Abstract Edge-on, optically thick circumstellar disks have been imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope in association with several nearby young stars. In these systems, the central star is occulted from direct view, large PSF artifacts are absent, and the disk reflected light is clearly seen. It is for these objects in nearby star-forming regions that HST has provided the best, highest resolution (7-10 AU) views to date of disks which may form planetary systems like our own. Comparison of edge-on disk images with scattered light models has allowed key structural parameters such as the disk outer radius, vertical scale height, radial density profile, total mass, and dust grain properties to be determined. To reveal the diversity of protoplanetary environments, it would be very valuable to identify and study additional examples of edge-on disks. The edge-on disks detected thus far share a signature characteristic: they are unusually faint in the near-infrared yet still optically visible. In a review of the literature, we have uncovered an additional eight optically visible young stars associated with nearby molecular clouds whose faintness in the near-IR suggests that they are edge-on disks seen entirely by scattered light. Three are sources of Herbig-Haro jets. We propose R and I band imaging of these eight objects, the faintest nearby T Tauri stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9103( 5) - 06/19/01 06:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All targets will be imaged on PC1 in the F675W and F814W filters. As these are faint targets, we baseline a CR-SPLIT 1200 second exposure in F675W and a CR- SPLIT 800 second exposure in F814W. These exposure levels have proven to provide the required sensitivity in our prior studies of the disks and jets of HH 30 and Haro 6-5B. Herbig-Haro jets have several prominent emission lines which fall in the F675W filter, and little or no emisison in the F814W filter. Thus the comparison of the two images will allow us to discriminate between emission and reflection nebulosity. There will be a single one-orbit visit for each target. Since the sources are associated with dark molecular clouds, it may be necessary to make the observations with only a single guide star.
