Abstract We propose to constrain the origin of spiral galaxy halos by studying stellar populations near the tip of the red giant branch. This will be the first systematic study of this population in external galaxies and will quadruple the sample of normal spiral galaxies for which the halo metallicity distribution function is measured. This larger sample will permit us to study the relationship between the bulge, disk, and halo components and between halos and globular systems. Such correlations will in turn provide indications as to whether the halo, bulge, and globular cluster systems built up nearly simultaneously in the early universe or were accreted over time through different kinds of merging events. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9086( 4) - 05/24/01 06:33 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The galaxies will be observed with the F606W and F814W filters. The color response of the F606W filter is well calibrated and the additional sensitivity outweighs the slight advantage in absolute calibration provided by the F555W filter. Exposure times are set to reach S/N = 5 in the WF camera for an absolute magnitude M_I = -1 (for galaxies with (m-M)_0 < 27) or M_I = -2 (for the more distant portion of the sample). Distance moduli for galaxies in the sample are shown in Table 1. The F606W exposure time is set to reach S/N = 5 for a typical RGB color V-I = 1 at the I magnitude limit. S/N will be slightly higher on the PC. Images will be dithered by small amounts to control for hot pixels and improve resolution. The thorniest issue in planning the observations is trying to ensure that the fields observed have a high enough stellar density to get a good CMD, but are not so crowded that the photometry becomes unreliable. For a distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 28, a surface brightness Mu_V = 27 provides roughly 3900 stars or 490 pixels per star above 5Sigma, sufficiently sparse for reliable photometry. Fig. 1 shows the number of stars vs. surface brightness for Fe/H = - 1.7. Even for extremely low surface brightness halos, we should have a sufficient number of stars to determine whether or not a halo exists, to depths well beyond what is possible with conventional surface photometry. We will place the WFPC2 field of view at least 5 kpc off the disk along the minor axis. Where existing surface photometry permits, we will adjust the pointing position to ensure that star densities remain low enough (more than 100 pixels per star) that crowding will not be a problem. Star-galaxy separation is only a minor issue with HST resolution. Even with fairly lax stellarity criteria, in the HDF-N and HDF-S, respectively, there are only 28 and 72 stars with colors V-I > 0.5 brighter than our deepest limit I = 27.3. Harris et al. (1999) observed the peculiar E/S0 galaxy NGC5128 with the same configuration as we are proposing. At the same distance modulus, our limiting magnitude would be 0.3 mag brighter, which is still faint enough to accomplish our goals. The Harris et al. (1999) photometric errors agree with our estimates from simulations and from the WFPC-2 exposure-time calculator. To demonstrate the sensitivity of our proposed observations to metallicity, we have have simulated images for two models, one with a pure population of RGB stars along a 12 Gyr Fe/H = -1.7 isochrone, and one along a Fe/H = -0.7 isochrone. The simulated images were created using TinyTim model PSFs and measured using DAOPHOT. Such simulations faithfully portray the effects of photometric errors and crowding. The two models are clearly distinguishable at the S/N we are requesting. The resulting CMDs are shown in Fig 2. Of course the true distribution is likely to be a mixture of metallicities, which will be recognizable from the scatter in V-I at fixed I magnitude, and quantifiable via Monte Carlo simulations and likelihood tests. We request coordinated parallels with STIS. The field of view will end up either on the optical disk of the target galaxy, or somewhere in the halo. In either case the data are relevant to the science goals of this proposal. These will be taken in imaging mode with the 50CCD clear aperture and the F28X50LP filter. While the STScI archival pure parallel program (7912) will in principle schedule this exact configuration on these nearby galaxies, it can be done much more efficiently as coordinated parallels. Isochrones of fixed age and metallicity were populated in a Monte-Carlo fashion and simulated WFPC-2 iamges were constructed with the appropriate amounts of sky background and read noise. Stars down to the main sequence turnoff were included in the image, to ensure that crowding effects were properly modeled. Magnitudes in the image were measured using DAOPHOT. The left panel 0.05in parbox6.75in shows a stellar population with Fe/H=-0.7; the right panel shows a population with Fe/H=-1.7. The measured points are overlaid on the theoretical isochrones (Bertelli et al.\ 1994). The simulations demonstrate the clear differences that would be apparent between the two metallicities at our proposed S/N and star number density. The dotted lines show the nominal 5Sigma limits for point sources in the images. For this figure, magnitudes are on the instrumental STMAG system (I_STMAG ~ I_Cousins + 1.3).
