Abstract In recent years HST has played a major role in establishing the close link between black-hole mass and spheroid mass in both quiescent and active galaxies in the local universe. Consequently black-hole and spheroid formation/growth are now viewed as intimately related processes, and establishing the mass of quasar host galaxies as a function of redshift is now seen as a key measurement in observational cosmology (eg Kauffmann & Haehnelt 2000). From our Cycle 7 NICMOS program we have derived the best estimate to date of the mass evolution of the hosts of both radio-quiet and radio- loud quasars out to z ~eq 2. Under the assumption of passive stellar-population evolution our results are consistent with the black-hole/spheroid population being unchanged out to z ~eq 2. However, the crucial assumption of passive evolution needs to be tested, because discovery of any substantial star-formation activity would yield a reduction in luminosity-estimated host masses at z ~eq 1 - 2, potentially bringing our results into line with the order-of-magnitude mass reduction predicted by the hierarchical models of Kauffmann & Haenhelt (2000). We thus propose WFPC2 imaging of our luminosity-matched quasar sub-samples at z ~eq 1 and z ~eq 2 which, when coupled with our NICMOS data, will yield the first reliable rest-frame U-V colours for high-z quasar hosts, and hence the first unbiased measurement of host- galaxy masses out to z ~eq 2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9085( 3) - 03/21/01 09:47 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Filter choice: Our Cycle 7 NICMOS observations of these two quasar samples were carefully designed to sample the rest- frame V-band continuum of the object at each redshift, avoiding the strong emission lines [OIII]Lambda5007 and HAlpha. At z~eq1 this entailed using the F110M (~eq J) filter, whilst at z~eq2 the appropriate filter was F165M (~eq H). We will repeat this successful strategy in the current program, this time targeting the objects' rest-frame near- ultraviolet continuum, in the region ~2300Angstrom - 3400Angstrom (which also neatly avoids strong emission lines such as [OII]Lambda3727). For the z~eq1 sample this requires the F606W (`Wide-V') filter, whilst for z~eq2 we require F814W (I). Required sensitivities: To be of use, our observations must be sufficiently sensitive to derive the rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity of the host galaxy under the null hypothesis of passive stellar evolution. If this hypothesis is wrong, then the host will simply be detected more easily. For example, if the host is actively forming a substantial fraction (~eq 10%) of its stars it will in fact be 2.5 magnitudes brighter in the near-UV. Assuming a power-law spectrum for the quasar of the form f(Nu) propto nu^-0.2, we expect the nuclear luminosity to increase by a factor of ~10 from rest-frame V to the near-UV. In contrast, under our null hypothesis of passive stellar evolution, the luminosity of the host will hardly change. This means that the quasar:host ratio could be up to an order of magnitude larger at lambda_rest = 2800Angstrom than was found in our NICMOS observations. This increase is partially offset by the factor of ~2 decrease in the FWHM of the PSF from NICMOS to WFPC2 and the large throughput of the two wide WFPC2 filters, but it still means that we must aim to approximately double our sensitivity to the extended galaxy light in order to determine the form of the luminosity profile out to the same radius achieved with NICMOS. This factor of 2 increase in S/N will help to ensure that the uncertainty in the derived host- galaxy colours is dominated by the existing ~eq 0.3 mag. errors in NICMOS-derived near-infrared magnitudes. Our 1- orbit F110M (J-band) observations of the z ~eq 1 sample reached a 3-sigma suface brightness sensitivity limit of 19.5 mag. arcsec^-2 per 0.043 arcsec pixel. By azimuthal averaging over ~eq 100 pixels in a 1-pixel wide annulus at a radius ~eq 0.8 arcsec, the luminosity profile of the galaxy can be followed reliably down to a surface-brightness limit of mu_J ~eq 22 mag. arcsec^-2. The corresponding figures from our 4-orbit F165M (H-band) observations of the z ~eq 2 sample are mu_H ~eq 18.75 and 21.25 mag. arcsec^-2 respectively. The predicted F606W-J colour of a passively evolving stellar population at z ~eq 1 is 4 magnitudes (eg Zepf 1997), while the predicted F814W-H colour of the (somewhat bluer) passively evolved population at z ~eq 2 is also in fact 4 magnitudes (the quasar nucleus is expected to have F606W-J and F814W-H colours of 1.5 magnitudes). In order to match the quality of the NICMOS results we must therefore aim to follow the rest-frame UV luminosity profile of the hosts out to Mu_V ~eq 26 and Mu_I ~eq 25.25 at the ~eq 6-Sigma level. Undoing the annular binning, and given the larger 0.1-arcsec pixels of the WF detectors, means that these requirements convert to a 6-Sigma sensitivity limits per WF pixel at surface-brightness levels of Mu_V ~eq 23.75 mag. arcsec^-2 and Mu_I ~eq 23 mag. arcsec^-2. Requested Integration Times: Using the on-line WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator, to reach these sensitivity limits requires that we observe each of the 9 z ~eq 1 quasars for 2 orbits through the F606W filter, and each of the 9 z ~eq 2 quasars for 4 orbits through the F814W filter. Point Spread Functions: Experience from our previous WFPC2 & NICMOS imaging studies of quasar hosts (GO -6776 & GO-7447) has demonstrated that it is essential to obtain deep, high- dynamic range stellar PSFs through each filter in order to accurately characterize the critical outer regions of the quasar point spread function. Synthetic PSFs, whilst an excellent match to the inner ~1 arcsec, fail to adequately reproduce the complex and variable outer structure of the PSF wings. Archive PSFs are rarely precisely centred on the same region of the detector as the target quasars (thus changing the configuration of the outer region of the PSF), and do not always have the requisite dynamic range. In any case the form of the WFPC2 PSF changes systematically with time and so measurements made as close to the epoch of the observations as possible are highly desirable. We therefore adopt the same highly-successful strategy as used in our previous HST programs, and devote an orbit to obtaining high-dynamic range stellar PSFs through each of our two chosen filters. The star which we have selected has a spectral shape over the wavelengths of interest which is very similar to that of a typical quasar, thus ensuring the best possible match to the PSFs of our targets. Image analysis: For the analysis of our data from Cycles 6 & 7 we have already developed a 2-D modelling algorithm, optimized for use with WFPC2 & NICMOS images (see McLure, Dunlop & Kukula, 2000, astro-ph/9912044). The algorithm uses chi^2-minimization to find the best-fitting quasar+galaxy combination, using a deep stellar image to accurately reproduce the outer regions of the PSF. This method has proved to be extremely robust and can reclaim model host galaxy parameters to within accuracies of < 5%.
