Abstract HST has provided definitive observations of AGN host galaxies, over a large redshift range. These can be used to measure the cosmic evolution of host galaxies and to assess the connection between the formation and evolution of active nuclei (black holes) and galaxies. This requires covering a range in luminosity at each redshift, however, in order to distinguish dependences on redshift and on luminosity, which (unfortunately) are automatically well correlated in flux- limited samples. Yet *very* few low-power AGN have been imaged at high redshift (z >~ 0.5) with HST. We propose to fill this critical gap by observing 10 BL Lac objects in the STIS CCD long-pass filter (to maximize sensitivity and spatial sampling). BL Lacs are the only low-power AGN in complete samples to sufficient redshift (z>~1) to detect the effects of passive evolution of the host galaxies. Results for a closely matched sample at redshifts z <=sssim 0.5 are already available from our HST snapshot survey of BL Lac objects, which yielded detailed information on host galaxy morphologies, magnitudes, surface brightness profiles, and effective radii at low redshift. The proposed study thus probes the evolution of low-power AGN host galaxies to z~1.3, and allows direct study of how the formation and life cycles of radio-loud AGN depend on intrinsic power. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9121( 3) - 03/01/01 10:11 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ \section Why the STIS CCD is Appropriate for Our Scientific Goals The first and most important step is to detect the host galaxies. HST has been invaluable because of its high spatial resolution and stable PSF. The STIS CCD is ideal because of its excellent spatial sampling, extremely narrow PSF, low noise, and with its long-pass F28X50LP filter, high throughput and a very red response that matches well the red spectra of elliptical galaxies. The high stability of the PSF is important; matching focal position and filter, we can model it accurately using archival data (as we did for WFPC2). Most of our target BL Lacs have spectral indices Alpha ~ 1 (F_Nu \propto nu^-Alpha), and even for the reddest spectra in our sample (Alpha ~ 1.5), the contrast of host galaxy to nucleus still increases to the red, so the LP filter is the correct one. (Using such a broad filter would be a poor strategy for quasars, because of the likelihood of strong contamination by extended emission line gas.) Although the first goal is detection, color information is still readily available with the F28X50LP filter, in combination with the existing F702W data and/or other narrower filters. \section The Proposed Sample labeldosec:sample The proposed targets are high-redshift BL Lac objects from our HST snapshot survey. The original 132 proposed snapshot targets were chosen from six flux-limited samples. (These were essentially all known BL Lac objects in complete samples in 1995.) The 110 BL Lacs finally imaged, chosen at random from the larger sample, are an unbiased subset. We now impose a nuclear magnitude limit of M_R^nuc > -28.0 mag to make easier the detection of the high-z host galaxies. In order to define the optimal BL Lac sample and observing strategy (and to make sure the project was feasible), we simulated the results for various choices of targets, as follows. We generated synthetic data sets for BL Lacs in our snapshot sample with z > 0.5, assuming their host galaxies evolve passively using a synthetic model of an old stellar population, typical of an elliptical galaxy spectrum with formation redshift z = 8. We assumed a Gaussian distribution of host galaxy magnitudes about this passive evolutionary track (solid line, Fig. 2; normalized at the median M, z for low-redshift BL Lac hosts), with a standard deviation equal to that observed for the low redshift sources. These values were further randomized to simulate the error with which we expect to measure the host galaxy magnitudes (~ 0.1 mag with STIS). We then fit evolutionary slopes to a hundred such simulations, and found the redshift range and number of targets that allowed us to maximize sensitivity to host evolution while minimizing the number of orbits required. We were able to recover the input evolutionary slope (0.8 mag z^-1) to within 0.2 mag z^-1 with a complete sample of 10 BL Lacs spanning the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1.3. The difference from the no-evolution case is highly significant, and faster evolution, as expected if there were recent star formation, would be even easier to measure. Thus our sample places valuable constraints, whatever the evolution of these host galaxies may be. Our targets will be compared directly to the higher luminosity AGN observed with HST (see associated archival proposal), and to normal galaxies. The final 10 targets are the lowest power radio-loud AGN in the specified redshift range; their median extended radio power is \log P^5 GHz_ext ~ 26 W/Hz, compared to \log P^5 GHz_ext = 28.3 W/Hz for the 2 Jy quasars. Half are from the 1 Jy sample, with selection equivalent to the 2 Jy sample of quasars and radio galaxies and with 5 GHz fluxes comparable to the 3C sample, and all but the first are of the similar ``LBL" type. These targets will yield excellent host galaxy images because the nuclei are faint, V_nucl>= 17.5 mag. Relativistic beaming lets us find BL Lacs at high z but they are intrinsically low-luminosity AGN. \section Exposure Time Calculations labeldosec:etc To be conservative, we assume that the host galaxies are at the fainter end of the BL Lac low-z distribution, with M_R ~ - 23.1 mag, and that their half-light radii are the median value for detected host galaxies r_e = 8.5 kpc; it is likely they will be more luminous, if they are evolving passively (and even more so if the host has experienced recent star formation). We estimate the nuclear contribution from the HST-measured point-source magnitudes. (These can vary by a magnitude or so, which is why we imposed a conservative limit on nuclear brightness relative to the galaxy.) We expect to detect host galaxies with m_host < m_nuclear + 5. We then used the STIS exposure time calculator to derive the expected count rates for the galaxy and nucleus. Our analysis software is capable of characterizing the host galaxy very well given a signal-to- noise ratio of 3 in a 2-pixel annulus at r=0.5 arcsec. Including the effects of noise (sky, dark, read), (1+z)^4 cosmological dimming, and K-corrections for ellipticals at the given redshift, 1 orbit is sufficient for the host galaxy to be easily detected for targets with z < 0.8, 2 orbits for targets with 0.8 < z <=sssim 1, and 3 orbits for z > 1. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. We have an ongoing ground-based observing program to observe the host galaxies of BL Lac objects. Large ground- based telescopes (and long integration times) probe the low- surface brightness outer regions of the host galaxies and, in conjunction with the HST data (which are unsurpassed at the innermost regions) can improve constraints on the host galaxy properties. The joint analysis of these ground-based and HST data is a component of Matt O'Dowd's graduate thesis (the remainder is a comparison of BL Lac host galaxies with those of other AGN types). We have obtained data ourselves from the Nordic Optical Telescope (including 5 of the 10 proposed targets, which are not resolved), CFHT (directly and from the archive), Las Campanas, and CTIO, and have data from collaborators who have observed with MDM (Pesce, Marshall), Palomar (Wehrle), and Lick (Eracleous). Although joint analysis of these data with HST images will help us to better constrain the host galaxy properties, HST is critical to accurate measurement of their magnitudes and morphologies: the typical effective radii of host galaxies at these redshifts is <=sssim 0.9 arcsec (see Table), while even in good ground-based seeing the inner few arcseconds are swamped by nuclear light.
