Abstract Through STIS moderate resolution spectroscopy, we propose to search for Mg II and Mg I absorption from Galactic High Velocity Clouds (HVCs) along the sightlines of 51 of the brightest QSOs, BL Lacs and Seyfert 2 galaxies in the sky. The origins of the HVCs are still not known with certainty, despite the fact that they are probably the direct manifestations of the physical processes which drive and regulate the Milky Way's interstellar medium. Detection of Mg II at our anticipated sensitivity level would correspond to a neutral hydrogen column density of ~ 2* 10^17 \pcm , a factor of five below that which has been detected in 21 cm surveys. We aim to: establish the covering factor of gas at this level across the sky; search for absorption with no corresponding 21 cm emission; examine the velocity structure of the absorbing clouds with the G230MB's resolution of 20 kms ; and establish a database of HVCs toward the brightest UV background sources to enable future researchers to study the clouds in more detail. Past studies with HST have probed only 10 lines-of- sight through the Galactic halo at resolutions of < 200 kms , and our SNAPshot survey should more than triple the sample of HVCs identified from their absorption lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9128( 2) - 02/13/01 10:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We wish to use the G230MB centered at 2836 Angstrom , and 52x0.2 aperture, in SNAPshot mode to observe QSOs, BL Lacs and Seyfert 2 galaxies with fluxes F_lambda(2800)>=1.0*10^-14 \flux . This limit is adopted for the following reason. We assume that no snapshot should be longer than 42 minutes in total, in keeping with the distribution of times quoted in the Call for Proposals. The overheads for a STIS observation are 6 mins for a GS ACQ, 6 mins for the ACQ of the target (no peak-up is required for the 0.2 arcsec slit) and a 5 min CCD ACCUM overhead, a total of 17 minutes. For a 42 min total exposure, this then leaves 25 minutes on source. This gives us a minimum S/N of 10 per pixel at 2800 Angstrom, which as we showed in Fig. 2, is adequate to detect Mg II lines with 3Sigma equivalent width limits of 80 mAngstrom . The wavelength coverage of the G230MB (2758-2914 Angstrom ) also covers Mg I, and since the sensitivity is higher at 2850 Angstrom, the equivalent width limits reached will be slightly better for this ion. Our target list has been divided into three groups of objects, for which we can achieve a S/N of >= 10 in 15, 20, and 25 minutes on-source exposure times (corresponding to 32, 37, and 42 minutes of total time including overheads). These groups contain 9, 14, and 28 objects respectively. Based on the completion rates for SNAPshot observations in past cycles, we can expect that ~ 30 of the targets in our sample will be observed. The choice of detector, grating, and slit optimize the scheduling of this program; using the G230MB with the CCD increases the scheduling flexibility enormously as compared to the G230M grating with the NUV-MAMA, since the opportunity to use the STIS MAMAs is restricted by the need to avoid the South Atlantic Anomaly. The exact resolution of our observations is determined from the Line Spread Functions (LSFs) given in Table 13.34 of the STIS Instrument Handbook. The CCD First Order LSF has a FWHM of 1.3 pixels below 3200 Angstrom , which corresponds to 0.2 Angstrom , since the dispersion of the grating does not change, which is equivalent to 21 kms FWHM at 2800 Angstrom . This value is higher than that suggested by the STIS Spectrographic Capabilities Table (4.1), although the 30 kms\ resolution suggested by that table does not change our sensitivity to weak lines by any significant amount. We note that the 0.2 arcsec slit is favoured over the 0.5 arcsec slit to avoid the broad wings seen in the 52x0.5 aperture LSF. We will use CR-SPLIT=2 for the exposures with no binning along the dispersion or spatial axis and a gain of 1 e^-/ADU. We have not selected binning in either direction since the expected small gain in S/N does not offset the loss in LSF sampling or the increase in difficulty of cosmic ray rejection. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We will use the new echelle on the 3.5 m ARC telescope at the Apache Point Observatory to observe all the QSOs which HST observes. High resolution, high S/N data of the optical Ca II and Na I absorption lines are valuable in constraining the velocity structure in absorption line complexes, as well as providing information on the calcium gas phase abundance of the absorber.
