Abstract The mass-luminosity relation is well determined for intermediate-mass stars, and on- going HST observations are extending the relationship to stars of very low mass. Here we propose to obtain similar, fundamental data on the highest mass stars, where physical complications (mass-loss, mixing) make such studies a necessary check on the stellar models. Empirical checks are particularly important given the factor- of -two ``mass discrepancy" that exists in the masses inferred from stellar atmospheres, and those computed from stellar interiors. We have selected 7 nearby, early-type stars with established velocity variations characteristic of long-period binaries. We will attempt to resolve these systems using the FGS. The separations, combined with double-lined spectroscopic orbit solutions, will provide unambiguous mass determinations. Success for even one system will allow us to anchor the high- luminosity end of the mass-luminosity relationship, and resolve the mass discrepancy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9097( 2) - 02/05/01 13:47 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to use FGS1 in TRANS mode in an effort to spatially resolve binaries in our sample and to measure the angular separation of their components with 1- mas precision with the use of TRANS-data analysis software developed and used extensively at the Lowell Observatory. Such analyses will also yield magnitude differences of binary components with a precision of ~0.1 mag. The single observation proposed for each target will consist of about 60 consecutive TRANS scans through filter F583W for all except the brightest of the targets (HD 207538, V=7.3), for which F5ND will be used. Co-addition of cross-correlated scans will yield a S/N 100 for the latter observation, and greater for all other targets. Single-star TRANS-scans from the FGS calibration data base will serve as templates in our analysis.
