Abstract We propose to complete our STIS snapshot survey of distant galaxies of known redshift which hosted supernovae (SNe) of Type Ia found via the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP). The Hubble diagram of these SNe yields measurements of the cosmological parameters (Omega, Lambda) that are inconsistent with a flat Universe of zero cosmological constant. Even if the universe is not flat, Lambda > 0 is indicated with strong statistical confidence (>99 per cent) confidence is now limited more by the possibility of systematic errors than statistical uncertainty. In particular, it is important to justify convincingly that environmental differences between low and high redshift SNe are accounted for by current lightcurve width-color-luminosity correction methods. Tackling systematic effects in the SCP dataset via detailed studies of the host galaxies is being undertaken both with this HST snapshot program (where the SNe Hubble diagram is being examined with respect to the host galaxy morphology and galacto-centric distance for each SN) and an associated spectroscopic campaign on the Keck telescope (which constrains the likely stellar populations and extinction variations at the SN site). The first results from both aspects are encouraging and support the SCP's conclusions. However, only 33 of the 63 originally- requested snapshot images have been secured. We thus request the snapshot program be continued to completion in Cycle 10. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9131( 4) - 04/25/02 09:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ HST has clearly demonstrated its ability to determine the morphology of galaxies at the mean redshift of our SN sample (z=0.5) (Abraham et al 1996). Our ground-based images contain ~5-8 sources within the STIS field sufficient to define the astrometric location of the SN to better than ~0.2 arcsec. The high efficiency of STIS make the snapshot mode highly suited to our scientific goals (c.f. Figure 2). We require images of sufficient signal/noise to determine the morphology of galaxies of known absolute magnitude and redshift. We have revisited the requirements using both the STIS simulator and by examining all our existing STIS images. A reliable galaxy morphology at z~0.4- 0.8 requires a S/N=1 per 0.1 arcsec box at a limiting surface brightness of Mu_B=24.1 arcsec^-2 and Mu_R=25.5 arcsec^-2. These isophotal limits correspond to 3 scale lengths in a disk galaxy at z~0.5 consistent with such sources being marginally resolved from the ground. A few (6) of our original images had insufficient S/N to derive reliable morphologies. These are slightly lower surface brightness galaxies which could benefit from longer STIS exposure. In this continuation we propose to revisit those sources and also take advantage of the increased snapshot exposure time made possible in Cycle 10. No target acquisition or guiding is necessary so overheads are minimal. The overall sample is identifical to that considered in Cycle 8; no new targets are being proposed. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The SCP is willing to waive the proprietary time for the snapshot programme provided this can apply to the data after completion of the first year of snapshot observations. Given the images arrive at a slow rate, even a modest proprietary period would otherwise mean others could construct samples almost as large as ours at any time and publish ahead of us. A coordinated campaign of high s/n follow-up spectroscopy with the Keck ESI is being undertaken following receipt of these STIS images (Figure 3). However, this presents no scheduling issues.
