Abstract We identified a population of emission-line objects in DPOSS, which can be plausibly interpreted as the long-sought type-2 quasars. They have high-ionization Seyfert-2 like spectra, but with narrow-line luminosities comparable to those of the luminous type-1 quasars in the same redshift range. Keck spectropolarimetry confirms the presence of hidden QSO nuclei in them. This provides a major piece of evidence in favor of the unified schemes for AGN, and it should help extend our understanding of AGN in general. This population may be a major contributor to the cosmic hard x-ray background. It is complementary to the optically dull hard x-ray sources found by Chandra. We propose to obtain multi-color images of a representative sample of these objects, in order to examine their morphology with the superior angular resolution of the HST. We may be able to detect point-like nuclei which are not detectable in ground-based images, the dust lanes hiding them from our view, possible evidence for tidal interactions and the overall morphology of their hosts, etc. We also propose for Chandra observations for a subsample of 5 objects, in order to probe the column densities of the obscuring material and to constrain their bolometric luminosities. This study would greatly increase our understanding of these objects, which are an important missing link in the overall picture of AGN populations in the universe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9145( 3) - 08/09/01 09:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to observe a sample of 20 of our best type-2 QSO candidates, in the SNAP survey mode, with WFPC2 in three filters: F450W, F675W, and F814W and with 1 orbit per target. After accounting for the various overheads (acquisition, filter changes, readouts, etc.), we estimate that for a typical target we could expose for 900 sec in F450W, 500 sec in F675W, and 400 sec in F814W. Typical continuum magnitudes of these objects in the Gunn r band are ~ 19 mag, and typical O III 5007 line fluxes are ~ 10^-14 erg/cm^2/s. Using the exposure times listed above, and assuming a spectrum of the host galaxy to be comparable to an early-type (Sa) spiral at a z ~ 0.35, we use the ETC to estimate S/N. Existing HST images of galaxies in clusters at comparable redshifts z ~ 0.33 show them to be well resolved, with the Hubble types clearly distinguishable. Depending on the extent and geometry of the host galaxy, we derive S/N ~ 5 - 20 per pixel for the host galaxy starlight, and a somewhat higher S/N for the extended O III emission, if any is present (if the narrow-line regions are unresolved, the S/N for the nucleus would be > 100). If there is a B ~ 25 mag nucleus present atop of the host galaxy, it would be detected at a ~ 10-Sigma level. Thus, a single orbit per target would be adequate for our purposes. Estimates of the Chandra exposures are described below. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. We request CXO observations for 5 of the targets. We estimate the expected X-ray flux in the Chandra band by taking the ratio of measured (unabsorbed) X-ray flux to O III line ratio for a sample of 54 PG QSOs and multiplying by the typical O III line strengths of objects in our sample. For the DPOSS objects, this ranges from a few * 10^-12 -- few * 10^-14 erg/cm^2/s (2 - 10 keV) for the nuclear component, assuming a photon power law index of 1.8. The range absorbing column for each individual object, is, of course, unknown, but will range from 10^22 < N_H < 10^24cm^-2 for type-2 objects (Maiolino 2000). None of the sources for which we have polarimetry were detected in the ROSAT sky survey and WGACAT databases. We request 5 ksec per target, which is conservative enough to guarantee detection for most targets, if they exhibit the range of intrinsic luminosities and columns from the samples described above. For the brightest nuclei with the lowest columns, the countrate would be high: 0.074 cps in the 1 -- 10 keV band. For this high a countrate, pileup would be a problem, however we expect <1 of our ten sources to have such a low column, based on the range measured for Seyfert 2's. For a typical (median based on our sample) nuclear flux of 10^-13 erg/cm^2/s and a column of 10^23, we would obtain 1.5 * 10^-2cps (1 -- 10 keV), or 225 photons. This is sufficient for a good determination of the column depth and intrisic luminosity. Even for a column 5 times higher, we would measure 20 photons.
