Abstract The large number of collisions thought to have taken place in the primordial Kuiper belt suggests that many Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) could have suffered binary- forming collisions similar to that which formed the Pluto -- Charon binary. Detection of such KBO satellites would allow us to measure KBO masses, would help us to understand the past collisional environment of the Kuiper belt, and would give a context to the otherwise unique-seeming formation of the Pluto -- Charon binary. We propose a STIS CCD search for satellites around a large sample of KBOs for which we can obtain sufficient signal-to-noise and angular separation to robustly detect Charon-analog satellites. The time is right to invest in such a large survey: our preliminary HST search for satellites is just being completed and has demonstrated a highly successful observing strategy; the number of bright KBOs has now increased to the point where a statistically meaningful sample can be observed; and many studies of KBO properties and history will benefit greatly from having a concrete knowledge of KBO masses. We are performing complementary deep searches around each of these KBOs with Keck, but only HST resolution will allow us to probe the inner ~0.5 arcseconds where we expect collisionally formed satellites analogous to Charon to appear. We have carefully constructed a program optimized to detect any such very close satellites. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9110( 74) - 08/05/02 15:30 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Observations searching for KBO satellites must be carefully optimized to maximize the likelihood of success. After examining choices of observation type, instrument, and tracking strategies, we have concluded that the best method is to observe each object over two orbits as close as possible to the KBO stationary point and to use the bare STIS CCD to take short exposures without tracking the KBO. We find that this observation strategy is optimal for resolving close satellites. The strategy is not optimal for finding more distant (>1 arcsecond) faint satellites, but our deep Keck searches will explore that region of parameter space for all of our target objects. *GO vs. Snapshot observations.* Snapshot observations are an efficient use of the telescope; if possible we would prefer a large survey such as this to be performed in such a mode. Unfortunately, with a snapshot survey we lose control over the two most important aspects of the survey: the time of the observation (and therefore the angular velocity of the object) and the number of orbits used. To understand GO vs. snapshot sensitivity, we have compared single orbits of the Fitzsimmons data (which were obtained in a mode that would be ideal for a snapshot survey) with data from our own survey and concluded that an optimal snapshot survey would lose one full magnitude in sensitivity compared to the optimal GO survey. In addition to sensitivity loss, the single orbit of a snapshot would not allow time for the satellite to move significantly. For both of these reasons, we deem the snapshot approach inadequate. *Tracking vs. not tracking.* By tracking the KBO, we could maximize sensitivity by taking long exposures and avoiding the time and readout noise overhead associated with multiple short exposures. However, such a method would cause two potentially serious problems. First, trailed stars might intersect the KBO location, rendering an entire long exposure worthless. Second, all stars in the image will be smeared and therefore useless for PSF calibration. If, instead, we observe near the KBO stationary point (when typical motions are ~0.4 arcsec/hr) and obtain exposures short enough that the KBO moves no more than about 0.5 pixels (~3.75 minutes), then all of the data can be combined to make a precise map of the background field which can be accurately subtracted from the individual frames. Precise PSFs are readily obtained and these can be modeled to include the the small smear of the moving KBO. Such a method sacrifices sensitivity far from the object for increased sensitivity within a few tenths of an arcsecond. Again, we suspect that this region is where most KBO satellites are likely to be found, and we are performing a deep Keck survey for more distant satellites of all of these KBOs. *STIS vs. PC.* The PC has the smallest pixels, allowing the finest sampling of the PSF. However the STIS CCD pixels are only 10% larger, and the presence of Lyot stops inside STIS should reduce the wings of the PSF significantly compared to that of the PC. We have checked plots of encircled energies for all imaging setups and verified this expectation. *Observing strategy* From these considerations, we have constructed the following observing strategy. Each KBO will be observed at its stationary point, where spatial motions are the smallest (typically ~0.4 arcseconds/hour, depending on the orbital inclination). We will use the STIS bare CCD, filling an orbit with multiple short exposures which allow the object to move by no more than 0.5 pixels per exposure. The observation will then be repeated ~1 day later. The KBO will have moved a sufficient distance (~10 arcseconds) that the background at the previous location can be carefully measured and subtracted, ensuring no contamination. In addition, observations 1 day later will allow confirmation of any detected satellite and a first estimate of the orbital periods and therefore masses of the objects. It is vital that the return visit have the exact same pointing center and field orientation as the first visit. This will allow careful removal of the background stars. Once the first visit has been completed, the RA, DEC, and 9110( 74) - 08/05/02 15:30 - [ 3] rotation angle should be recorded and used on the subsequent visit. In addition, all observations should be tracked on the background stars, and not on the object, as explained in the "Tracking vs. not tracking" section. This procedure will probably require human intervention during the observations, as the HST software is not designed to image moving targets without tracking. Furthermore, the orbits of some of the objects will be improved in coming months. Therefore, all orbits should be updated before observations are made. This may require small changes in the observation timing, however, observation windows have been made as large as possible to minimize the number of possible temporal changes. The PI and CoI will inform STSCI of any such changes. Real Time Justification ----------------------- For best PSF determination and highest sensitivity, these KBOs must be observed when their motions are the smallest. Each KBO will have such a stationary point once approximately every six months. The observing window around each stationary point is approximately 1 week. Specific observing windows for each object have been included in this proposal.
