Abstract The gas and dust disk surrounding Beta Pictoris gives clues to the understanding of the late stages of planetary formation. However many aspects of its dynamics remain mysterious. With a pilot program in Cycle 5 (ID 5881), we demonstrated the feasibility of a new observational technique aimed at mapping the distribution of gas within the disk through the faint fluorescence emission lines with the spectrograph slit placed off the star. This previous program led to the detection of Fe II emission lines, providing original and new information on the dynamics, density and distribution of gas within the disk (Lecavelier et al. 2000). A tentative detection of SI is also to be confirmed. Here we propose new STIS observations of the two sides of the disk to confirm these detections and to substantially improve our knowledge of the gas properties. The echelle grating will be used to measure the faint emission lines formed by resonant scattering of the star light by Fe II, ZnII and CrII in the disk. The absorption of dust scattered light by SI and CI due to gas at larger distances will also be investigated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9154( 3) - 04/16/01 09:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ On each of the two sides of the disk (NE and SW) and at a distance of 0.5 arcsec from Beta Pic (10 AU from the star), a series of 5 exposures is to be obtained with the E140H, E230H and G230MB gratings. The observations will be made with E140H at the CI 1560 Angstrom and 1657 Angstrom lines (covering also the lines of SiII at 1527 Angstrom and CIV at 1548 Angstrom). Three different settings will be used with E230H at different central wavelengths (Lambda_c) to observe the SI (Lambda_c= 1763), ZnII and CrII (Lambda_c= 1963), and Fe II (Lambda_c= 2463). These selected settings will also give extra information on AlII, AlIII, MnII and FeI lines. Because the E230H at 2463 AA can be used only with the 0.1x0.003 slit to avoid the mama bright limit, a longer exposure time is needed and can be performed only on one side of the disk. The two sides will be explored with the G230MB and the 52x0.2 slit. A total of 13 (4+2+2+4+1) orbits is required for this program. The experience of cycle 5 showed that we will absolutely need to start each visit on the central star for guide star acquisition, peakup and observations of template spectra. The template spectra are the most important required calibrations. The knowledge of the HST PSF is not crucial because the emission lines will appear simply by the division with the template (Lecavelier et al. 2000). The well-known flux of Beta Pic and a careful choice of the gratings and the slits based on the experience of Cycle 7 (ID 7512) guarantee that the proposed observations do not exceed the MAMA count rate limit.
