Abstract ISO deep surveys have uncovered a population of galaxies which are making stars at the fantastic rate of > 100 M_odotyr^-1 in the redshift range from 0.4 to 1.5. However this population evolves rapidly and luminous star-forming galaxies are 5 to 10 times more numerous at z=1 than today. Combination of ISO data with radio (VLA), sub-mm (SCUBA) and optical data shows that they contribute a major fraction (30-50$\ representing only a few percent of the field galaxy population. HST imaging of a small subsample of these galaxies indicates that most of them are disks showing disrupted morphologies or possessing companions, emphasizing the role of merging in their star formation history. We propose to image the two CFRS fields which contain the largest number of bolometrically luminous galaxies ever observed at all wavelengths. Together, they cover 36 times more area than the HDF and 8 times more area than the ultradeep ISO field and contain nearly 200 ISO/SCUBA/VLA sources at a few 100 MuJy level, most of them being luminous star-forming galaxies. Morphology and (V--I) colors of ~ 80 of these objects, combined with deep spectroscopy at the VLT and Keck, will allow us to probe the nature and formation of these objects which may be progenitors of today's massive galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9149( 2) - 02/16/01 11:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For the CFRS 1415+52 field, we propose to observe with the WFPC2 one area in two filters each (F606W and F814W). The centers of the WFPC2 images are chosen so as to maximize the number of ISO/VLA galaxies contained in each image. Our images will contain on average 12 galaxies detected either at 7Mum, 15Mum or at 5 GHz and with a spectroscopic redshift already available. We also request to observe in that field one additional area with the F606W filter to provide color information for objects already observed with F814W during Cycles 5 and 6 (PI: Lilly). For the CFRS 0300+00 field, we propose to observe two areas in two colors (F606W and F814W) and two areas with F606W to obtain complementary color information on existing F814W data. The total number of orbits requested is thus:, 3 WFPC2 positions x 2 filters x 3 orbits + 3 WFPC2 positions X 1 filter x 3 orbits (complementary color information) = 27 orbits., These observations will provide a grand total of 72 ISO/VLA starburst galaxies observed in two filters, which is a huge improvement from the present available sample of 6 such objects observed in two filters and 20 observed in one filter. Exposures will be CR-split, giving 6 sub-exposures for CR-removal. The equatorial field (the 0300+00 field) will require a total exposure time of 7200 seconds or 3 orbits per filter to reach V~ 25 mag and I~ 24 mag. The field at higher declination (the 1415+52 field) will need a slightly longer exposure time of 7800 seconds or 3 orbits per filter to reach the same limiting magnitudes. A total of 27 orbits is thus requested to achieve the same depth as the existing images which we have used successfully for morphological classification studies and faint source identifications (see Brinchmann et al. 1998, ApJ, 499, 112).
