Abstract Recent HST observations have provided the best resolved images of young circumstellar disks yet seen. In several cases, of which HH 30 is the best known example, nebulous young stars are resolved by HST into bipolar reflection nebulae several hundred AU in extent separated by a central dark absorption lane obscuring direct view of the star. Modeling suggests that these systems are edge-on optically thick circumstellar disks which occult the radiation from the star and near- stellar disk environment out to far-IR wavelengths. We propose a snapshot survey of nearby nebulous young stellar objects to study the detailed morphology of the their disks and envelopes and probe the effect of inclination on the infrared spectral energy distribution of disk/envelope systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9160( 6) - 04/26/01 14:02 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The size of our sample is determined by the need to have robust statistics for rare objects at high inclination. If the distribution of inclinations for Class I sources is random, then we might expect to only see 10 edge-on disks in our sample of 50. Since snapshot surveys typically only receive 70\ of their allotted targets, we might detect as few as 7 out of 35. Thus, 50 is a minimum number required to determine the frequency of edge-on disk sources with reasonable accuracy. Our sample includes young IRAS sources in star-forming clouds within 350 pc as well as a number of high-polarization objects in nearby clouds. The targets will be drawn from Kenyon & Hartmann (1995), Chen et al. (1996), and Saraceno et al. (1995), Aspin et al. (1994), Bally et al. (1996) which list JHK photometry for all sources. These sources are mainly located in the Taurus, Ophiuchus, Chamaeleon, and R CrA clouds at a distance of 150 pc, although we have a smattering of targets in Perseus (350 pc) and isolated clouds out to 600 pc. Approximate brightness estimates are available based on POSS-R, and we are currently in the process of obtaining higher precision I- band photometry. The I-J colors of edge-on sources observed to date by HST indicates that Class I sources in relatively low extinction regions such as Taurus will be brighter than 18th magnitude at F814W. A subset of targets was selected using the IRSA service at IPAC to locate extended sources in molecular clouds with photometric properties similar to known edge-on disk sources. Additional objects in our sample will be a list of high optical polarization young stellar objects provided by F. Menard. Many of these sources are located in regions where the large IRAS beam is confused by the presence of multiple infrared sources. The large polarization values measured for these sources indicates that they are likely to be nebulous when viewed by HST. Our exposure times can be estimated by analogy with Class I sources which have been observed previously by WFPC2 in F814W. These sources typically have integrated I magnitudes of ~ 17 - 18 with a size of a few arcsec^2$. According to the WFPC2 exposure time calculator (ETC), for a 25 arcsec^2 nebula with an integrated m_I = 17 on the WFC, a 1000 second exposure will give S/N ~ 10, which is adequate for determining morphology and inclination. Therefore, our snapshot survey will consist of a single CR-split 1000 second exposure at F814W on WF3 for each target. This strategy was used successfully to obtain F814W images of the Taurus Class I sources IRAS 04016+2610 (V = 20.5), IRAS 04248+2612 (V = 22), and IRAS 04302+2247 (V = 22.5) in GO program 6132 (S. Kenyon, PI). Since surface brightness is independent of distance, the same exposure times will also be sufficient for more distant sources. In some of our sources we expect that a bright PSF will be visible. In these cases we will need to subtract a reference PSF from the science image. Following John Krist's recommendation, we will observe these targets on PC1, where a much more extensive library of F814W reference PSFs is available than on WF3. Guidestar availability will be restricted for many sources, as our targets are associated with dark molecular clouds. It will often be necessary to proceed with observations using a single guidestar.
