Abstract The rapid and accurate localization of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) promised by the launch of HETE-2 will revolutionize our ability to study these enigmatic but highly luminous objects. We propose a program of HST and Chandra observations to capitalize on this extraordinary opportunity. The association of GRBs to star-forming galaxies now appears strong, in part because of our successful HST-based observing programs. We propose new observations that will provide the most stringent tests yet performed of the hypothesis that GRBs are powered by the collapse of massive stars. We will use STIS CCD spectroscopy to detect broad atomic features of supernovae underlying GRB optical transients, at flux levels more than a factor of three fainter than SN 1998bw. We will use UV, optical, and X-ray spectroscopy to study the local ISM around the GRB, testing whether GRBs preferentially occur in molecular clouds. Our broadband late-time imaging will further test physical models of the relativistic blast wave that produces the bright GRB afterglow, and together with our early spectroscopy will provide unique insight into the relationship between the behavior of the afterglow and the environment of the burster. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9074( 20) - 03/26/03 11:30 - [ 3] Observations Description ------------------------ noindent Two Ultra-rapid UV TOOs with long-term follow-up We request 2 activations with less than a 48 hour turnaround, to allow us to observe GRBs in the UV and X-ray within approximately two days of outburst (the X-ray observations are described in a later section). We will only trigger on objects with |b| > 30^degrees and which are estimated to have V < 20 and L_X > 5 * 10^- 13 ergs/cm^2/s in the 2-10 keV range at 24 hours after outburst.. Six orbits will be used in the first visit of each activation. The better part of one orbit will be used for set-up and calibration. In the remaining five orbits we will obtain NUV prism spectra as well as G430L CCD spectroscopy to allow us to study the UV spectrum of the object down to the limit of ground-based spectroscopy. A short G430L spectrum will allow us to obtain the necessary optical information for our science in case a contemporaneous ground-based observation is unavailable, as might easily occur given the requirements of available instrumentation, suitable observatory longitude, moon phase, and above all, weather. Because our observation will require interruption of the normal schedule it should be possible to obtain 6 SAA-free orbits; if only 5 can be found, we will accept the small resulting loss of signal-to-noise. These observations will then be followed by several visits back to the target over the the next year to obtain UV and optical photometry of the OT and its host. A total of 14 orbits will be used. The total requested time per burst is 35 orbits, of which 15 are overhead for the ultra-rapid response. noindent Two Rapid UV TOOs with long-term follow-up We request 2 activations with less than a 5-day turnaround, to allow us to obtain UV spectra of two bright GRB bursts (V < 19 at day 1) with |b| > 30^degrees. A total of 14 orbits will be used. beginfigure centerline file=grb_fin.eps, angle=-90, width=5.0 in caption\sf In the top frame we show a simulated 6-orbit STIS spectrum of SN1999as, a typical Type Ic ( i.e. a magnitude fainter than 1998bw), superposed at the redshift and the position of GRB 990712 on its host galaxy (see Fig. reff:990712), where we have assumed an Sc for the host spectrum. The characteristic supernova spectrum is easily detected. Below we show simulated Keck spectra of the same supernova superposed on an Sb or Sc (again with the magnitude of the host of 990712). We have assumed three hours of integration on Keck. The supernova features are washed out by the galaxy's light. Unfortunately, we do not know a priori either the type of the host galaxy or indeed the SN that might be associated with a GRB. Several further half-nights of later Keck time the next year would therefore be required to do a galaxy subtraction to the level immediately performed by STIS. In contrast, the difference between simulated HST spectra with an underlying Sc or Sb is so small that it is not worth the space to display. vspace- 0.15in endfigure 9074( 20) - 03/26/03 11:30 - [ 4] noindent Three STIS/CCD Spectroscopic TOOs with long-term follow-up -- 3 week turnaround We request three activations with three weeks turnaround to allow us to perform STIS/CCD spectroscopy on the OT to search for the spectral signature of a supernova near maximum in the light- curve. Requests will only be activated after a redshift of z < 0.9 has been spectroscopically determined. Between 6 and 10 orbits of spectroscopy will be taken, depending on the redshift. Because we can use a 0arcs2 slit (as opposed to a 0arcs75 slit at Keck), only a small fraction of the galaxy's light contaminates the spectrum (typically we expect less than one-fifth of the galaxy light to lie under the region of the spectrum extracted -- based on our STIS observations of the hosts, we expect the value to range between 1/3 in the worst case to about 1/25 in the best). As a result of this (and the fact that we have essentially no sky contamination) we are sensitive to supernovae with R <~ 24.5. About eight more orbits of follow-up WFPC2 and STIS imaging will be taken to follow the late- time light curve. However, because we expect one to two of these bursts to overlap with our fast follow-up, we do not need to ask for all of the orbits for the follow-up here. We ask that we be allotted 14 orbits per activation. noindent Three Short-Burst TOOs -- 3 week turnaround We request three TOOs to follow up on short bursts which may be identified by ground-based observations. HST played a key role in the early characterization of the long- term light- curve behavior of long GRBs. We hope it will play the same role here. Observations a few weeks after burst will be used to extend a ground-based light curve. Later observations (months to a year from the start of the TOO) will be used to determine whether a galaxy underlies the GRB. We should be sensitive to hosts down to V ~ 28. As this is an exploratory program, a single filter, 50CCD, will be used to trade color sensitivity for depth. In the event HETE-2 fails on launch, GRB astronomy will be constrained for several years by the low detection and localization rates of SAX and the IPN. The science program proposed could be carried out at a reduced pace using non- HETE triggers. Were the Italian government to fully support SAX in the event of the loss of HETE-2, we would expect to have sufficient bursts to follow-up one-half to all of the rapid TOOs and one or two of the SNe spectroscopic searches. There is little likelihood that we would be able to follow-up on short bursts, unless the triggering conditions of SAX are changed. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Please see the Description of the Observations vspace-0.1in bf Chandra request: 50 kiloseconds, 2 GRBs We request two rapid response Chandra observations of GRBs each one to take place within twelve hours of the Ultra-rapid UV HST TOOs we have requested. Only with the combination of HST's ultraviolet and Chandra's X-ray sensitivity can we confirm the tentative evidence that optically bright GRBs are in fact encased in molecular clouds. Rapid response is required because the X-ray flux of a GRB typically falls as t^-1.3, and always falls faster than t^-1. Thus the integration time required for a given observation grows as t^2.6 (and thus can rapidly becomer longer than the time since the burst.). Nonetheless, we calculate we can obtain an ~ 8 Sigma measurement of the column density of a burst with half the X- ray fluence of GRB 970228 -- the first, and a fairly bright, Beppo-Sax burst using 25ks of integration per burst. We will, at the same time, obtain a ~ 10 Sigma measurement of the energy index of the X-ray photons. Several such bursts should be localized and optically identified during the course of a year of operation of HETE. Within a 9074( 20) - 03/26/03 11:30 - [ 5] week of the proposal's due date we were informed that it will be recommended to the TAC that there be a limit of only one rapid Chandra response in this HST Cycle. While we would certainly prefer a single activation to none, we strongly urge the TAC to consider our proposal for two activations. The science we propose can only by done by the joint use of Chandra and HST. If the HST TAC can only apportion a sliver of Chandra time, and conversely the Chandra TAC only apportions a smidgen of HST time, important, exciting multi- wavelength science, such as we propose here, will be severely restricted.
