Abstract Millimeter and IR studies suggest at least 50 percent of pre-main sequence solar- mass stars, the T Tauri stars, have circumstellar disks similar to the disk from which our planetary system formed. High spatial resolution, high dynamic range imaging of such systems maps the spatial distribution of material around the star, constraining the disk sizes and inclinations, and provides a first assessement of when structure in the disk, such as cleared central zones and annuli, which has been linked to planet formation, develops. HST coronographic studies have probed circumstellar material around older solar-mass stars (NICMOS), and intermediate-mass stars (STIS). WFPC2 direct optical imaging has revealed the disks only for 10 percent of T Tauri stars with firm millimeter detections, with the detections more common among the younger (~ 10^4-10^5 yr), heavily embedded objects. Understanding the nature of planet formation requires comparable coverage of disks around solar- mass stars with ages of a few Myr. We propose filling this gap in the current survey coverage with STIS broadband, optical, coronagraphic imaging of a sample of ~1-3 Myr old T Tauri stars. Our program stars have firm indications of disks from the millimeter, but require deeper optical imaging such as can only be provided by STIS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9136( 8) - 09/10/01 15:14 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Target selection criteria: Our program stars are all Lada Class II objects, with age estimates from ~0.5 to several Myr, coeval with the younger Herbig Ae/Be stars, and younger than the the solar-mass stars with coronagraphic data in the HST archive. These stars were chosen to be objects with mm- excesses indicative of cold dust at sufficiently large distances from the star to be resolvable by HST. We have excluded those objects with bright companions which are sufficiently offset from the target star that occultation of both objects at the same time would be problematic. Our target list includes the stars sampled by Stapelfeldt et al. which showed only bare PSFs in the WFPC2 observations, or which showed nebulosity but which could not be imaged sufficiently close to the star. noindent Feasibility of Detecting Disks: Like the STIS survey of PMS A stars, our target list is biased toward stars with millimeter data indicating the presence of circumstellar material on sufficiently large angular scales to be detectable by STIS. We therefore expect a detection fraction for circumstellar nebulosity near ~50 percent of our sample. The STIS bandpass is also sensitive to emission line nebulosity associated with bipolar outflows (Grady et al. 2000; Devine et al. 2000). Given that our sample is biased toward objects with extended CO and millimeter continuum disk detections, null detections in the optical, while not as photogenic as detections, are scientifically extremely important, since, in tandem with multiwavelength observations, they can establish the presence of stellar companions and/or place lower bounds on the grain size in the disks. Exposure Time estimates: The existing WFPC2 exposures typically consist of a short exposure (F606W for program 7387, and F675W for program 6681) with the star exposed to 3 million electrons. 10x deeper WFPC exposures typically resulted in saturation on the stellar image, but no detection of circumstellar material. Since, for T Tauri stars, the effective bandpass of the STIS is ~4 times broader than the WFPC wide band exposures near 6000 Angstrom , we propose integrating 2.5 times longer than the deep WFPC2 exposure times, corresponding to effective exposures a factor of 100 deeper than the WFPC2 short exposures. All observations will be obtained as at least CR-SPLIT=3 for cosmic ray filtering. These exposures will yield S/N comparable to that seen in the 6s/CR- SPLIT=8 AB Aur observation (observation id=O57Z02010). Nebulosity was detectable in this exposure in the raw data to within 2.5" of the star.For our brighter targets ( e.g. SU Aur) we will obtain CR-SPLIT=8 observations filling the full target visibility window, which will yield exposures comparable to the 144s (18x8 CR-SPLIT) integration for AB Aur. This exposure achieved S/N=4-4.5 per resolution element 3" from the star for the circumstellar material after PSF subtraction. noindent Need for Two Spacecraft Orientations: Our experience with STIS incidates that 2 observations, made with different roll angles, are optimal for separation of circumstellar nebulosity from the HST+STIS PSF. Optimal reconstruction of the field around the star, given the complex geometry of the STIS coronagraphic wedge and the stellar diffraction spikes requires separations of the spacecraft orientations of 20-60^degrees. Where feasible we will select orientations maximizing visibility of the disk in one orientation and ensuring that known jet features and/or the disk semi-minor axis are imaged in the other orientation. Disk extent, where known from the millimeter is listed in table 1. The targets will need 2 orbits each to obtain data at the 2 orientations: together with the calibration data, the full program requires 28 orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Separation of the circumstellar nebulosity from the residual PSF, even using the STIS Coronagraphic wedge, requires subtraction of a PSF standard star obtained with a similar observing strategy, and at the same wedge aperture location. Despite the NICMOS experience that matching of spacecraft breathing residuals is important, the huge bandwidth of the STIS CCD (0.2-1.0Mum means that color effects dominate the PSF, with breathing residuals a minor effect in comparison. The STIS GTO experience, based on Herbig Ae stars, is that color mismatches as small as Delta(B-V)=0.08 are easily detectable. A priori color matching T Tauri stars is somewhat more \char'134 challenging" since the IR excesses are a larger fraction of the total optical light, and both the stellar magnitudes and colors vary erratically. The approach used by the Stapelfeldt and Padgett in their studies of T Tauris and YSOs has been to assemble a library of stellar PSFs and then find the ones that work the best for a given science observation. Unlike the WFPC2 team who had a large archival database of late-type stellar PSFs to work with, the STIS coronagraphic modes have only 2 T Tauri stars (T Cha and RY Lup), as well as the late-type stellar sources HD 154653 (KOV, B-V=0.937) and HD 181204(MOV, B-V=1.65). We propose supplementing these observations with a grid of other stars chosen to be separated by Delta(B -V)=0.1. Our calibration stars are comparatively nearby, high proper motion objects which have been chosen to have no documented, nearby stellar companions, and no indication of infrared excesses (thus avoiding the embarrassing process of explaining to a referee why you ended up using the likes of Beta Pic or 51 Oph as a PSF calibrator - it's been done (Grady, et al. 1999; Weinberger et al. 1999), but it's not an optimal solution). We are not emotionally attached to these stars as the calibration sources, and are more than willing to discuss alternate targets should the STScI decide to expand the coronographic calibration for STIS. These observations may be placed in the public domain immediately after acquisition to be available to other STIS observing programs using the coronagraph, and to be incorporated into the PSF library (proposal by Woodgate et al., if approved). A total of 6 orbits will be required for these calibration observations. While reduction of the STIS coronagraphic data does not require the availability of coordinated observations, our experience with synoptic studies of PMS stars has taught us that the availability of synoptic spectroscopic, photometric and polarimetric data can frequently enhance our understanding of these stars. Such data can be used to separate intrinsic stellar variability from variability due to intermittent obscuration of the stars by circumstellar material in the line of sight. We will explore the feasibility of obtaining coordinated observations of our program stars at the epoch of the STIS coronagraphic imaging and as part of longer-term synoptic studies of these objects.
