Abstract Most planetary nebulae (PNs) show bipolar morphology, in striking contrast to the largely round shapes of the circumstellar envelopes of the AGB stars from which they evolve. Several lines of evidence, including high spatial- resolution imaging with HST, suggest that high-velocity collimated outflows occuring during the transition from AGB to the PN phase -- the preplanetary nebula (PPN) phase -- are significant agents for imposing bipolarity on the circumstellar environment. Unfortunately, kinematic data at a comparable spatial resolution has been lacking, limiting our understanding of the physical mechanisms responsible for the bipolarity. We have therefore begun a multiwavelength program, including interferometric spectral-line imaging in the radio and HST imaging, to study PPNs in detail. We find, for two bipolar PPN, that the spatio-kinematic distribution of the OH masers relative to the HST optical structure is consistent with the hypothesis that the optical lobes result from a fast outflow interacting with the slow, dense AGB wind, producing an increasing radial velocity from the equator to the poles. We propose imaging of 17 PPNs with WFPC2 for comparison with high-resolution spectral-line images (being obtained with VLA/MERLIN/ATCA), enabling us to test this hypothesis, and to understand the fast outflow and how its hydrodynamical interaction with the AGB wind produces a bipolar nebula. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9101( 8) - 01/25/02 09:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will image our sample of 17 PPNs in the F555W, F814W, and F656N (for HAlpha) filters using the Planetary Camera. Our analysis of several PPNs (Sahai et al. 1999a, b, c) shows that (1) in most PPNs, the nebular brightness shows a very large dynamic range (>~ 10^4), and (2) the faintest interesting morphological features such as the extremities of the polar lobes have surface brightnesses typically ~ 0.1-1 mJy/arcsec^2. The HAlpha imaging is required because the central stars of these objects often show HAlpha line emission, which is then scattered off the surrounding nebular dust (we have observed this phenomena in the PPN, Roberts 22 Sahai et al. 1999a and Hen 401 Sahai et al. 1999c). The HAlpha image will enable us to determine any contamination of the continuum images. Very weak extended HAlpha emission from shocked gas may also be present (Sahai et al. 1999c), but this is unlikely to have any significant effect on the continuum images. All 17 objects in our source list most likely have visibly faint central stars (since no visual magnitudes are listed in SIMBAD databse). Using the WFPC2 exposure time calculator, we estimate that with 10 minutes exposures, amounting to about 45 minutes with overheads, will be sufficient to obtain high-quality images (S/N>10-20 in regions of intermediate brightness) in these 3 filters for all sources. Short and long exposures will be used to minimise the effect of scattered/diffracted light in telescope optics in objects with relatively bright central stars. Equal exposure pairs to remove cosmic-rays will be used to improve the quality of the long exposure images. Because of the great archival value of the images we expect to obtain, we will release the images very soon after they are acquired to the general community. We only request a 6- month proprietary period for the data, which is required to (1) verify the quality of the images and carry out necessary calibration and data reduction tasks, (2) make a preliminary assesment of the scientific potential of the images including comparison with kinematic data from radio observations of OH maser emission, and (3) publish analysis of particularly interesting objects. centerline From Data to Science Every member of the proposal team has long been involved with research on AGB stars, post- AGB stars, and planetary nebulae. Several of us (AZ, MM, MC) have carried out extensive interferometric observations of masers in such systems for well over a decade. RS has published a large number of studies of planetary and preplanetary nebulae with WFPC2, in some cases with other members of our team. MM has conducted a variety of theoretical studies of the radiative transfer and hydrodynamics of these systems. Data calibration/reduction of the images is straightforward. Many of the necessary tools, e.g. for analysis of scattered light using simple and detailed numerical models, registration/overlay/display of the HST and radio spectral- line images, using the HST/radio data to constrain detailed models of the 3-D spatio-kinematic structure, have already been developed and used. Consequently, all the expertise necessary to maximize the scientific return from the proposed observations is represented on the team.
