epoch. We have run a dummy program in RPS2 and verified that all 4 of these orientations are schedulable at the times specified (at least in the time period covered by the Cycle 9 RPS2).
