Abstract He II LyAlpha absorption at 304(1+z) Angstrom\ is a far more sensitive tracer of the IGM than its H I counterpart. The recent detection of such absorption in a small handful of quasars, albeit with limited data quality and tiny sample size, demonstrates the great potential of such a probe. Unfortunately, the lines of sight toward the majority of z ~ 3 quasars are intercepted by Lyman-limit systems, and these quasars' UV flux is cut off redward of the He II LyAlpha feature. In order to sample more than just a few clean lines of sight to high redshift, and with good quality spectra, it is necessary to find additional high-redshift, UV-bright quasars. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which has discovered more than 2600 quasars and will identify ~20 000 quasars per year, with provides a very substantial resource for new, bright, high-redshift quasars. In a continuation of our SNAPSHOT survey GO-8582, we propose to take MAMA spectra of approximately 30 such quasars in each of the next three cycles. The goal is to find additional rare z > 2.9 quasars having sufficient UV flux to allow detailed He II LyAlpha absorption follow-on spectroscopic studies (at good S/N and resolution) with STIS and COS in future HST cycles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9067( 2) - 02/14/01 15:09 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ As of this writing, we have a target list of 20 on-hand, of which the brightest five are presented on p. 2. It appears unlikely that all of our Cycle-9 targets will be observed, any quasars that remain at the end of Cycle-9 will be placed in the Cycle-10 list. We have checked and the HST and other catalogs to confirm that none of the quasars in our current list have been observed or planned with HST (or other UV satellites). Furthermore, SDSS is anticipated to produce ~ 8 new HST candidates each month, so by the Phase II deadline we expect to have at least 50 additional candidates. The high quality optical SDSS spectra have resolution of order 2 Angstrom, and are also consulted in pre-screening among our best cases; intervening Mg ii and/or C iv absorption lines may indicate the presence (and reveal the redshift) of possible LLS potentially blocking the UV flux, allowing us to further optically pre-screen some of the quasars even in advance of the proposed STIS observations. We used the on- line STIS exposure- time calculator to estimate the data quality. While the imaging mode is generally suitable for our targets, field stars of unknown type may cause a potential violation of the MAMA bright-object limit. Therefore we make the simulations in the spectroscopic mode. For the faintest sources the results will be far better with a slit, because of the background. For the faintest source in our list (V=18.5, or f_Lambda ~ 1.5 * 10^-16 \ergscmA) and with the FUV-MAMA detector and the G140L and a slit of 52'' * 0.''5, 10-minute exposure will yield a S/N ~ 3 per resolution element at 1400 Angstrom\ for an average sky background. This is sufficient to verify whether the object has a detectable UV flux to carry out \he\ Ly-alpha\ observations. According to the HST Primer, a typical target acquisition is ~12 min, and the instrumental overhead for the MAMA is 5 min. Thus the total required time for one target is 27 min, which is well below the 45-min ceiling for snapshots and is more flexible to schedule.
