Abstract We propose to characterize the physical properties of eight L-dwarfs in four binary systems. Our goal is to obtain astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic measurements of each component that will yield basic information on their atmospheric and dynamical properties. The high angular resolution of HST is essential because all these systems have angular separations <=0.5 arcsec. They do not have bright enough stars nearby that can be used for natural guide adaptive optics in ground-based telescopes. In Cycles 10 and 11 we propose to obtain WFPC2 and STIS data, allowing the determination of parallax, proper motion, position and spectral type for each component. In Cycle 12 we plan to obtain additional WFPC2 images for follow-up of the orbital motion and refinement of parallax and proper motion. We will also monitor possible intrinsic photometric variability in two filters (F606W and F814W). The STIS observations will provide spectral types, gravity sensitive indicators, and chromospheric activity (H_Alpha emission) for each component. These 4 systems will constitute benchmarks for determining dynamical masses of L dwarfs, and inferring the age-mass- spectral type relationship of this new spectral class. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9157( 15) - 08/05/04 11:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will center each binary on the PC camera because it provides the best spatial resolution. Observations with the filters F606W and F814W will allow us to check if there are any color-dependent variations in the astrometry or photometry. Using the optical magnitudes of the systems (see target list) and the spectral distribution at optical wavelengths (Martin et al. 1999) we have estimated the required exposure times using the WFPC2 exposure calculator for point sources. We estimate that the faintest component of our 4 L dwarf system have I~19, and R~22. For such object, we will obtain S/N=100 in the F810W filter in 180 s with the PC camera. For stars with a S/N of 20 we should get an astrometric precision of about 0.5/20 = 0.025 pixel in each image. This can be improved by root-N with more observations. This accuracy depends on having enough nearby stars to perform coordinate transformations. We looked at the Digital Sky Survey images of our fields and see somewhere between 5 and 15 objects in the entire 2x2 arcminutes covered by the WFPC2 array. This is a lower limit on how many sources there are in the field because we are interested in stars with R<23. In the F606W filter we estimate that there are usually more than 100 suitable reference stars for astrometry using a model of stellar counts in the Galaxy (Wainscoat et al. 1992, ApJS, 83, 111). We will use the DSS to avoid bright stars that would saturate the detector. This is not a problem in our fields. In general, the distortion corrections are currently good to about 0.05 pixels. We expect to improve the precision by doing the astrometry locally within a restricted region of the array. We will perform dithering by a few pixels. The following analysis will be carried out: 1) rejection of cosmic rays, 2) background subtraction, 3) check-up for PSF variations, 4) removing of systematic errors associated with the positioning of a point source with respect to pixel centers (Anderson & King 2000, PASP, 763, 1095). Including the overhead for Guide Star acquisition and instrumental overhead the WFPC2 observations of each target will require only about 35 minutes, i.e. less time than available in one visit. We request guide star acquisition and fine-lock guiding in order to ensure that our targets are well centered in the PC camera, and to avoid any drifts of the telescope. The scheduling of our WFPC2 observations should be optimized to solve for the 5 basic astrometric parameters (position, parallax and proper motion). The STIS observations should be scheduled soon after one of the WFPC2 observations so that we can predict the PA for placing both components on the slit. Using the STIS exposure calculator, we estimate that in an exposure time of 40 minutes, we can obtain S/N ratio ~15 at 700 nm for the faintest binary components with the grating G750L. The wavelength coverage (525--1030 nm) includes many spectral features that are sensitive to gravity, metallicity and temperature (CsI, NaI, KI, RbI, LiI resonance lines; TiI, VO, H2O, CrH, FeH bands). We plan for three visits in order to obtain a final S/N~25. The resultant low- resolution spectrum will be used for making a comparison with model atmospheres and inferring the basic parameters (gravity, metallicity, temperature) from the analysis of spectral features. We will also derive spectral types using the criteria given by Kirkpatrick et al. 1999 and Martin et al. 1999. Our experience with low-resolution optical spectroscopy of L dwarfs indicates that a S/N of 25 is enough for our purposes. The STIS observations should be scheduled soon after one of the WFPC2 observations so that we can accurately predict the PA for placing both components on the slit.
