Abstract We propose to obtain FUV and NUV images of nearby emission- line galaxies with existing star-formation rate (SFR) measurements from their HAlpha flux. Recently, the use of the UV flux as a measure of SFR has gained much popularity for estimating SFRs at different cosmic epochs (0 < z < 5). However, the SFR estimated from UV flux could be greatly biased due to dust extinction. The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) provides a large sample of nearby HAlpha-selected starforming galaxies for which rich optical spectra are available for measuring metallicity and dust extinction through line ratios. By observing a subset of nearby emission-line galaxies in the KISS sample with the STIS FUV and NUV MAMA, a direct comparison between UV and HAlpha SFR estimates will be possible. This will allow us to understand the effect of dust extinction on UV flux for star- forming galaxies over a wide range of HAlpha luminosity (10^39-43 erg/sec), metallicity (0.1 to 2 * solar), absolute magnitude (-14 to -21), and B-V color (0.2 to 1.2). A rough dust extinction curve will be constructed for such objects, making it possible to test plausible dust extinction curves used in previous SFR studies of the distant universe. Also, high-resolution UV images will allow us to search for plausible local counterparts to high redshift galaxies whose rest-frame UV morphology is available from existing optical HST data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9151( 5) - 04/06/01 15:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our proposed study requires imaging observations of emission- line galaxies at rest frame FUV (1500 Angstrom, DeltaLambda=220 Angstrom) and NUV (2500 Angstrom, DeltaLambda=1010 Angstrom). Clearly, such UV observations of local emission-line galaxies are only possible from space. We will observe 70 emission-line galaxies with the STIS MAMA detector in imaging mode. The sample will be divided evenly into roughly 16 bins, to enable a multidimensional study of dust extinction in galaxies with small or large metallicity (or faint or bright absolute magnitude, since metallicity correlates with absolute brightness), blue or red B-V color, small or large L(HAlpha) luminosity, and with or without FIR detection. Even with the typical completeness for snapshot observations of 70 \ about 4-5 galaxies, so statistically meaningful correlation studies can be done. Each target will be observed with both FUV (1500 Angstrom, DeltaLambda=220 Angstrom) and NUV (2500 Angstrom, DeltaLambda=1010 Angstrom) MAMAs --- although the Cycle 10 CP cautions that such observation could be considered as two different visits for snapshots, we have confirmed with the Science Proposal Selection Office (SPSO) and the STIS team at STScI that the STIS MAMA imaging of a single object with both FUV and NUV MAMAs can be allowed as one single visit, since this does not require a filter change, and the overhead for switching from FUV to NUV is minimal. For the FUV observation, the STIS FUV MAMA will be used with the F25QTZ filter, and for the NUV observation, the STIS NUV MAMA will be used with the same filter. The use of the longpass filter ensures that the background will not be dominated by geocoronal emissions such as LyAlpha, thus providing a low background suitable for our observations. Typical apparent magnitudes and B-V colors of the galaxies in our sample are B=18 and B-V=0.6. The color corresponds to that of local spiral galaxies. Assuming that their SEDs resemble those of spirals and that their typical sizes are about r_e=2.5 arcsec (Im et al. 1995; Casertano et al. 1995), the surface brightness within the half-light radius is about 22 B mag/arcsec^2. Note that the typical size of a KISS galaxy (r_e=2arcs5) is ideally suited for the field of view of STIS MAMA (25" * 25"), not too small nor too large. Also, the moderate brightness of KISS galaxies also provides an advantage for clearing the bright object limitation imposed on the STIS MAMA detector. Using the STIS exposure time calculator, we estimate a total S/N ratio of about 60-100 within the half light radius for an exposure time of about 420 seconds with the FUV MAMA, and 180 seconds with the NUV MAMA. For a galaxy with redder colors, we assume an elliptical galaxy SED, and find that the S/N ratio within the half-light radius is still S/N ~ 50-70 for the same exposure times. Note that this is sufficient for reliable estimate of apparent magnitudes (Neuschaefer et al. 1995), and is close to required S/N ~ 50 for reliable model fitting of galaxy profiles (Ratnatunga et al. 1998). The bright object limit of the STIS MAMA detectors is not an issue here, since the surface brightness of the objects are sufficiently low. A conservative estimate for the overhead time can be calculated from the STIS instrument handbook as well as the additional information provided by the STScI SPSO. For each target observation, an overhead of 7 minutes is needed for a guide star acquisition. The target acquisition overhead is not required for STIS MAMA imaging observation, but an initial instrument overhead of 5 minutes is needed. Also, an overhead of 3.5 minutes will be needed when switching from one instrument to another, and cosmic ray splitting for FUV observation requires overhead of 0.5 minute. Overall, our observations require a total time of about 26 minutes for each galaxy even with our conservative overhead assumptions and are thus ideally suited for snapshot observations. Note that the next most sensitive FUV instrument available is the WFPC2 with the F170W filter. But, the same kind of observation with the WFPC2 F170W filter requires as much as 20, 000 - 30, 000 seconds per object (or ~50 orbits per object). Therefore, the use of any instrument other than STIS for FUV or NUV observations of our sample is very costly in exposure time. Currently, the HST STIS MAMA is the only option available for obtaining FUV and NUV images of a statistically meaningful number of KISS galaxies. We expect that the FUV/NUV images of nearby emission line galaxies will be useful for various other programs, such as kinematic studies of UV morphology-selected local star forming galaxies. Also, the spectroscopic data from the KISS has been becoming available to the astronomical community through publications (e.g., Salzer et al. 2000). Thus, we believe our data would be valuable enough to the astronomical community, that we are willing to waive 6 months of proprietary period. Real Time Justification ----------------------- There are no special requirements for these snapshot observations. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Our objects are all extended and faint enough that the brightness limit of the STIS MAMA detectors is not an issue. The brightest object in our sample has V=15.64. Even adopting an extreme assumption that this object is a very compact galaxy with r_0 = 0.5 arcsec (thus, the central surface brightess would be V=16.14 mag/arcsec^2) and has a flat spectrum, the the brightest pixel count rate is < 0.1 counts/sec/pix and the global count rate is < 7000 counts/sec. Both values are sufficiently below the brightness limit of 200, 000 counts/sec (global) and 100 counts/sec/pixel (peak pixel). From finding charts, we also find that there is no very bright objects in the vicinity of 30" from the target.
