Abstract It is now commonly accepted that almost every galaxy should host in its center a supermassive black hole (BH). Supermassive BH's may have played a major role in galaxy evolution as the recently found correlation between the black- hole mass and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion seems to witness. However it should be kept in mind that the current demography of supermassive BH's suffers of important biases, related to the limited sampling over the different basic properties of their host galaxies. In particular it is evident that the number of BH mass estimates in spiral galaxies is strongly underrepresented. Moreover up to now only two spiral galaxies have very accurate BH mass measurments. Therefore we propose new STIS spectroscopic observations to map the ionized gas velocity field of 3 early-type disk galaxies, for which we will be able to derive high precision BH mass measurements. Indeed the sample galaxies have been selected by means of ground-based high resolution spectroscopy among 37 observed objects, since we recognize in their central regions the clear presence of a circumnuclear Keplerian disk of ionized disk suitable for dynamical modelling. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9068( 12) - 03/13/02 17:06 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We need 3 spectra taken along the disk MAJOR AXIS direction of each sample galaxy, one passing through the center and the other two offset by 0.25" on each side of the nucleus. The disk position angle is known by means of ground based imaging and kinematic measurements. STIS acquisition images will be also used to derive the disk geometrical parameters in the nuclear regions. For this reason we need a 40 seconds initial acquisition frame. We need a 4 orbits visit in order to collect the data for each sample galaxy. Our observing strategy is the following. 1) In the first orbit we will spend 6 minutes for guide star acquisition, 8 minutes for target acquisition and 5 minutes for first science spectrum preparation. Then we take two 16 minute exposures on the galaxy nucleus (1 minute overhead between them). 2) In the second orbit we will spend 5 minutes for GS re-acquisition, 1.5 minute for ``automatic wavecal'' exposure and we take a 14 minute frame (again on the galaxy nucleus). At this point we offset the telescope parallel to the major axis by +0.25'' and we take two 14 minute exposures (1 minute overhead between them). 3) The third orbit will be similar to the second one with the only difference that, after the first two 14 minute exposures on the +0.25'' offset position, we will offset the telescope to the -0.25'' offset position and take a 14 minutes exposure. 4) In the forth and last orbit we take 3x14 minutes exposures in the -0.25'' offset position.
