Abstract In Cycle 7 we successfully applied to carry out a high resolution UV spectroscopic survey of O-stars in the SMC. The primary aim of this program, GO-7437, is to construct a high quality spectral library at low metallicity in order to synthesize the UV spectra of high redshift star-forming galaxies and nearby starbursts. This program is almost completed and in the present proposal we ask to extend the survey to B-stars in the SMC. There are important reasons for doing so. Chief among these is that recent work, some of it prompted by GO-7437 results, indicates that B-stars are significant contributors to the observed UV spectrum of high redshift galaxies such as the important MS 1512-cB58. In the present survey we also propose to extend the wavelength coverage into the near-UV in order to cover the most distinguishing feature in B-star UV spectra, the Fe, iii multiplet between 1900 and 2000Angstrom . This feature is a key diagnostic of B-stars and an excellent discriminant against O- stars. The combined survey of O and B stars will constitute the definitive UV spectral library of massive stars at low metallicity and will offer powerful diagnostic capabilities in many other areas of astronomy, particularly in the area of massive star evolution and its dependence on metallicity and rotation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9116( 2) - 02/15/01 13:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Targets are chosen covering spectral types from B0 to B5 at luminosity classes I, II and III from the sources discussed above. We propose to observe each object with the E140M and E230M echelle gratings at primary central wavelength settings of 1425 and 1978Angstrom\ respectively, using the 0.2X0.2 arcsec aperture. Count rates for each object were estimated using the STIS exposure time calulator and using observed UV fluxes taken from previous IUE low resolution observations (which exist for all our targets). In some cases where the IUE fluxes were deemed to be unreliable we simply scaled observed fluxes from other well observed spectral analogues in the SMC. The exposure times were estimated such as to give a continuum s/n of 20 at each central wavelength, similar to the requirement on our O-star survey. The number of required orbits per object was then estimated by taking into account the usual overheads; 6 min for GS acquire, 6 min for target acquisition, 8 min overhead on science observation, 8 min for E140M/E230M change-over (where this occurs in the same visit -- brighter objects only), 5 min for GS re-acquisition and assuming that necessary wavecals can be hidden in occultation periods. For the fainter targets the orbit budget is dominated by the exposure time, and they also dominate the total orbit request for the proposal. As with our Cycle 7 proposal, the constraint on the s/n comes from the fact that the spectra will be used to derive reliable stellar and wind parameters for all stars in the library, and, very important, will allow us to correct for the presence of interstellar lines. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. However note that Lennon and Kudritzki are CoI and PI respectively of a Cycle 10 snapshot proposal to obtain lower resolution (G140L) spectra of a large sample of the most luminous B0--B3 supergiants in the LMC and SMC in order to obtain wind terminal velocities. While the primary scientific goals of both proposals are substantially different there is some overlap of targets. Should both proposals be approved we would undertake not to duplicate observations of targets discussed here with the snapshot program.
