Abstract We propose to obtain STIS long-slit spectra for a sample of 6 luminous, blue, compact galaxies (LBCGs) at z ~ 0.6. Despite being very luminous (M_B~-20), LBCGs have velocity widths Sigma ~ 60 kms and half-light radii r_e ~ 0.5'' (or R_e ~ 3Kpc). Small sizes and velocity widths suggest LBCGs are low- mass stellar systems (Mla10^10M_\odot), while their blue colors, strong emission lines and low M/L-ratios indicate they are undergoing a major starburst. If the star-forming process halts after the current burst, models predict that LBCGs will fade by ~2-4 magnitudes after a few Gyrs to reach the low luminosities and surface brightnesses characteristic of spheroidal galaxies. Thus we may be witnessing, in-situ, the last major episode of star formation in today's dwarf, low surface brightness galaxies such as NGC 205. However, recent observations suggest LBCGs are not a monolothic populations; some LBCGs may have different fates. Spatially-resolved spectroscopy will allow us to perform unique tests of this evolutionary scenario by providing: (i) measurements of rotational velocities --rather than Sigma-- to determine whether LBCGs are indeed uniformly low-mass stellar systems; and (ii) evidence for substructure associated with SN-driven galactic winds, that may shed light on the ultimate fate of the ISM in LBCGs, and thus on whether it is reasonable to expect star formation to quench after the current burst. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9126( 6) - 11/19/02 10:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We proposed to obtain long-slit spectra of 6 faint (B~21) very blue compact galaxies (LBCGs) at z~0.4-0.6. These galaxies have very high OIII5007 fluxes (i.e., I_Lambda = 1--5times10^-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 arcsec^-2). Although fainter than most objects typically observed by STIS, our LBCGs have very high average surface brightness (SB_e ~ 19 mag arcsec^-2). In fact, typical SB_e values for our sample are very similar to those of the most compact nearby elliptical galaxies, even considering the (1+z)^4 cosmological dimming. Despite this advantage, during phase-2 planning we have decided to restrict our observations to the 3 strongest-lined sources of the initial 6 targets to ensure adequate S/N to complete our science progam. In addition, we will re- observe 2 targets from our previous, related program GO 8678 were we found the data quality inadequate at lambda>9500 for H-alpha kinematics. Spectra will be obtained using the 52''* 0.2'' slit and the G750M, G750L, G430M, and G430L gratings. The medium-resolution gratings yield spectral resolutions of FWHM=2.2 Angstrom (or Sigma~45 km s^-1). This resolution matches adequately the typical velocity widths measured for this LBCG sample (i.e., Sigma ~30-100 km s^-1). The slit will be positioned along the galaxy major axis --if it is well- defined-- or along the various high surface brightness knots seen in some of the WFPC2 images. In two cases we will sample two position angles to determine of the observed velocity field is indeed consistent with rotation. For two objects we will use two different setups: a low-resolution setup to include OI3727, OIII5007 and H_Beta and a medium resolution setup around either OIII5007 or OII3727. For three other objects we will observe only in medium resolution to obtain kinematics in OII3727 or OIII4959, 5007. In all cases, wavelengths for each setup are chosen depending on the redshift of each object. We have chosen to dither the source along the slit to optimize field-flattening and bad-pixel rejection. We have used the STIS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) to estimate the adequate exposure time and S/N for the proposed observations. A flux-calibrated spectrum of a typical LBCG was used as input for the ETC program. The typical intensity of HAlpha in LBCGs is sim5*10^-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 arcsec^-2. Relative to HAlpha, the intensities of OIII, HBeta and SII, are 0.3, 0.15, and 0.2, approximately. Considering that LBCGs have a typical half-light diameter of ~0.7'', and using default values for the remaining ETC parameters, we derive a S/N of ~35 per resolution element in HAlpha for a total exposure time t=4800s. From our simulations, we estimate that S/N~30 per resolution element in the core provides adequate S/N to reliably determine the rotation curve out to ~2* r_e. The expected S/N for fainter emission lines, such as HBeta and SII is ~11 per resolution element, which is adequate for measuring intensities and deriving the OIII/HBeta and SII/HAlpha line ratios with the ~30\ shock-excited and star- forming regions. We have also used our previous observations of two LBCGs in GO 8678 (which will be observed again here) to compare to our exposure time estimates above. The total exposure time per orbit for the declination of our sample is typically ~3300s. Allowing ~900s for overheads (general, acquisition, and CCD fringes flat), we intend to observe our objects for t=2400s (CR-SPLIT) per orbit. Nominally 2 orbits per object per setup, i.e., 4 orbits per object including both setups, are needed to achieve the required S/N required in the various emission lines of interest for our analysis. We have re-allocated orbits according the the known emission- line strength of each source. The completion of our program requires a grand total of 24 orbits. Our scientific justification indicated that several dozens of KPNO 4-m nights have been invested to undertake the ground-based UBRI imaging programs as well as the low- resolution redshift identifications. Five Keck 10-m nights with the high resolution echelle have already been invested for this sample. We also have K-band images for most of our sample galaxies taken at KPNO.
