Abstract Dark matter is the main constituent of the universe, yet we do not know how much there is, how it is distributed, or its composition. Galaxies contain dark matter that extends many tens of kiloparsecs from their centers, but we do not know the limits. The distribution of total mass in the universe can be determined by modelling the orbits galaxies have followed. Seven components of phase space per object are needed to solve the gravitational mechanics. One accessible component is distances which can be efficiently obtained with the TRGB method to an accuracy of better than 10%. Together with the other 6 known components; RA, DEC, cz, and the three components of peculiar velocity at t=0 (which were zero in a homogeneous early universe), one can solve for the masses, the mass distributions, and the orbits of about 120 galaxies at <5 Mpc. We compute orbits with the Numerical Action method developed by Peebles. TRGB distances for 28 galaxies will be determined in this program. In combination with other sources, a total of about 100 galaxies within 5 Mpc will have accurate distances. This HST data will constrain the mass distribution of galaxies plus total masses for the nearest 4 groups. A subset of these galaxies will be selected for proper motion studies with the Space Interferometry Mission. SIM will overconstrain the models with another 2 components of the velocity vector per galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9162( 5) - 04/03/01 13:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The sample was constrained from the outset to include only galaxies expected to lie within (m-M) ~ 28.5 mag, roughly the extreme limit of a satisfactory detection in one HST orbit. At this limit there would be s/n ~ 5 one magnitude fainter than the TRGB (M_I = -3 and M_V = -2) in both F606W and F814W filters in the exposure times possible in a standard orbit. The tip luminosity is defined in the I-band and the color provided by the (extended) V exposure isolates the RGB. The same standard observations will be made for all targets except for 5 cases identified in the section `duplications' below. Integrations will be cosmic-ray split and observations of equal duration will be made in F606W and F814W during a single orbit. In the case of the 5 targets identified in `duplications', the F814W exposures already exist and the entire orbit time will be spent observing with the F606W filter. Integrations will be cosmic-ray split. The WFPC2 field will be centered in the halo or outer disk region of each galaxy, in order to minimize crowding and contamination from, for example, AGB stars. Also, such placement of WFPC2 reduces the uncertainty arising from the internal extinction within the target galaxy.
