Abstract We have discovered an extended, highly-collimated, bipolar jet in He2-90, an object long classified as a planetary nebula (PN). The discovery images (obtained with WFPC2/HST) show that the morphology of He2-90 does not look like that of any known PN, but resembles that of a classical young stellar object (YSO). This appears to be a unique object. We will determine the speed of the jet (only slightly inclined to the sky plane) through proper motion observations of the knots in the jet: a 2nd- epoch WFPC2 H-alphapha image will be obtained for comparison with the Sep99 discovery image. It is crucial to observe the velocity field of the flow at the highest spatial- resolution, as close as possible to the origin of the jet in order to constrain theories for how the jet is driven, and the nature of the central object. We propose to do this by mapping the jet near the central source using the long-slit, medium resolution mode of STIS. We also propose supplemental observations: low resolution STIS spectra for obtaining nebular diagnostics, coupled with narrow-band imaging with WFPC2 in emission lines such as NII, OI and OIII and continuum filters for mapping excitation variations in the nebula and jet and the extinction in the central dense dusty disk region. Coordinated Chandra X-ray observations (with ACIS-I) will be made to check the association of an EGRET >~mma- ray source which lies in the direction of He2-90. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9102( 4) - 10/04/02 09:23 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The declination of He2-90 (-61 deg) puts it in the middle of the CVZ zone. Hence we will observe He2-90 in the CVZ mode, thereby maximising the observing efficiency., noindent WFPC2 imaging: All images will be obtained with the Planetary Camera. We want to obtain a second epoch HAlpha image with WFPC2 through the F656N filter to look for proper motion. This image should be at least as deep, if not deeper than the 18 min snapshot exposure (Fig. 1) since this is the line which will be used for the velocity mapping. We propose a 30 min exposure in this line. The other lines are rather weaker; we will use exposures of about 40, 40, and 75 minutes to obtain reasonably high S/N ratios for NII (F658N), OIII (F502N), and HBeta (F487N), respectively (e.g. 16, 12, 9 in the brightest knots a, a'). We have used the ratios of the ground-based fluxes of the NIILambda6584, OIIILambda5007, and HBeta lines, to that of HAlpha, to estimate the above. The ratio of the low-excitation NII line to the relatively higher-excitation OIII line will allow us to map the excitation. H Beta\ and H-alphapha\ will be combined to produce a reddening map. A 10-minute exposure in the ``line- free" continuum filter F547M will enable us to estimate the amount of continuum in the narrow-band filters. Determination of the inclination angle, based on modelling the ratio of the observed lobe intensities is an important component of our study -- the modelling requires us to know the phase function for the scattering, which depends on the dust properties, in particular the average size and size distribution of the dust grains. For evolved stars, the dust grain properties are very likely different from the ISM, and probably also different from YSOs. So we will add continuum observations over a range of wavelengths in order to get a better handle on the dust properties. We propose imaging with F439W, F606W, and F814W using exposures of 15, 10 & 10-minutes; the emission-line imaging will enable us to subtract out the contribution due to nebular lines. The total exposure time for each filter will be split, as necessary, into short, intermediate and long intervals in order to correct for saturation effects. We thus need 3 CVZ orbits for the WFPC2 imaging. noindent STIS spectroscopy: We will map the kinematic structure by obtaining spectra of the strongest lines, HAlpha and NIILambda6585, with a resolution of ~50kms with the G750M grating. We will adopt a grating setting which uses the secondary tilt with central wavelength of 6581Angstrom, allowing us to cover the wavelength range 6295-6867Angstrom. Thus the important SIILambda6717, 6730, NIILambda6584, and OILambda6300 lines will be included in our bandpass, together with HAlpha. The HAlpha flux within a circle 0arcs36 in radius centered on the brighter lobe in Fig. 1 is 3.5times10^-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1, of which we estimate about 25\ be H-alphapha line emission from ground-based imaging in H-alphapha and a red filter centered at 0.6Mum. The line emission is a combination of the very wide line seen towards the central object, and narrower nebular emission. Costa et al.\ (1993) find that the total flux in the wide component is about 5times10^-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1, spread over a velocity range of 2100kms\ (~45 Angstrom); assuming that this component arises in a region of the size of the bright core (~0arcs2), we obtain an average flux of 3times10^-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 arcsec^-2. We have determined exposure times by requiring a good S/N detection of the knots e, e' in the jet of He2-90 (see Fig. 1a), enabling us to measure the radial velocities of several knots and thus look for a radial gradient in the speed along the jet. The HAlpha intensity of these knots is 7.5times10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2. Since the (local) velocity dispersion (~10--20kms) is likely to be less than our resolution of 50kms , we expect the average knot HAlpha line intensity to be 7.5times10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 arcsec^-2. Using the continuum level determined above, and the STIS Exposure Calculator, we find that S/N=15 for an exposure time of 40 minutes. We have set the gain to be 4e^- /ADU, because we need to avoid saturation due to the bright central sources 9102( 4) - 10/04/02 09:23 - [ 3] (whose spatial size is not known, lending uncertainty to our brightness estimates). Because of the twin requirements of obtaining good S/N in the fainter regions of the jet, and avoiding saturation due to the bright central sources, we will obtain 8*300 sec (cosmic- ray split) exposures, or a total integration time of 40 minutes per slit position. Our most important goal is to fully map the velocity field in the central region, i.e. between the central source and the first knots. With the 0.1 arcsec slit this will require 7 adjacent slit positions (i.e.\ stepping with PATTERN=PERP-TO-SLIT) aligned along the jets. We also want to obtain low resolution spectra using G430L (covering the wavelength range 2900-5700Angstrom) and G750L (covering 5236- 10266Angstrom). These will yield little velocity information, but will enable us to measure the fluxes of a large number of emission lines, and the shape of the continuum, providing diagnostics of the physical conditions in the jet and surrounding nebula. We propose using the 0.2 arcsec slit at 3 positions to cover essentially the same regions as with G750M. Exposures of 10 min will provide S/N >= 10 for lines such as HBeta and O IIILambda5007. With overheads, we will thus need a total of 5 CVZ orbits (the first exposure will allow acquisition and peak-up, so will be shorter) for the velocity mapping and the low reolution spectroscopy. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The declination of He2-90 (-61 deg) puts it in the middle of the CVZ zone. Hence we will observe He2-90 in the CVZ mode, thereby maximising the observing efficiency., We request observations of He2-90 with Chandra ACIS-I to investigate the >~mma-ray source 3EG J1308-6112 which we have found to lie in the direction of He2-90. He2-90 is located less than 9' from the nominal center of the error ellipse for the position of the so far unidentified >~mma-ray source 3EG J1308-6112. While the radius of the 95\ ellipse is ~40', no other X- ray source has been matched with 3EG J1308-6112. He2-90 is thus a good candidate for the optical counterpart of the >~mma-ray source The region around He2-90 was surveyed twice during the ROSAT All Sky Survey with exposure times around 600s and 900s; no source was detected. However since ROSAT was only sensitive to soft X-rays (0.1--2.4 keV), which are relatively easily absorbed by the dense material in a surrounding disk (as seen in He2-90), the ROSAT non- detection does not rule out the presence of an X-ray source in He2-90. For example, a visual extinction A_ V = 20^ m corresponds to a hydrogen column density of N_ H = 4.5times10^22cm^-2, which effectively blocks out the ``soft'' (<=2 keV) X-rays. We propose to observe He2-90 with Chandra and ACIS-I. ACIS-I will provide us both with a higher sensitivity and better energy resolution than HRC. We have used version 3.0 of the Portable, Interactive, Multi-Mission Sumulator (PIMMS) to compute expected count rates for CHANDRA/ACIS-I. Assuming a ROSAT countrate of <=0.001 counts s^-1 (cps), a spectral index of 2, and N_ H = 4.5times10^22cm^-2 yields an ACIS-I countrate of 0.04 cps. Pile-up would be of order of 5\ time of 3.3s. Thus a 10 ksec exposure would result in ~400 counts, which should be sufficient to determine the temperature and to derive. a better estimate on the hydrogen column density. Using the same set of parameters, but assuming a still higher visual extinction of A_ V = 30^ m (corresponding to 6.6times10^22cm^-2) would result in an ACIS-I countrate of ~0.1 cps. Pile-up would be of order of 13\ time of 3.3s, yielding ~800 counts. Assuming the initial set of parameters, but a spectral index of 1.5 or 2.5 would yield 500 counts and 260 counts in a 10 ksec exposure, respectively. Thus a 10 ksec exposure with CHANDRA/ACIS-I should be sufficient to detect He2-90, to get an estimate on the temperature of the X-ray spectrum, its X-ray luminosity and the column density, and to test the hypothesis that He2-90 might be the optical counterpart to the ``unidentified'' EGRET >~mma-ray source 3EG J1308-6112. The X-ray spectral index will allow us to set constraints on the 9102( 4) - 10/04/02 09:23 - [ 4] nature of the X-ray source, and thus indirectly diagnose the nature of the accreting companion as a white dwarf or a neutron star.
