Abstract Imaging studies of quasar host galaxies at high redshift are biased toward detecting luminous hosts. Gravitational lensing combined with optical and near-IR imaging enhances their detectivity and has nearly doubled the number of known hosts at z>1. Lens studies have successfully imaged hosts with lower luminosities (L < L_*$), at farther distances (1 < z < 4), beneath a larger fraction of quasars than imaging of non- lensed quasars. We propose deep WFPC2 followup imaging of five lensed systems in the F555W and F814W filters, which offer unique opportunities for detailed studies of faint, high-redshift, quasar hosts. This science can not be achieved by imaging of unlensed quasars, or from the ground, because of their small angular sizes. Based on their favorable image geometry, pre-existing near-IR fluxes, and predicted colors, we will detect them with reasonable exposure times. We will measure the colors and luminosities of these 5 quasar hosts in order to study their stellar populations, star formation histories, dust, correlations with properties of the AGN central engine, and black hole growth rate. Resolving the host structure will also help to determine the dark matter distribution of the foreground lens galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9138( 2) - 02/19/01 10:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose deep I (F814W) and V (F555W) band WFPC2 imaging of five lensed quasars using the PC. We require HST because high resolution is crucial to resolving the hosts and the quasars (the angular sizes are DeltaTheta<= 2"), because low sky background is necessary to detect the faint hosts, and because a stable point spread function is needed for quasar image subtractions. All five host galaxies were detected in single orbit NICMOS H band (F160W) observations, 4 orbits WFPC2 I band (F814W) observations of B 1600 and MG 1131. For the other 3 objects, the archived WFPC2 data were ~ 1000 sec, and are completely insufficient to estimate an optical luminosity or optical to infrared color for the host galaxy. The 5 cover the redshift range from z_s=1.29 to z_s=2.3; all are doubly imaged quasars except for B 0712. We estimated the exposure times from the surface brightness of the host in the NICMOS H-band images, and assuming a red stellar population (I--H=3 mag to I-- H=4 mag) based on Charlot & Bruzual (1993, ApJ, 405: 538) stellar synthesis models at the redshift of the quasars. We assumed a red color so that we would have the necessary dynamic range to cover the expected colors of all plausible stellar populations. We did not calculate the effect of reddening and extinction explicitly, except to account for it roughly by assuming a color 0.5 magnitudes redder than the prediction of the synthesis models. Dust when it is mixed with the stars affects luminosities far more than colors. Thus, because we have normalized to the observed H flux, the exposure times will be little affected by dust. Our estimated exposure times are intended to detect color gradient in the arcs. H-band images indicate that the flux in the arcs drop off by a factor of 2--3 between one and two PSF FWHM away from the quasar point source, and we assume this will be roughly true in V and I filters. Based on the estimated H-V and V-I colors for the host galaxy, our exposure times will yield S/N~7 per pixel for the host galaxy at one seeing disk away from the quasar point source, and S/N~5 two seeing disks away (in both V and I filters). Since we assumed an intrinsically red stellar population, we have significantly greater leeway in measuring accurate color gradients if the galaxies are blue and star-forming. Our confidence in the estimates is partly justified by MG 1131 and B 1600, where the observed I-band surface brightnesses agrees with our predictions. Where data already exist in the archive (but with insufficient exposure time) in V and I filters, we deduct the appropriate amount from our total estimated exposure times. For the bright quasar CTQ 414, we will divide about 1/2 of total exposure into long exposures (roughly 1400 seconds per exposure) and 1/2 into short (roughly 800 seconds per exposure) to avoid saturation. For HE 1104-1805, exposure times will be about 400 to 800 seconds, thus should not exceed full well, and will be taken with CLOCK=YES to reduce the readout times. All exposures will be cosmicray split. We considered and ultimately rejected the idea of obtaining PSF templates at the time of the observations as an unnecessary overhead. The lens magnification stretches the images of the host out from under the PSF core into an area where PSF subtraction can be done more easily. Our experience with existing deep WFPC2 images of MG0414+0534 and Q0957+561 shows that TinyTim synthetic PSFs are adequate for studying the lensed hosts. The population of 5 objects described in this proposal will add to the 2 other lensed systems (MG 0414+0534 and BRI 0952--0115) for which any study of quasar hosts will have color gradient information beyond z=0.5. There are an additional >~ 5 systems for which the type of study proposed here is possible, but which would require twice to three times the integration times per object compared to our current request. We defer this possibility to later cycles.
