Abstract Searches for supermassive black holes in galaxy centers have led to the discoveries that (1) most or all hot galaxies contain massive dark objects at their centers, presumably black holes; (2) there is a tight correlation between the black-hole mass and the luminosity-weighted velocity dispersion of the hot component of the galaxy. This remarkable relationship suggests a strong link between black-hole formation, AGN activity, and galaxy formation, and once it is understood this link should advance our understanding of all three processes. Guided by the \mbh-Sigma relation, we will search for the most massive black holes in galaxies within ~100 Mpc. Our results should (1) explore the nature of the \mbh-Sigma relation for the most luminous galaxies and the most massive black holes; (2) identify the local remnants of the brightest quasars, which should have larger black-hole masses than any yet detected; (3) test whether black-hole masses depend on the nature of the central region of the host galaxy (core or power-law). High-mass black holes are difficult to detect, and thus have traditionally been under- represented in HST surveys; however, in the past decade our group has used HST photometry and spectroscopy to investigate the central regions of over 15 galaxies, and we have well- honed observational and theoretical tools for this task. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9106( 8) - 06/20/01 14:27 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Sample Selection The sample selection strategy is straightforward in principle: find the galaxies with the largest velocity dispersion that have a detectable BH. We start with the Tully Nearby Galaxy Catalogue citetully and find velocity dispersions for galaxies by positionally correlating them with Hypercat citeprugniel which includes previously published, large catalogs of dispersions citeMcEl, Whit. We then added the 7-Samurai citesamurai sample and the Great Attractor sample citega, and all of the galaxies studied by us in citefab4. These three sets of galaxies contain measurements of velocity dispersions and include the brightest early type galaxies to d ~ 100 -/+c. This step yielded ~1000 candidate targets. We then culled this list for all galaxies with Sigma > 350kms and for a predicted BH sphere of influence greater than 0." 1 (there were 10). The second step was accomplished by computing the ``minimum detectable mass'' via beginequation M_min = Sigma^2 / G 0."1 / 206, 000 d endequation and rejecting the candidate if the minimum mass did not reach the lower \mbh-Sigma relation in Figure 1. After removing M87 and one galaxy in Baum's program we had the 4 galaxies shown in table 1. Chandra X-ray observations exist. ^c N1961 = Arp184. This galaxy fails the Sigma > 350kms criterion, but it is an exceptionally large spiral (SAB(rs)c, LINER) and the most luminous galaxy in the RSA catalog. ^d N4061 is E1pec. It is also a ``Narrow-Angle Tailed" radio galaxy in the NGC 4065 group. The HYPERCAT ``average'' dispersion is given; the actual measurement citewhite is 477pm27. This galaxy is the dispersion champion in the published literature and must be studied at all costs for the purposes of this proposal. ^e N4649 = M60. vspace.4cm After this procedure, we added one galaxy, NGC 1961. Its dispersion is below our cut, but it appears to be the most luminous galaxy in the RSA catalog citesandage and is possibly the largest spiral in the nearby universe. It has been studied from the ground citerubin and has rapid, possibly unresolved rotation in HAlpha. Basing exposure estimates on emission line fluxes from citehf1, we propose 2 orbits of spectroscopy and 2 of imaging for this object, using the same strategy (1 major axis and 2 flanking exposures) we are using in cycle 9. vspace0.5cm Stellar Kinematics of `Core' Ellipticals We are attempting to measure stellar dynamics in large velocity dispersion galaxies with core surface brightness profiles. Both attributes make the measurement of absorption line shapes difficult; the large central dispersions wash out the lines and the low surface brightness decreases the continuum. Observations of NGC 4649 show that the Ca triplet can be observed in large ellipticals using STIS + the G750M grating, but at great expense. Fortunately, the Ca H+K region is ideal for kinematic measurements in large dispersion galaxies due to their large equivalent widths. This region historically has not been used. We have simulated our proposed method and shown that we can accurately measure velocity profiles through the 4th Gauss-Hermite moment. Template issues are not a problem as long as a range of templates is used in the analysis citekobul. We are including 3 giant stars as templates to be observed with the Ca H+K setup. We have run extensive simulations to determine the required S/N in the H+K region using the G430L grating on STIS to measure the dispersion accurately. Above 350 km/s, the H+K region produces a dispersion to better than 8\ 2.75Angstrom\ pixel (or S/N of 50 per STIS resolution element). Our experience in cycles 4, 5, and 7 shows that this precision will lead to 50\ While the Ca triplet is better at low dispersions, this is the better approach for large dispersion, low surface brightness galaxies. Each of our selected galaxies has a low central surface brightness between 15.9 and 16.3 V mag/arcsec^2. We will use the 52x0.2"\ slit. We will not use a peak-up in acquisition because our previous experience has shown that it is not necessary for placing the slit on core galaxy. Using the STIS exposure time calculator and our experience with STIS observations, we present the number of required orbits in Table 1. The use of the lower resolution grating permitted by the larger dispersions and stronger lines gains us a factor of about 2.5 in speed at fixed V surface brightness.
