Abstract We propose to obtain the most detailed view yet of Io's dynamic SO_2 / S_2 atmosphere, and the first spectroscopic observations of a Prometheus-type plume, to test models of plume and atmospheric chemistry and dynamics. We will use STIS on eight HST orbits, spread over four Io days, to obtain a spatial profile of S_2 and SO_2 gas abundance across a region of Io that includes a wide variety of terrain types and latitudes, centered on the Prometheus volcano. In addition, we will obtain two orbits of G140L wide-slit STIS data, which provides an image of Io in reflected Lyman-Alpha which we will compare to our SO_2 distribution data to test the hypothesis that Io's dark equatorial region in these images results from absorption of Lyman-Alpha by SO_2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9119( 45) - 12/05/01 10:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will spend eight orbits, in four sets of two orbits each, doing STIS long- slit spectroscopy of Io's disk with the G230L grating and the 52''x0.1'' slit. All orbits will target the Prometheus volcano, with Io central meridian longitude near 145, and will cover essentially the same swath of territory on Io, though the 12 degrees of Io rotation between the first and second orbit in each visit, and variations in Io central longitude between visits imposed by scheduling requirements, will cause some variation in the slit position at points remote from Prometheus. This slit orientation is close to the default orientation for observations taken away from opposition, and requires an off- nominal roll angle of only 10-15 degrees, well within limits for large solar elongations. Including overheads for guide-star acquisition; STIS diffuse acquisition of Io's disk; offset to Prometheus's position; and WAVECALS, we expect to have 30 minutes of integration time available on the first orbit of each visit, and a little more on the second orbit. We have conservatively assumed just 30 minutes integration per orbit in our S/N calculations, for a total of 240 minutes. We used the STIS ETC to determine S/N. Io's opposition V magnitude is 5.1, with a diameter of 1.2 arcsec and V albedo of 0.75. In the 2000 -- 3000 Angstrom\ wavelength range of interest its albedo is roughly 0.025 (Spencer and Schneider 1996, McGrath et al. 2000), so it is equivalent to a diffuse object with a G2V spectrum and brightness of 9 mag/arcsec^2. Estimate S/N from the ETC is 42 at 2100 Angstrom\ and 160 at 2950 Angstrom. We used count levels derived from the ETC with these input parameters to calculate count rates and thus noise levels at each wavelength, and added these to models of SO_2 transmission, convolved to the 6.6 A resolution of our slit/grating combination, to produce the synthetic spectra in Figure 1. From Figure 1 we conclude that at 0.1'' x 0.1'' spatial resolution we can measure SO_2 abundances down to 1.0 x 10^16 cm^-2, and S_2 abundances down to 5 x 10^14 cm^- 2. Better sensitivity will be possible by binning spatially along the slit. Our second observation is a two-orbit observation with the FUV-MAMA, G140L grating, and 52'' x 2'' slit. This slit is larger than Io, so produces multiple images of Io in each emission line, including Lyman-Alpha which is of interest here. These observations are identical to those done in previous HST Cycles (e.g., Roesler et al. 1998, Feldman et al. 1999), so we know that S/N is sufficient in 2 orbits. Two HST orbits will be dedicated to spectral FUV images of Io with the G140L, centering Io in the wide 52x2" slit, and using the FUVMAMA in time- tag mode. The aim is to image Io at H-Lya immediately before or after a pair of G230L spatially and spectroscopically resolved molecular SO2 component of the atmosphere. The comparative G140L and G230L observations will provide not only the much needed evidence of the interpretation of the Lya signal from Io as solar Lya absorbed by the SO2 atmosphere and reflected by the surface, but also will determine their relative effects. In particular, it will clarify once and for all, the ongoing controversy of whether the irregular spatial distribution of Lya signal at Io's mid- and high-latitudes is due to a highly patchy SO2 atmosphere or instead to a highly rarified SO2 atmosphere at these latitudes where the irregularities seen at Lya are due to irregular properties of the surface reflectance as seen at all other wavelengths on Io. In addition, to properly interpret SI emissions at 1814 and 1900 A potentially detectable in the G230L data, the G140L observations will readily image other SI and OI emissions at shorter wavelength. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Each (of the 2) G140L orbit must be contiguous to a different (of the 4) pair of G230L orbits. This scheduling constraint is needed because of the potential variability in the SO2 atmospheric abundance, and on the need to sample the same hemisphere of Io in both datasets for a direct comparison. The average of the G140L Lya data will then be comparable to 1/2 of the SO2 data rather than just 1/4. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9119( 45) - 12/05/01 10:13 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Solar System Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET NUMBER: 1 | TARGET NAME: IO-PROMETHEUS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET DESCRIPTION: SATELLITE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET POSITION LEVEL 1 | TARGET POSITION LEVEL 2 | STD=JUPITER | STD=IO | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET POSITION LEVEL 3 | WINDOWS | TYPE=PGRAPHIC,LONG=155,LAT=-2 | OLG OF IO BETWEEN 133 165, SEP OF IO- | PROMETHEUS JUPITER FROM EARTH GT 11", | RANGE IO EARTH LT 4.8, OLG OF JUPITER | BETWEEN 348 64 | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DATA | COMMENTS | V = 5.02 | This is the target for the NUV SURF(V) = 5.1+/-0.3 | exposures.
