Abstract HST has resolved light echos around two Type Ia supernovae, SN 1991T and 1998bu and demonstrated that the distance between a supernova and dust clouds in the host galaxy disk can be determined with an accuracy of better than ~ 20pc. We propose to take STIS snapshot images of a subset of 43 well observed Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia), most of which have been discovered in late type galaxies over the last 40 years to make a systematic search for light echos around SN Ia. We will also observe a sample of 10 SN II and SN Ib/c, which are believed to be the result of massive star core collapse and, therefore, to be thin-disk population objects, in order to make an empirical calibration of the accuracy of our method for determining scale heights. The SN Ia sample will provide a direct as well as accurate estimate of the scale height of SN Ia which is an important clue to the progenitors of these events. The distance between the observer and the supernova is 30 Mpc (cz=2000 km/s). Echos from dust just 20 pc from the supernova will be resolved within a few years after their maximum light. endfigure We propose to obtain STIS snapshot images of type Ia supernovae with well-observed light curves near maximum that have been discovered in the past 40 years, plus a few older ones worth including in our study. An additional requirement for our selection is that the SN peak magnitude be brighter than V~15 so as to make an echo detection possible. The selected SN Ia targets (43) are listed in the tables below (Table 1 SN Ia exploded before 1995, Table 2 more recent SN Ia); the reddening values are from the compilations by Della Valle and Panagia (1992) and Phillips et al (1999). We have included SN 1991T and 1998bu in our target list so as to have an internal ``calibration" of our measurements: this is because the original observations were made with WFPC2 in the V band, whereas here we use unfiltered STIS CDD imaging which accepts photons in the whole optical range. Our SN Ia list includes also a few targets with no obvious extinction and/or in ellipticals where no echos are expected. This group will provide a test against false detections of echos. In addition to the listed SN Ia, we will observe a total of 10 SN II and/or SN Ib/c (which are believed to be the result of massive star core collapse and, therefore, to be thin-disk population objects) in order to make an empirical calibration of the accuracy of our method for determining scale heights. Examples of these classes of SNe are SN 1983N (Ib) in M83 and 1980K (IIL) in NGC6946. In summary, our sample will include 34 SN Ia in spiral galaxies with high extinction, 9 SN Ia in lower extinction spiral galaxies or ellipticals, and 10 SN II and SN Ib/c in normal spirals, for a total of 53 objects. The images will be taken with STIS in the 50CCD mode (unfiltered) to maximize the flux from the echos. The astrometric accuracy of the ground-based observations is ~ 0.5'', but there is likely to be a number of objects within the error boxes. As shown in figure 3, any light echo from dust more than 20 pc from the supernova will be resolved with the STIS even for galaxies more than 30 Mpc away. Using the STIS-ETC, and considering the case of an echo with 1" diameter and and a width Delta r/r~eq0.1, we estimate that a 900s exposure in the 50CCD mode will enable us to detect echos with a S/N ratio of 10 down to an integrated V~ 25, i.e. about 3 magnitudes fainter than those we have measured around SN 1991T and 1998bu.
