Abstract We previously used HST to determine the UV extinction curve in M31. Our result in M31, together with other studies of the Magellanic Clouds and Milky Way, suggests that dust properties vary in different environments and from galaxy to galaxy. Thus average Galactic dust properties cannot be usefully employed to correct for dust effects in different galaxies. We propose to enlarge our sample by studying the UV extinction properties of dust in M33, sampling different galactocentric distances and levels of star formation activity. The extinction curves will be derived by comparing stars with the same spectral type, but different extinction amounts, in M33. This eliminates uncertainties in using standard stars from other galaxies, that may have different intrinsic spectra. For the targets we have U, B, V and UV photometry, and accurate spectral types from ground based spectra. UV extinction gives information on the properties of dust, which is an important tracer of global heavy element abundances. The steepness of the FUV extinction affects the ionisation and molecular chemistry of a galaxy. Knowledge of the extinction curve also allows accurate corrections of observed fluxes: ultimately, relating dust properties to global galaxy parameters will enable better extinction corrections in distant galaxies and AGN. We also request WFPC2 parallel imaging to continue our stellar population studies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9127( 3) - 03/29/01 11:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Primary STIS Observations. centerline Choice of targets Thanks to the large number of stars for which we have UV-to- optical photometry and accurate spectral types, we could restrict the sample to mostly similar spectral types, so each star can be paired with more than one star to derive extinction curves. We also checked that, when corrected for extinction, the intrinsic V-mag of similar stars are indeed comparable (since the stars are at the same, known distance), which excludes possible uncertainties in luminosity class as inferred from the optical spectra. We chose reddened stars in regions where there is enough information on the visual extinction from previous ground based work, so to exclude that the high reddening comes from accidentally higher individual photometric errors. Also, we sample different galactocentric distances and environments. centerline Spectroscopy To derive the UV extinction curve, the range 1200-3300Angstrom is needed. With STIS + MAMA detectors, the G140L and G230L gratings will cover the range with only two exposures. A 0.5'' wide long slit is a good choice for easy target acquisition, rejection of spurious sources, good photometry, high throughput, and fairly narrow sky lines. On G140L, LyAlpha from the sky will be only 0.5'' *.597 Angstrom /px / .0244 arcsec/px = 12Angstrom wide. The exposure times are computed from UIT (UV fluxes), ground- based UBV photometry, spectral types from ground based spectra, plus WFPC-2 (U, B, V, F170W) photometry of seven objects, using both the STIS handbook and the on-line exposure time calculator. Exposure times aim to obtain a S/N of 30 for 5-10Angstrom bins of the stellar continuum (far- and near- UV respectively - the far-UV is crowded of strong lines) to obtain significant extinction curves. This corresponds to S/N ~ 10 at the full resolution, which allows qualitative detection of the strong stellar lines for a consistency check of the UV spectral morphology with optical spectral type (to exclude possible peculiarities) and for a correct continuum location in the far-UV range. This is important since we can only use supergiants, given the distance of the objects. With guide-star acquisition, target acquisition and read-outs, the 53 min. orbits leave about 33 min. of useful exposure time (more in consecutive orbits when only reacquisition is needed). It is essential to observe a few targets with high extinction, although time costly, for the resulting extinction curve to be significant. The uncertainty in the derived curve depends on the S/N of the spectra, and on the E(B-V) difference between the paired stars (e.g. Bianchi et al. 1996a). Additionally, the extinction of the two most reddened targets should include contribution not only from the M33 halo but also from the disk, which is important to investigate. The comparison stars have E(B-V) from nearly zero to 0.08. All targets are further than 2 arcmin from each other, so we need a separate visit for each. For some unreddened stars, a higher S/N than the minimum requirement set for the reddened objects will be reached in one orbit, increasing the accuracy of the extinction curve. The higher S/N will also permit a stellar line analysis, extending our previous studies of hot stars properties (e.g. Bianchi and Scuderi 1999a), which we will pursue as a secondary goal. To keep the acquisition simple, we restricted the choice of targets to stars that have no other comparable objects within 5 arcsec. Therefore, overheads will include only the guide star acquisition (6 minutes), the STIS onboard acquisition (about 6 minutes), and the spectra readout. , Parallel imaging. During the STIS spectroscopic exposures, we will obtain parallel imaging with the WFPC2. By posing (very loose) contraints on s/c orientation ranges, which translates into performing the observations within certain time periods, we can assure that the parallel observations cover interesting regions of M 33. This was successfully performed in our GO6038 and GO8207 programs (in M 33) and in our cycle 6 GO6567 program (in NGC 6822), which produced a wealth of results. Our experience in the previous cycles, and examination of the HST Spacecraft angles throughout the year, show that the position of M 33 in the sky permits desired HST orientations without imposing stringent time constraints. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Orientation ranges will be specified in phase II to optimize location of the parallel imaging. According to our simulations, these will translate into broad scheduling intervals. No further complementary data are needed. Our past analysis of UIT images of M33 in the near- and far- UV filters, and complementary ground based photometry, followed by extensive optical spectroscopy of the UV-brightest stars, for accurate determination of spectral type, extinction, and magnitudes (Massey et al 1996), provided the choice of targets for the proposed research. Additional WFPC2 photometry (U, B, V, F170W) is available for seven stars from previous (ours or archive) programs.
