Abstract The flow velocity of extragalactic jets is a crucial missing parameter in our understanding of these objects. We would like to build on our successful HST proper motion measurements in M87, and propose similar measurements in four other optical jets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9069( 6) - 03/12/03 12:30 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our strategy is simply to repeat, as closely as possible, the first epoch observations. The same filter will be used (to minimize effects of any spectral gradients), and the target will be placed on the same region of the PC1 detector and with the same orientation (to minimize effects of optical distortion). While the first epoch observations of 3C78, 3C264, and 3C346 were not dithered, we do plan to use small sub-pixel position dithers for the proposed images; this will greatly improve our ability to align the old and new images. We plan to use a 3-position dither, and repeat the pair of 140s images of the first epoch at each position. For 3C273 we will repeat the four-image dither sequence previously used; a few short exposures will be included which will avoid saturation of the QSO. Charge Transfer Efficiency problems in the CCDs have increased since the first epoch observations, but we expect that this will have minimal effects since the stellar light of the host galaxies provides a significant background level (or sky background in the case of 3C273). In any case, we will test for CTE effects by taking an extra image of each target, with the jet placed nearer the readout amplifier, so as to directly evaluate any CTE effects. Position changes of jet features will be measured via the same cross-correlation technique we used in M87. The bright galaxy nucleus, along with numerous stars in the image, provide accurate reference points. Typical displacements for a speed ~c are of order 0.1 PC pixel. Our experience with M87 shows there are no significant problems attaining this accuracy (also King, et al., 1998, ApJ 492, L37); and extended features with sharp brightness gradients can allow even higher accuracies. Jet speeds of 5c or even 10c would give larger displacements, accordingly.
