5. Abstract

We propose STIS spectroscopy of 15 bright (V < 18) quasars in a 22 square degree
region that has well-sampled galaxy redshifts. This is a unique asterism of quasars
of this brightness. The spectra will yield ~183 Lyman-alpha absorbers, ~119 of which
will be in the range 0 < z < 0.2, with rest equivalent widths complete to ~0.21
Angstroms. This grid of probes will allow the most sensitive test of absorber-
absorber and absorber- galaxy clustering ever. On the typical transverse scales
between lines of sight of 1-2 h_100^-1 Mpc, we will be able to detect absorber-
absorber correlation that is 10-20 times weaker than galaxy-galaxy correlations.
With a typical number of absorbers per sightline of ~13, the ~630 h_100^-1 Mpc depth
of the volume can be used to locate absorbers with respect to sheets and voids in
the galaxy distribution. The coherence length and correlation strength of the
absorbers will be compared against cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of the
local universe, using similar methods to select absorption lines in the data and the
simulations. The quasar spectra can be used to directly measure the power spectrum
of fluctuations on scales of 1-10 h_100^-1 Mpc, and the quiescence of the cosmic
velocity field on scales of 1-2 h_100^-1 Mpc. Lyman- alpha absorbers are expected to
trace the underlying dark matter potential, and their use in measuring large scale
structure is an important complement to the use of galaxy redshift surveys.

  Observations Description
  ------------------------

     Instrumental Configuration: The design of this experiment is governed by the
     goal of achieving the maximum number of absorption probes in a limited area of
     sky that has excellent coverage in a galaxy redshift survey. The limited space
     density of quasars bright enough for a moderate signal to noise STIS spectrum
     provides the practical limitation. The choice of grating is driven by the trade
     -offs between throughput, resolution and pathlength. Observing Lyman-alpha at
     0<z<0.2 requires the use of the FUV MAMA. Grating G140L offers the highest
     throughput of the available gratings, with moderate resolution of ~215 km/s,
     which is sufficient to detect clustering on the scale of galaxy groups
     (although velocity matches of absorbers between lines of sight do not suffer
     this limitation), and a bandpass of 610 Angstroms that enables detection of
     Lyman-alpha absorbers to z~0.42. The absorption lines will be unresolved with
     this grating. Target Selection: To measure absorber clustering on scales 1-20
     Mpc, we looked for a grouping of bright, low- redshift quasars from the
     literature that lie within about a 5 degree field of view. We used as a source
     list the Catalogue of Quasars and Active Nuclei - 9th Edition (Veron- Cetty &
     Veron 2000, ESO Scientific Report No. 19) current as of March 2000, the most
     recent compilation of quasars and AGN that readily provides a magnitude and
     redshift. We restricted the region of sky to be search to the areas covered by
     the 2dF and LCRS Galaxy surveys that are producing complete galaxy catalogs
     (down to 0.2L_*) out to redshifts of 0.2. Additionally, the 2dF survey will
     measure many galaxies at higher redshifts (roughly L_* at z = 0.3). Sloan
     Survey sky coverage will exceed that of 2dF, but the data release is several
     years away. The galaxy component of the experiment uses the 2dF survey: the
     largest ever, with over 100, 000 galaxy redshifts, and data in the region of
     our experiment will be published within a year. We note that all the objects in
     the area selected by the large 2dF quasar survey have V > 18.3 and so are too
     faint for HST spectroscopy in reasonable integration times. There is a chance
     that the UV flux from a particular line of sight to a quasar will be completely
     absorbed by an intervening Lyman-alpha limit system (LLS). This probability is
     computed as a function of redshift using the fitted coefficients to the
     evolution of such systems at low redshift (Stengler-Larrea et al. 1995, ApJ
     444, 64). We find that a z_qso=1.1 quasar has a 3% chance of having the UV flux
     totally absorbed somewhere in the wavelength region corresponding to Lyman-
     alpha absorption at 0<z<0.2. Lyman limit absorption will not result in the loss
     of a significant path length in this experiment if we impose the restriction
     z_qso<1.1. Also, quasars fainter than about V=18 will require too many orbits
     to obtain a SNR sufficient to detect absorbers to a column density of log N ~
     13.8. After searching the quasar catalogs in a way that was optimized for
     maximum brightness, minimum redshift (but above z = 0.2 to give Lyman-alpha
     pathlength), and smallest and most uniform transverse separations, we found an
     excellent grouping of 15 quasars with z_qso<1.1 and V<=18.0 that are within a
     ~7 degree field of view in the southern 2dF region centered at R.A.=0.85 hours,
     Dec.=-29 degrees. Thirteen of the 15 quasars (and most of the 3D clustering
     baselines) fall within a region of 12 square degrees. Based on the well-
     measured surface density of quasars brighter than V = 18, the expected number
     of quasars in such a small area is 2-3, and the observed number represents a
     fluctuation that is unlikely to occur anywhere else on the entire sky (this is
     true even though quasars themselves are clustered; the angular correlation of
     quasars on these scales is small). The asterism is therefore the only one for
     which this experiment is possible with current HST instrumentation. Exposure
     Time Calculation: The number of orbits per target was selected to produce a
     spectrum capable of detecting Lyman-alpha absorbers to an HI column density of
     log N = 13.8 over the redshift range 0<z<0.2. Exposure times for each of the
     target quasars were estimated using the STIS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC).
     The model QSO spectrum available through the ETC is limited in rest UV
     coverage, and cannot be used to compute the exposure times for quasars with
     z_qso > 0.5. For the best estimate of a template quasar spectrum, we
     concatenated the HST composite spectrum (heavily smoothed for wavelengths less
     than about 1000 Angstroms) with a composite spectrum from the Large Bright
     Quasar Survey (Francis et al. 1991, Ap.J., 373, 465), normalizing them to
     overlap at the tail of the HST spectrum which lies at about 3000 Angstroms. The
     template thus uses the HST composite in the rest UV, and the LBQS to tether to
     the V band; in this way similarly low redshift quasars are used throughout. A
     comparison of this template with the STIS ETC model spectrum shows that the two
     overlap for wavelengths shorter than Lyman-alpha emission and longer than about
     3000 Angstroms, with the STIS ETC model spectrum having slightly higher flux
     between these two points. Therefore, we chose to use the ETC QSO model
     spectrum, smoothing the continuum blueward of Lyman-alpha emission, as the best
     model of the quasar continuum flux. Exposure times were computed for each
     quasar by redshifting this model spectrum to that of the target QSO and making
     it available for use as a ``User Supplied Spectrum'' by the STIS ETC. An
     exposure time is selected for each quasar such that the resulting spectra have
     a SNR that gives a similar equivalent width limit over the range 0<z< 0.2. For
     a 4 sigma line and the G140L grating, which has a resolution of 0.96 Angstroms
     and a dispersion of 0.6 Angstroms, a SNR per resolution element of 18.3
     corresponds to a limiting rest equivalent width of 0.21 Angstroms. This is a
     column density of log N = 13.8 for an absorber with velocity width of 30 km/s.
     The expected number of Lyman-alpha absorbers was calculated based on the line
     density as a function of redshift and equivalent width published by the HST
     Absorption Line Key Project, using the detection limit as a function of
     wavelength based on our adopted template spectrum. We note that this experiment
     will detect ~ 30% more absorbers at z < 0.2 than the Key Project. The total
     integration time per target includes overheads appropriate for a multi-orbit
     STIS exposure. The 15 targets are itemized in the Observing Summary and 49
     orbits are requested.
